Trump administration cuts dozens of staff at financial markets watchdog: source

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration moved on Wednesday to drastically shrink a government agency tasked with identifying looming financial risks, notifying around 40 staff members they would be laid off, according to a person familiar with the changes.

The employees at the Office of Financial Research (OFR) were told on Wednesday they will lose their jobs as part of a broader reorganization of the agency previously announced by the Trump administration which has pledged to slash financial regulation.

The Office of Financial Research (OFR) is an independent bureau within the United States Department of the Treasury that was established by the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, whose passage in 2010 was a legislative response to the financial crisis of 2007–08 and the subsequent Great Recession.[3] Established as a department within the Treasury, the Office is tasked with providing administrative, technical, budget analysis and other support services to the Council and its affiliated agencies.[4]

Sen. Rand Paul says he delivered Trump letter to Putin

Source: WKYT

MOSCOW (WKYT) - Sen. Rand Paul, R - Ky., says he has delivered a letter on behalf of President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Paul announced the delivery Wednesday afternoon while meeting with various Russian leaders throughout the week.

“I was honored to deliver a letter from President Donald J. Trump to President Vladimir Putin’s administration,” Paul said, “The letter emphasized the importance of further engagement in various areas including countering terrorism, enhancing legislative dialogue and resuming cultural exchanges.”

The Kentucky Republican says Russian and American lawmakers need to work closer than before, saying the lack of dialogue is the biggest problem between the two countries.

Abdul El-Sayed vows to take momentum from supporters into Whitmer's race in November

An emotional crowd of at least 1,000 supporters cheered for Abdul El-Sayed as the candidate expressed gratitude that they helped to create a movement from their belief in his Progressive platform that, he said, "reflected what America is supposed to be."

"I like to think that even though I'm not going to get the opportunity to serve, now we've ignited a belief of what's possible in young people ," El-Sayed said at Cobo Center in Detroit on Tuesday.

The candidate for the Democratic nomination for Michigan's governor spoke about two hours after the polls closed in the August 7 primary, generating cheers as he entered the room and some tears as supporters recognized the end of a hard-fought campaign that many hoped would be a closer contest.

But El-Sayed held onto the hopes of his supporters who, he said, responded to how he spoke about "working toward a more just, more equitable, a more sustainable Michigan."

They responded with enthusiasm as he told them: "That work does not end today."

Instead, the progressive candidate once called "the new Obama" urged them to retain their sense of becoming a progressive movement - and to unite behind Whitmer and deliver the Nov. 6 general election for her over the Republican nominee, Attorney General Bill Schuette.

"We have an opportunity," he said. "Do not walk out of here saying anything like, 'Abdul or bust.' Tomorrow, we turn around and we turn this into a movement to ... beat Bill Schuette in the fall."

Class act. I have a really positive feeling about our chances to flip it blue! #TeamWhitmer!

Why Does Betsy DeVos's Family Yacht Fly a Foreign Flag? Donald Trump's 'America First' Administratio

When someone untied a yacht owned by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’s family, the episode was portrayed as an example of anti-Trump harassment. But the yacht’s foreign flag illustrated how an allegedly “America First” administration is full of moguls who have stashed their wealth offshore in ways that helps them avoid taxes, regulations, transparency requirements and domestic employment laws.

We already know that Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao’s family shipping consortium routes its business through the Marshall Islands—a notoriously secretive tax haven. Federal records detail how Trump’s Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, SEC Chairman Jay Clayton and Federal Reserve board appointee Randal Quarles held parts of their personal fortunes in investments based in the Cayman Islands, which are not necessarily required to adhere to America’s domestic financial regulations.

Now there’s DeVos, one of the heirs of Amway’s multi-level marketing empire. When the family’s 164-foot yacht was untethered from a Huron, Ohio, dock, it was flying a flag of the Cayman Islands, where the yacht is registered, according to VesselTracker. According to federal records, the yacht is owned by RDV International Marine, which is an affiliate of the company that controls the DeVos family’s fortune.

Like those of other Trump officials, DeVos’s investment portfolio includes Cayman holdings. But as a physical vessel, the yacht is something separate and more tangible, raising a question: why would an American billionaire’s floating palace moored at a northern Ohio dock be registered in an exotic Caribbean archipelago?

The Shadow Rulers of the VA

How Marvel Entertainment chairman Ike Perlmutter and two other Mar-a-Lago cronies are secretly shaping the Trump administration’s veterans policies.

Last February, shortly after Peter O’Rourke became chief of staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs, he received an email from Bruce Moskowitz with his input on a new mental health initiative for the VA. “Received,” O’Rourke replied. “I will begin a project plan and develop a timeline for action.”

O’Rourke treated the email as an order, but Moskowitz is not his boss. In fact, he is not even a government official. Moskowitz is a Palm Beach doctor who helps wealthy people obtain high-service “concierge” medical care.

More to the point, he is one-third of an informal council that is exerting sweeping influence on the VA from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida. The troika is led by Ike Perlmutter, the reclusive chairman of Marvel Entertainment, who is a longtime acquaintance of President Trump’s. The third member is a lawyer named Marc Sherman. None of them has ever served in the U.S. military or government.

Yet from a thousand miles away, they have leaned on VA officials and steered policies affecting millions of Americans. They have remained hidden except to a few VA insiders, who have come to call them “the Mar-a-Lago Crowd.”

'Plastered Peggy' Lists Reasons Why Cop Shouldn't Arrest Her, Claims She's a 'Very Clean, Thoroughbr

Needless to say, she failed sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test showed that her blood alcohol level checked in at a solid .18 percent (the legal limit in South Carolina is 0.08 percent).

None of that fazed her though, Sauced Susan continued to list reasons why cops shouldn’t arrest her citing great points of moral character, including the fact that she’s had perfect grades her entire life, she was a cheerleader, she was a sorority girl, she graduated from a “high accredited university,” she was in the National Honors Society, and the fact that her partner is apparently a cop.

“I’m a white, clean girl,” she insisted.

But yeah, this time at least, Drunk Debbie’s whiteness didn’t work for her and she was booked in Beaufort County Detention Center and faces charges for driving under the influence, disregarding a stop sign, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia charge

A 71-Year-Old Sikh Man Was Beaten And Spit On During His Morning Walk

A 71-year-old Sikh man was attacked by two masked men while on his early morning walk in Manteca, California, on Monday in what authorities say could be a hate crime.

The attack on the man identified as Sahib Singh was captured on a nearby home's security camera shortly after 6 a.m.

In the video, two masked men approach Singh and after a brief interaction, Singh tries to walk around the two men by going into the street. The masked men follow him and after another brief interaction, one of the assailants suddenly kicks Singh, causing him to fall back to the ground with his turban falling off.

After getting up, Singh tries to defend himself and is kicked again, falling to the ground a second time. The 71-year-old remains on the ground as the two men walk away, but then suddenly, one of the men returns and kicks Singh three times and appears to spit on Singh before leaving.

The Manteca Police Department did not immediately reply to a request for comment from BuzzFeed News, but the Manteca Bulletin reported that authorities were looking into the incident as a robbery attempt, but "are not ruling out the possibility of it being a hate crime."
