MacKenzie Bezos pledges half her fortune to charity after Amazon divorce

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - MacKenzie Bezos, the former wife of Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, pledged on Tuesday to give away half her fortune to charity, following a movement founded by billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates.

Bezos, whose former husband is the world’s richest man, was one of 19 people on Tuesday to sign the “Giving Pledge,” a campaign announced in 2010 by Berkshire Hathaway Inc’s Buffett and Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates. It calls for the super-rich to give away more than half their fortunes during their lifetimes or in their wills.

“In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share,” MacKenzie Bezos said in a statement. “My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care.”

The fortune of Jeff Bezos was estimated by Forbes magazine to be $131 billion this year. Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos divorced earlier this year.

George Conway defends Klobuchar from Meghan McCain criticism

Lawyer George Conway on Tuesday defended Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) after Meghan McCain told the 2020 Democratic hopeful to leave her father "out of presidential politics."

"Sen. Klobuchar was perfectly respectful, and the anecdote she told redounded to the late Senator’s credit. His legacy belongs to the nation he devoted his life to serving," Conway, whose wife, Kellyanne Conway, serves as White House counselor, tweeted.

A cleaning company with a lofty goal: transforming a low-wage industry

At her former cleaning job, Kimberly Reyes was paid a set amount, in cash, even if the house was a disaster. Sometimes there wasn’t enough work, so she got a second job working nights and weekends at a restaurant. Because she was a contractor, she had to save up to pay taxes on her income but didn’t always set aside enough.

But in December, Reyes, who lives in Maryland, started working for Well-Paid Maids in Washington D.C., which is launching operations in Boston Monday. Now she is a full-time employee making $17 an hour, with three weeks of paid vacation time and access to health insurance. For Reyes, who is studying to become a medical administrative assistant, the job is a revelation.

“I’ve never had a job that has benefits,” said Reyes, 26, the mother of a 15-month-old girl. Now that her hours are steady and her wages are higher, “I don’t have to stress about bills as much.”

Cleaning houses is not usually considered a desirable job. Most cleaners are contractors, with few job protections and no benefits. Well-Paid Maids is looking to change that with a business that founder Aaron Seyedian describes as “a living-wage home-cleaning” service.

His ultimate goal goes beyond just being a good employer, though. Seyedian envisions his company as a case study for the living-wage movement, one that demonstrates that traditionally low-paying industries can treat workers well and still be profitable. Once lawmakers see his real-life example, he hopes his modest cleaning operation can spark greater worker protections across the economy.

My three older brothers all joined the military. We were lucky to get them back home. #MemorialDay is a reminder not only of the sacrifices our service members make, but of the responsibility we have to honor our promises to our service members, our veterans, and their families.

A private group says it's started building its own border wall using millions donated in GoFundMe

Source: CNN

Sunland Park, New Mexico (CNN)A group that raised millions of dollars in a GoFundMe campaign says it has broken ground on a project to build its own stretch of border wall on private property.

We Build the Wall, a group founded by a triple amputee Air Force veteran, said in a series of social media posts on Monday that it had started construction on private property in New Mexico. The announcement comes months after the group began its GoFundMe campaign to raise private donations for a border wall, and days after a federal judge blocked President Donald Trump from tapping into billions in Defense Department funds for his administration's wall construction efforts.

"Buckle up, we're just getting started!" the group wrote in a Facebook post, sharing what it said were images of construction over the weekend.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who chairs We Build the Wall's advisory board, told CNN on Monday that the group has built a mile of border wall in the El Paso, Texas, area -- something he says connects two 21-mile sections of existing fencing.

We asked the dads running for president what they do for child care

Child care is often framed as women’s responsibility. We asked men instead.

Beto O’Rourke came in for widespread criticism in March when he said that his wife Amy was raising their three children, “sometimes with my help,” while he ran for president.

He later apologized, but the comment exposed a deeper reality: While male candidates can often count on a partner to take the lead on child care while they campaign, women rarely can do the same.

That may be part of the reason fewer women run for office than men, or why they may wait until their children are grown before running. Of the more than 20 Democratic candidates running for president in 2020, Vox counted nine men with children below high school age, and just one woman, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

When mothers do seek high-profile jobs, whether in government or in the private sector, they’re often asked how they balance work and family. As NBC 10 reporter Alison King put it in an April interview with presidential candidate Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), “If you were a woman, the first question I would be asking you is, how are you going to juggle having an infant at home and a presidential campaign?”

But asking only women that question perpetuates the idea that child care is women’s responsibility, something for them to figure out without the men in their lives. So Vox decided instead to ask all the male 2020 Democratic candidates with young children at home to describe their child care arrangements — who was caring for their kids, we asked, when they were off campaigning?
