Polish Volunteers Are Risking Their Lives to Save Abandoned Pets in Ukraine

Animal advocates are driving into Ukraine to rescue stranded pets and sometimes their owners, often at great risk to their own safety.

WARSAW, Poland – After Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, medical student Hamza Chowdhry spent three sleepless nights in Kyiv before he decided to flee the city. The 30-year-old hopped in his car with packed bags, canisters full of extra fuel, and his cat, and drove west towards Poland. Along the way, he saw Ukrainian tanks speeding down highways, and heard multiple explosions that made the already clogged traffic worse as people panicked and tried to circumvent each other.

It took Chowdhry upwards of 14 hours to make it to Lutsk, a city in northwestern Ukraine, where he stayed for over a week at a family-run hotel while he tried to figure out how to get out of the country. It wasn’t until a convoy of volunteers tasked with saving Ukrainian animals showed up that Chowdhry was able to find his way into Poland.

“They were volunteers coming from Poland all the way to Ukraine to pick up animals,” Chowdhry said. “They were saving humans too.”

It’s a scene that’s been playing out regularly ever since the first animal rescue mission took place on Feb. 26, reported Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, as a mix of animal advocacy groups and grassroots volunteers work nonstop to collect hundreds of animals from Ukraine and bring them to safety. Janusz Żwański, a Polish postal worker who delivers antibiotics and helmets to Ukraine during his off days, sometimes collects Ukrainian cats on his way back to Poland.

What a douchebro.

EDIT to add:

‘A dangerous stunt’: Reward offered for information on driver who jumped Tesla in Echo Park

A failed stunt in Echo Park has the LAPD offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of a driver of a rented Tesla that went airborne before colliding with two parked cars.

Video of the Sunday morning crash was shared by the Los Angeles Police Department Central Division on YouTube.

The LAPD said a driver of a rented 2018 Tesla Model S, which was originally identified as a Tesla S-BLM, performed a dangerous stunt near the intersection of Baxter and Alvarado streets around 12:10 a.m. The video shows the Tesla headed toward an intersection at a high rate of speed when it suddenly catches air and then comes down hard on its front wheels.

The vehicle then crashed into several trash cans and two parked cars, the LAPD said.

Symbols of hatred have become far too common in American public life, whether it’s white hoods and swastikas on the right or Ukrainian flags and KN95 masks on the left.

We're going to pretend nothing happened? Charles Pugh to return to airwaves

Foolish, Shanie D, Reggie Reg, Coco, and Charles Pugh join forces to form the Grown Folk Radio network.

When disgraced former city council president and news anchor Charles Pugh was released from prison, it seemed to have happened rather quietly.

Pugh was released this past December after serving five years for having sex with a 14-year-old boy. Prior to his release, Pugh told the Detroit Free Press that he regretted what he did.

“What I did was wrong,” Pugh told the Free Press. “It is something that is indefensible. It was wrong and I shouldn’t have done it.”

While some would guess that Pugh would try to keep a low profile and fade to the background, quite the opposite is true.

Kanye West Barred From Performing at Grammys Due to 'Concerning Online Behavior,' Rep Confirms

Kanye West has been barred from performing at the Grammy Awards due to his “concerning online behavior,” a rep for the artist confirms to Variety. Reps for the Recording Academy and CBS, which present the Grammys, did not immediately respond to Variety‘s requests for comment on the claim early Saturday.

West’s rep cited a report in the Blast posted late Friday claiming that the artist’s team received a phone call Friday night informing him he had been “unfortunately” removed from the lineup of performers for the show due to his “concerning online behavior.” While West, who is up for five 2022 Grammy Awards, was not among the first list of performers announced on Tuesday, he may have been a planned performer. A rep for West sent Variety a link to that story, saying only “This is confirmed”; the rep did not respond to requests for further information, although the Blast report states, “Our sources say Kanye’s team isn’t surprised by the decision.”

Nor should they be. While Academy reps did not respond to requests for comment, there are many reasons why a Kanye West performance on live network television would be a prohibitively risky proposition. Based on his social media posts and activity in the past few months alone, he might use the stage to continue his online harassment of Pete Davidson, his estranged wife Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend; he could attempt to lobby public sentiment for custody of his children; he could make some statement in support of accused sex offender Marilyn Manson or unrepentant homophobe DaBaby, both of whom he has featured at his recent concerts or listening events; he could make more misguided statements about slavery or revive his stumping for former President Trump. Conversely, he could use the platform to do something that isn’t self-serving, self-referential or sheer trolling, like when he unexpectedly said “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people” during a televised Hurricane Katrina fundraiser in 2005.

Perhaps most of all, the report stated the decision was made partially because of concerns over possible interactions between West and Grammy host Trevor Noah; West used a slur against Noah in an Instagram post regarding comments the “Daily Show” host made regarding his split with Kardashian, resulting in a 24-hour ban from the platform. In response, Noah wrote, “I’ll be honest with you — what I see from the situation is a woman who wants to live her life without being harassed by an ex-boyfriend or an ex-husband or an ex-anything.”
