Attorney says Cohen can 'fill in the bulk' of Mueller report redactions

Source: The Hill

Lanny Davis, the attorney for Michael Cohen, said Thursday that Cohen "can fill in the bulk of the redactions" in special counsel Robert Mueller's report, which is set to be released on Thursday.

Davis added that Cohen, President Trump's former longtime lawyer, "has 7 days, 70 hours, + 100 pages of what" Mueller's team knows.

"As the #Country waits for the #MuellerReport, know this … it does not matter how #Barr #RedactedMuellerReport. @MichaelCohen212 has 7 days, 70 hours, + 100 pages of what #TeamMueller knows and can fill in the bulk of the redactions. Nice try Mr. @POTUS. #Truth We will tell it all," Davis wrote in a tweet.

GOP lawmaker withdraws invite for AOC to visit Kentucky mine

Source: NBC News

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is firing back at her Republican colleagues after one of them rescinded an invitation to visit a coal mine in Kentucky.

“GOP’s getting scared that up close, their constituents will realize I’m fighting harder for their healthcare than their own Reps,” she goaded them on Twitter.

Ocasio-Cortez's taunt comes after GOP Rep. James Comer offered an alternative reason why his fellow Kentucky Republican, Rep. Andy Barr, might want to rescind his coal mine invite — and it isn't because of Barr's stated rationale that she had gotten into a Twitter spat with another GOP member.

Lawmakers in his party are "making a mistake picking on" the New York freshman over issues such as nonrenewable energy because of her smarts, policy preparation and massive millennial following, Comer said Monday on the Lexington NBC affiliate's sports and news program “Hey Kentucky!”

Trump blasts Pelosi for defending 'out of control' Omar

Source: The Hill

President Trump on Monday chastised Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for defending Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), saying the Minnesota Democrat is "out of control."

“Before Nancy, who has lost all control of Congress and is getting nothing done, decides to defend her leader, Rep. Omar, she should look at the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements Omar has made,” Trump tweeted.

“She is out of control, except for her control of Nancy!” he added.

Trump's remarks come amid growing concerns for Omar's personal safety. He has ratcheted up his criticisms of the freshman lawmaker in recent days, even as Democrats warn that the president's rhetoric could endanger Omar, who is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court declined to take up the case of a death row inmate, Charles Rhines.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court declined to take up the case of a death row inmate, Charles Rhines. He sought to challenge his sentence based on evidence of anti-gay bias in juror statements. https://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/041519zor_h3dj.pdf

Late yesterday, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review Charles Rhines’ case because there is compelling evidence that at least some of the jurors sentenced him to death in part because he is gay. The brief argues that sexual orientation discrimination must be removed from the administration of justice, and that jury sentences infected by anti-gay bias – like the death sentence handed down in Mr. Rhines’ case – must not stand.

“No person should be put to death because of who they are,” said Daniel Harawa, Assistant Counsel at LDF. “Jury verdicts infected by anti-gay bias, like those tainted by racial bias, undermine the Constitution’s promise of equal protection and an impartial jury. This is especially true in the capital context given the Eighth Amendment’s protection against the arbitrary or discriminatory imposition of the death penalty.”

LDF was lead counsel in Buck v. Davis, where the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated Duane Buck’s death sentence because of the influence of racial bias. In an opinion authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court reaffirmed the longstanding principle that “[o]ur law punishes people for what they do, not who they are.”

LDF’s brief argues that this principle articulated by the Court in Buck should apply here. In Mr. Rhines’ case, one of the jurors signed an affidavit in which he invoked a disturbing anti-gay stereotype, stating that, “that if [Mr. Rhines] is gay, we’d be sending him where he wants to go if we voted for [life imprisonment].” Another juror added that during deliberations there was, “lots of discussion of homosexuality” and there “was a lot of disgust.” These remarks show that contrary to the principle underscored in Buck, some jurors sentenced Mr. Rhines to death not because of what he did, but because of who he is.

6 appear in court on charges they sent mosque attack images

Source: AP

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Six people appeared in a New Zealand court Monday on charges they illegally redistributed the video a gunman livestreamed as he shot worshippers at two mosques last month.

Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen O’Driscoll denied bail to businessman Philip Arps and an 18-year-old suspect who both were taken into custody in March. The four others are not in custody.

The charge of supplying or distributing objectionable material carries a penalty of up to 14 years imprisonment. Arps, 44, is scheduled to next appear in court via video link on April 26.

The 18-year-old suspect is charged with sharing the livestream video and a still image of the Al Noor mosque with the words “target acquired.” He will reappear in court on July 31 when electronically monitored bail will be considered.

Pelosi contacts Capitol Hill security to ensure Omar's safety after Trump tweet Article title

Source: The Hill

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that she spoke with the Sergeant at Arms of the House to ensure the safety of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) after President Trump recently tweeted a video targeting the congresswoman.

“Following the president’s tweet, I spoke with the Sergeant-at-Arms to ensure that Capitol Police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard Congresswoman Omar, her family and her staff. They will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces," Pelosi said in a statement.

Pelosi also called on Trump to take down the video, which she called "disrespectful and dangerous."

“The President’s words weigh a ton, and his hateful and inflammatory rhetoric creates real danger. President Trump must take down his disrespectful and dangerous video," Pelosi said.
