Trump plans to cut daily coronavirus briefings

Source: Axios

President Trump plans to pare back his coronavirus press conferences, according to four sources familiar with the internal deliberations. He may stop appearing daily and make shorter appearances when he does, the sources said — a practice that may have started with Friday's unusually short briefing.

Why this matters: Trump's daily press conferences — televised to a largely homebound population — have dominated the public discourse about the coronavirus.

Behind the scenes: A number of Trump's most trusted advisers — both inside and outside the White House — have urged him to stop doing marathon televised briefings.

They've told him he's overexposed and these appearances are part of the reason polls aren't looking good for him right now against Joe Biden.

White House staff just came into the briefing room and informed the print pooler that they want them to swap seats w CNN. That would move CNN to the back row from the front. @whca made these seat assignments not staff

Pooler @chrisjohnson82 said he would not move unless he heard from the @whca. WH staffer threatened to have Secret Service enforce the swap. WHCA board members ran back into the press office to discuss

I am not going to participate in a briefing if the White House moves reporters from their assigned seats.

Here's what was reopened in Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's revised stay-at-home order

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a revised stay-at-home order Friday, reopening several businesses in the process.

Here’s a look at the businesses that are now allowed to open:

Landscapers
Lawn care companies
Plant nurseries
Bike repair shops
Stores selling nonessential supplies (curbside pickup and delivery)
Garden centers and paint/flooring/carpet areas at big-box retailers

These companies are allowed to reopen as long as they follow social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), officials said.

Whitmer has also lifted restrictions on outdoor activities such as golf and motorized boating. Golfers will not be allowed to ride in carts.

Michigan residents with multiple in-state homes can now travel between their homes, though it’s strongly discouraged, Whitmer said.

...

People are now required, rather than encouraged, to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces such as grocery stores if they can medically tolerate it. Employers must provide non-medical grade masks to their in-person employees.

FDA cautions against hydroxychloroquine outside of hospital setting

Source: NBC

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday cautioned physicians against prescribing hydroxychloroquine to COVID-19 patients outside of hospital settings or clinical trials. The drug, an antimalarial, was repeatedly touted by President Donald Trump.

"The FDA is aware of reports of serious heart rhythm problems in patients with COVID-19 treated with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, often in combination with azithromycin," the FDA wrote on its website.

"We are also aware of increased use of these medicines through outpatient prescriptions. Therefore, we would like to remind health care professionals and patients of the known risks associated with both hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine," the FDA said.

The FDA also said hydroxychloroquine can still be used in hospital settings or in clinical trials, but it was not immediately clear whether some planned trials would be stopped.
