Keith Ellison: I'm boycotting the NFL over 'cowardly' kneeling ban

Source: The Hill

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said that he will boycott the NFL this upcoming season over its new policy requiring players to stand during the national anthem.

“Friends who know me, know that I love football. But I won’t be watching this NFL season because of the unfair cowardly and idiotic kneeling ban,” the progressive lawmaker tweeted on Sunday, adding the hashtag “Boycott NFL.”

The NFL approved the new policy last week, requiring that players on the field stand during the anthem. Players will also be allowed to stay in the locker room during the anthem, but any players who protest during the “Star Spangled Banner” will face a penalty.

President Trump began attacking NFL players who kneel during the anthem last year, saying that NFL owners should fire the protesting players.

Donald Pump (I apologize in advance):

https://twitter.com/ajhisnandez/status/999728038295343104
Donald Trump Jr. is participating in a classic rite of passage for the newly single: posting thirst traps.

Since Vanessa Trump filed for divorce last month, he's made it painfully aware that he's on the market. Single and ready to mingle. All alone and ready to bone. He's one step away from being That Fish Guy and joining Tinder with photos from his last fishing trip.

Trump Jr. posted a gym selfie on his Instagram story on Thursday, captioning it "Donald Pump!" and topping it off with a series of emoji. The extremely flattering angle of the selfie makes him appear to have no chin at all as he smiles/grimaces for the camera. The single fluorescent light creates a halo effect, highlighting the pure smolder in his eyes as he attempts to flirt with all 1.1 million of his Instagram followers.

'Throw the bums out' of Congress to protect Russia probe, top Democrat says

Source: WaPo

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Sunday called on voters to “throw the bums out” of Congress whom he has accused of trying to help President Trump undermine the special counsel’s Russia probe.

“The only thing that makes this possible is a Congress that is complicit,” Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) said on ABC News’s “This Week,” naming several conservative leaders in the Republican Party and accusing “a weak” Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) of refusing to “stand up for the independence of the Justice Department.”

“As long as there’s a majority in Congress that is willing to do this president’s will and as long as we have a deeply unethical president, there’s only one remedy,” Schiff said.

Schiff’s words come at the end of a week that pitted the White House against the Justice Department and left Republicans divided over concerns about the role that retired American professor and FBI source Stefan A. Halper played in the Russia investigation. They are also a clear sign that as Trump takes to Twitter to peddle his misleading “spy” claims, top Democrats are eyeing the 2018 midterm elections as crucial not just for taking back the House of Representatives, but also for defending the federal law enforcement agencies from what Schiff called a “pattern” of attacks.

White House comms team turns on each other in front of Trump

Source: Axios

Shortly after word leaked that Kelly Sadler had taken a nasty shot at John McCain, President Trump convened a meeting in the Oval Office for a tiny group of communications staffers, according to sources familiar with the gathering. Sadler, Mercedes Schlapp, Raj Shah, and John Kelly all gathered in front of the Resolute Desk for a conversation with Trump about the leaking problem. They were the only people in the room, though the door to the outer Oval was open.

What happened: The president told Sadler she wouldn’t be fired for her remark. He added, separately in the conversation, that he’s no fan of McCain. Then Trump, who had grown obsessed with the leaking problem, told Sadler he wanted to know who the leakers were. Sadler then stunned the room: To be completely honest, she said, she thought one of the worst leakers was Schlapp, her boss.

Schlapp pushed back aggressively and defended herself in the room. And in follow up conversations after the meeting, some of Schlapp’s colleagues also came to her defense. (In a prior meeting, she had said, "You can put this on the record: I stand with Kelly Sadler" ). Sadler went on to name other people she also suspected of being leakers.

The allegation — like a previous internal meeting to deal with leaking — ultimately got leaked to us.

The World's Tiniest City Park Just Got a Little More Official

Source: Atlas Obscura

...

According to Matt Ross of Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland is home to over 200 parks and natural areas. “The city was planned for having parks,” he says, but Mill Ends was more of an accident. In 1946, Dick Fagan, a writer with the Oregon Journal, surveyed the view from his second-story office window and noticed, on the median of the street below, a hole about two feet wide where a light post was supposed to be. The light pole never came. According to the Parks & Recreation website, when weeds started popping up instead, “Fagan decided to take matters into his own hands and to plant flowers.”

Fagan had a newpaper column named “Mill Ends,” a term for leftover wood scraps. He started covering the goings-on at the tiny verge, calling it Mill Ends Park. In his writing, he claimed leprechauns lived there. In real life, he hosted snail races, planted and tended a single tree, and “made it well known,” as one local fan put it.

After Fagan died in 1969, others kept the park’s spirit alive. On St. Patrick’s Day, 1976, it was added to the official roster of city parks. “It’s managed by the Parks bureau,” says Ross. “It has a regular maintenance schedule, with weeding and watering. Horticulturists attend to it.” (To mark this particular occasion, they planted some bright pink miniature roses.)

It still gets plenty of what Ross calls “community-assisted enhancements:” People have set up tiny swimming pools and sheep farms, and, in 2011, there was a bite-sized Occupy Wall Street protest. This past 4/20, someone planted some cannabis plants, which the city quickly yanked.

A songbird and sunshine: Meghan Markle's coat of arms unveiled

Source: CNN

London (CNN)The Duchess of Sussex has been bestowed with a coat of arms, days after her royal wedding to Prince Harry, Kensington Palace announced Friday.

Emblazoned with personal touches like the golden poppies from her home state, California, and wintersweet, which grows at her new residence, Kensington Palace, the coat of arms was designed by the College of Arms and approved by Britain's Queen Elizabeth.

The blue background of the shield itself represents the Pacific Ocean off the Californian coast, while the two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the Golden State.

The figures on either side of the shield, known as supporters, are a songbird and a golden lion wearing a crown.

"It is customary for Supporters of the shield to be assigned to Members of the Royal Family, and for wives of Members of the Royal Family to have one of their husband's Supporters and one relating to themselves," Kensington Palace said in a statement. "The Supporter relating to The Duchess of Sussex is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication."
