Sarah Bloom Raskin withdraws nomination to Fed board

Source: WaPo

Raskin’s path was all but doomed after Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee boycotted her confirmation vote and Sen. Joe Manchin said he opposed her.

Sarah Bloom Raskin, President Biden’s pick for the Fed’s top banking regulator, withdrew her nomination on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the process, after Republicans and one key Democrat opposed her confirmation.

Raskin’s nomination to the job of vice chair for supervision first came under pressure when GOP lawmakers came out against her, pointing to her focus on climate change and its threat to financial stability. But her candidacy was put in jeopardy after Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee boycotted her confirmation vote, raising questions about her time on the board of a Colorado payments firm that got access to a Fed payments systems during her tenure on the company’s board.

On Monday, Sen. Joe Manchin III, a key Democratic vote, said he opposed Raskin because of her stance on energy in an era of inflation.

The New Yorker first reported news of Raskin’s withdrawal. Raskin did not immediately return a request for comment.

Ralph Lauren unveils HBCU collection exclusively for Morehouse, Spelman College

Who Owns American Fashion? Ralph Lauren Undertakes a Mission to Highlight the Black Contribution

A capsule collection with two HBCUs drops later this month honoring their history and sartorial traditions with an all-Black everything campaign.

Polo Ralph Lauren’s newest tie-up with Morehouse College and Spelman College is working to bring a more inclusive answer to the question: who owns American style?

A capsule collection with the two HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) drops later this month honoring the history and sartorial traditions of both institutes with an all-Black everything campaign: Ralph Lauren tapped Black creative directors, photographer, cinematographer and models (comprised largely of Morehouse and Spelman students) for the project.

The line, an ode to 1920s to 1950s collegiate style, draws straight from the pages of the schools’ yearbooks and newsletters, archival images and mottos. And, perhaps even more importantly, it draws on the influence Black college students had in setting style trends.

“It was really important to steep this in history to show that this is not new,” James Jeter, Ralph Lauren director of concept design and special projects, Morehouse College alum (class of 2013) and brainchild behind the capsule, told WWD. “A lot of this project was really about changing ownership around how we think about clothing. So who owns three-piece suits? Who owns cable cardigans? Who owns the circle skirt, for instance? And while it’s typically and historically been relegated to Ivy League schools, if you see a lot of these archival images from [Morehouse and] Spelman, that has really helped to inform a lot of the way that we approached not only the design but the way that we approached the campaigns as well.”

U.S. Senate approves bill that would make Daylight Savings Time permanent in 2023

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, March 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate voted unanimously on Tuesday to make Daylight Savings Time permanent, a move supporters say would make winter afternoons brighter and end the twice changing of clocks.

The measure still needs approval from the U.S. House of Representatives and the backing of President Joe Biden. On Sunday, most of the United States resumed Daylight Savings Time, moving ahead one hour. The United States will resume standard time in November 2022.

Senator Marco Rubio said after input from airlines and broadcasters that supporters agreed that the change would not take place until November 2023.

Vandebilt Catholic High School investigating reported racist bullying incident

Vandebilt Catholic High officials said they are investigating a reported racist bullying incident that occurred in the Houma school's cafeteria.

A video of the incident surfaced Wednesday on social media showing a white male student throwing cotton at a Black male student who is seated in the cafeteria. The white student then whips the Black student with what appears to be a small belt.

Vandebilt officials said they are aware of the video and are “working to determine its origin.”

“School officials are working in cooperation with diocesan officials, students and parents to investigate this matter and are committed to ensuring that all individuals involved are held accountable in accordance with school policies,” the school said.

Ukraine reveals 'Russian warship, go fuck yourself!' postage stamp

Ukraine has chosen the image for a new postage stamp called “Russian warship, go fuck yourself!” as the besieged country continues to try to keep morale high and win the PR battle against invading Russian forces.

The country’s first deputy foreign minister, Emine Dzheppar, announced the stamp commemorating the Snake Island incident, in which 13 border guards stationed on a roughly 16-hectare (40-acre) rocky island about 186 miles (300km) west of Crimea reportedly replied, when asked to surrender: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.” They were then attacked, and thought killed.

The phrase has become a rallying cry for Ukraine’s defenders. Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, announced he would posthumously award all the soldiers the Hero of Ukraine award, though it was later reported that they may in fact still be alive.

The illustration by the artist Boris Groh received the most votes in a competition held by the Ukrainian postal service, Dzheppar said.

MSNBC Almost Brought Back Olbermann to Replace Maddow

To fill its upcoming Rachel Maddow void, MSNBC almost took a time machine back to the good old days of 2011.

Keith Olbermann, who shaped the network’s liberal voice before being canned more than a decade ago, was in lengthy discussions with NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell and news boss Cesar Conde to return to MSNBC and take over the key 9 p.m. time slot, the former Countdown host told Source Material.

But any dream of an Olbermann reunion was squashed when Maddow—who recently signed a massive $30 million deal to work less and transition out of her nightly broadcast—stepped in to personally veto him as her successor.

“I offered to have her production company ‘produce’ the show. Would give her some proxy control and a fuckton of money but she and [former MSNBC chief-turned-consultant to Maddow’s production company] Phil Griffin refused,” Olbermann told Source Material, claiming that the network also offered him a show in 2016.
