The Newseum is selling MAGA hats and 'fake news' T-shirts

If you’re looking to stock up on the famous red hats that bear Donald Trump’s favorite slogan, look no further than the Newseum’s gift shop.

On its website, the interactive news museum in Washington, D.C., sells $14.99 “Make America Great Again” hats alongside American flag accessories and ties that bear the preamble to the Constitution. A T-shirt that says “You are very fake news” sells for $24.99, but it’s on sale for $19.97.

The seven-level interactive museum is located in the heart of the nation's capital. According to its website, the non-profit museum’s mission is “to increase public understanding of the importance of a free press and the First Amendment.”

In an email to Poynter, Sonya Gavankar, director of public relations for the Newseum, said the merch is an example of how the museum tries to foster an environment that encourages free speech.

Senate Democrats to end boycott, plan to meet with Kavanaugh later this month

Source: WaPo

Senate Democrats will begin meeting with Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh to press him privately on releasing his papers, a senior Democratic aide said Friday, after Democrats had boycotted these sit-downs for weeks amid a document dispute with Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, had held off scheduling the traditional one-on-one sessions as they tussled with Republicans over releasing documents from Kavanaugh’s voluminous paper trail, primarily from his time in the George W. Bush White House.

But Schumer and Feinstein will start meeting with President Trump’s pick to succeed retired Justice Anthony M. Kennedy after the Senate returns from its truncated recess on Aug. 15, a senior Senate Democratic aide said. They will press Kavanaugh on releasing his papers from his tenure as Bush’s staff secretary — which Republicans argue are irrelevant in assessing his fitness to be a justice — and “question him about their contents.”

“In addition to questioning Judge Kavanaugh on health care, women’s freedom, presidential power and other issues, Senate Democrats intend to demand that he call for and support the release of all of his files from his time in the Bush White House,” the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity to freely describe party strategy. “Democrats will urge Judge Kavanaugh to ask the National Archives and President Bush to adhere to the same standard that was met for Justice [Elena] Kagan’s confirmation.”

CNN asks Trump supporters outside rally to explain 'QAnon' theory

CNN asked supporters of President Trump to explain “QAnon,” a right-wing conspiracy theory, in tense interviews outside of his Pennsylvania rally on Thursday night.

CNN’s Gary Tuchman asked Trump supporters, some of whom were wearing or displaying Q gear at the rally, about the wide-ranging and vague conspiracy theories spread under the name “QAnon.”

Trump supporter Timothy Rasmussen told CNN that said “Q” represents a “movement.”

“It’s a shift. I can feel it coming, some call it the great awakening,” Rasmussen said.

Trump staffs up Mideast team for peace plan rollout

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the Trump administration is staffing up a Middle East policy team at the White House in anticipation of unveiling its long awaited but largely mysterious Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

The National Security Council last week began approaching other agencies seeking volunteers to join the team, which will work for President Donald Trump’s Mideast peace pointmen Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, according to the officials. The team, which is being set up to organize the peace plan’s public presentation and any negotiations that may ensue, will comprise three units: one concentrating on its political and security details, one on its significant economic focus and one on strategic communications, the officials said.

The creation of a White House team is the first evidence in months that a plan is advancing. Although Trump officials have long promised the most comprehensive package ever put forward toward resolving the conflict, the emerging plan has not been described with even a small amount of detail by Kushner, Greenblatt or any other official.

Timing on the release of the plan remains undecided. The State Department, Pentagon, intelligence agencies and Congress have been asked to detail personnel to the team for six months to a year, according to the officials, who were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Right-Wing Groups With Guns Plan to Impersonate and Infiltrate Antifa

Months of escalating clashes by far-right groups in Portland, Oregon could turn even uglier at a Saturday rally where the right has threatened to carry guns and infiltrate anti-fascist groups.

Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys are far-right organizations that have attracted violent racists. The two groups have spearheaded a series of west coast rallies, including a June 30 rally in Portland that descended into violent clashes with anti-fascist protesters. Now they are scheduled to rally on Saturday in Portland, where their leaders have encouraged the carrying of guns and their followers have fantasized about beating up counter-protesters.

Joey Gibson, Patriot Prayer’s leader and a longshot U.S. Senate candidate, variously defends his rallies as a free speech project, an anti-liberal campaign, and a crusade to expose the anti-fascists who counter-message the rallies. In Portland, his group’s stated beef is with anti-ICE activists and the city’s mayor, who initially took a hands-off approach to anti-ICE protests.

“The goal is to get the country so outraged they put pressure on the mayor to actually respect the Constitution,” Gibson said of the upcoming rally during a Tuesday appearance on InfoWars. “Basically that’s what we do. We put so much pressure on the local politicians to the point where they break.”

“We’re gonna have several people who are gonna be dressed up in black bloc [clothing] and they’re gonna be all amongst their crowd, all through antifa,” Gibson said. “I think it’s time we use the masks against antifa. They don’t know who’s who, they don’t know what is going on. So we’re gonna have tons of people within antifa who are gonna start with them, who are gonna march with them back to us, and not only are they going to be causing havoc for antifa.”

But pepper spray will be among the less-lethal weapons at the rally, Gibson said. The rally will take place in a Portland waterfront park, where guns are allowed with a concealed carry permit.

This is going to get ugly, fast.

China says it will retaliate with tariffs on $60 billion in US goods

Source: CNBC

China is preparing to retaliate in the escalating trade war with tariffs on about $60 billion worth U.S. goods.

The import taxes would range in rates from 5 percent to 25 percent, the Chinese government said.

"The implementation date of the taxation measures will be subject to the actions of the US, and China reserves the right to continue to introduce other countermeasures," China's release said. "Any unilateral threat or blackmail will only lead to intensification of conflicts and damage to the interests of all parties."

China declared it will impose these new tariffs if the U.S. places more tariffs on Chinese imports. President Donald Trump is considering the U.S. raise proposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25 percent from the 10 percent rate his administration is currently mulling, the administration announced Wednesday.

Netflix won't stream Farrakhan documentary

Netflix will not stream a documentary about the music career of controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

The documentary, “Let’s Change the World: My Life’s Journey Through Music,” was set to become available on Netflix as of Aug. 1, according to a tweet from Farrakhan that has since been deleted.

A Netflix spokesperson explained to Fox News that the film was not supposed to be streamed at all, but announcements about the film coming to Netflix went up on various platforms because of an “internal miscommunication.”

“We apologize for any confusion this has caused,” the spokesperson added.

Farrakhan has become notorious for his homophobic and anti-Semitic comments. Twitter stripped him of his verified status earlier this year after he called Jewish people "Satanic."

BTW, why does it seem like the discussion of misogyny is always left out when it comes to some of these characters?

When there's a will, there's a way!
