New HHS spokesman made racist comments about Chinese people in now-deleted tweets

Source: CNN

(CNN)The new spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services in a series of now-deleted tweets made racist and derogatory comments about Chinese people, said Democrats wanted the coronavirus to kill millions of people and accused the media of intentionally creating panic around the pandemic to hurt President Donald Trump.

Michael Caputo, a longtime New York Republican political operative who worked on Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, was appointed last week as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at HHS, a prominent communications role at the department which serves a central role in the federal government's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Caputo, a prolific user who often tweeted insults and profanity, recently erased nearly his entire Twitter history from before April 12. CNN's KFile used the Internet Archive's Way Back Machine to review more than 1300 deleted tweets and retweets from late February to early April many of which were regarding the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

While he occasionally weighed in with praise for public officials or more straightforward observations, tweets from this period are also littered with conspiracy theories and controversial language to go after perceived critics of the Trump administration.

'The Marie Antoinette of the Senate': GOP Rep. King slams McConnell for suggesting states...

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell drew scathing criticism from a Republican lawmaker Wednesday for saying he would prefer to see states file for bankruptcy than receive additional federal funds as they struggle to cover the costs of combatting the coronavirus outbreak.

Republican Rep. Peter King of New York blasted McConnell's for his comment in a tweet Wednesday night. He equated the senator from Kentucky's statement to the last queen of France's infamous (and apocryphal) "let them eat cake" response to the plight of starving peasants.

"McConnell's dismissive remark that States devastated by Coronavirus should go bankrupt rather than get the federal assistance they need and deserve is shameful and indefensible," King said. "To say that it is 'free money' to provide funds for cops, firefighters and healthcare workers makes McConnell the Marie Antoinette of the Senate."

He is on Katy Tur right now.

Michigan Republicans launch attack on Gov. Whitmer's emergency powers

Republican leaders are calling legislators back to the Michigan Capitol on Friday to assert their role in responding to the coronavirus pandemic with additional oversight and an attempt to limit Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency authority.

The House and Senate will meet to form a “special oversight committee” on the state’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield, R-Levering, announced Thursday on Twitter.

Senate Republicans also plan to vote for the repeal of a 1945 law that Whitmer contends gives her authority to continue emergency actions beyond May 1 without legislative approval, a symbolic act given the governor’s ability to veto the measure.

“Michigan needs to handle this pandemic seriously yet properly. It’s what the people deserve, and we will see that it happens,” Chatfield wrote on Twitter.

So it's probably time for Joe Biden to echo his old boss: There's not a Blue State America and a Red State America. There's the United States of America.

Kentucky lawyer arrested for allegedly threatening governor over lockdown

Source: NBC News

A Kentucky lawyer was arrested for alleged online threats against the state’s governor, who has come under fire over his coronavirus lockdown.

James Gregory Troutman, 53, was charged with terroristic threatening, a misdemeanor, by the Kentucky State Police for his comments about Gov. Andy Beshear, according to NBC affiliate WAVE in Louisville.

On Facebook, Troutman said, “Maybe some should ask Beshear in a press conference on his thoughts on William Goebel,” referring to a former Kentucky governor who was shot a day before he was sworn into office and died a few days later. “For those who don’t know history, it’s a good read,” Troutman, of Louisville, wrote, according to court documents cited by WAVE.

In another thread discussing a rally protesting the state lockdown, Troutman replied to a comment on Facebook about the governor's possible attendance, saying “with any luck” Beshear would be shot at the rally.

Google says all advertisers must prove identities moving forward

Source: Axios

Google has changed its advertising policies to require all advertisers, not just those with political affiliations, to complete an identity verification program to show ads on its platforms, which include Google Search, Google News, YouTube and more.

Why it matters: Verification tends to weed out spammy advertisers, including those that sell things like price-gauged hand sanitizer or fake coronavirus face masks.

How it works: Advertisers will need to submit personal identification, business incorporation documents or other information that proves who or what they are and the country they operate in.

Users will moving forward be able to see the advertiser's name and country of origin in the "Why this ad?" menu on the page the ad is served.
