Trump's budget chief is trying to protect his home state from tariffs

Source: McClatchy

President Donald Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney, is trying to use his influence to help a South Carolina business that could be badly wounded by the White House’s trade policies.

Mulvaney, a former South Carolina Republican congressman, has been making personal pleas to administration officials to protect the viability of Element Electronics, a television assembly plant in his old district that has said it will halt operations because of tariffs.

In a bid to get fairer trade deals for the United States, Trump is imposing and proposing tariffs on a wide swath of imported parts and supplies crucial to making domestic goods. Element says new tariffs on a television assembly part made in China would threaten its existence.

An official with the White House Office of Management and Budget would not comment on Mulvaney’s advocacy for Element, saying the office “do(es) not comment on internal deliberative processes.”

"Gesture of love": Photo of police officer breastfeeding malnourished baby goes viral

A police officer in Argentina performed a "gesture of love" after she heard a crying baby that needed to be fed. Officer Celeste Ayala breastfed the malnourished infant, a moment that was captured in a photo and went viral on social media.

Ayala was working her shift Tuesday at Sor María Ludovica in Buenos Aires when the 6-month-old baby was brought in along with five of her siblings by social workers to the hospital, according to Argentine news outlet Clarin. The children were all malnourished and the little girl's cries prompted Ayala, a mother of a newborn herself, to do something.

With the permission of hospital staff, she sprang into action, comforting the baby and breastfeeding her until she stopped weeping. One of her colleagues caught the special interaction in a photo.

"I want to make public this great gesture of love that you made today with that baby, who you did not know, but for who you did not hesitate to act like a mother," said Marcos Heredia, who posted the image to Facebook. "Things like that are not seen every day."

Asia Argento, Who Accused Weinstein, Made Deal With Her Own Accuser

The Italian actress and director Asia Argento was among the first women in the movie business to publicly accuse the producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. She became a leading figure in the #MeToo movement. Her boyfriend, the culinary television star Anthony Bourdain, eagerly joined the fight.

But in the months that followed her revelations about Mr. Weinstein last October, Ms. Argento quietly arranged to pay $380,000 to her own accuser: Jimmy Bennett, a young actor and rock musician who said she had sexually assaulted him in a California hotel room years earlier, when he was only two months past his 17th birthday. She was 37. The age of consent in California is 18.

That claim and the subsequent arrangement for payments are laid out in documents between lawyers for Ms. Argento and Mr. Bennett, a former child actor who once played her son in a movie.

The documents, which were sent to The New York Times through encrypted email by an unidentified party, include a selfie dated May 9, 2013, of the two lying in bed. As part of the agreement, Mr. Bennett, who is now 22, gave the photograph and its copyright to Ms. Argento, now 42. Three people familiar with the case said the documents were authentic.

Gretchen Whitmer announces Garland Gilchrist II as running mate

(WJBK) - The Democratic candidate for governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced her running mate will be former Detroit City Clerk candidate Garland Gilchrist II.

A native Detroiter, Gilchrist narrowly lost to incumbent City Clerk Janice Winfrey in 2017. He's a graduate of the University of Michigan and worked as a software engineer for Microsoft before managing social media for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

Gilchrist, who is 35 years old, also served as a political organizer for MoveOn.org.

He was on a short list of Democratic candidates that also included State Senator Vincent Gregory and Representative Rudy Hobbs, both of Southfield, and who have more political experience. But analysts say that Whitmer needed a spark when picking her running name. A formal announcement is expected in Lansing later Monday morning.

Trump hits New York Times for report implying White House counsel is a 'rat'

Source: The Hill

President Trump early Sunday attacked the “failing” New York Times for a report that he said implied White House Counsel Don McGahn must be a “John Dean type RAT.”

“The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel, he must be a John Dean type 'RAT.' But I allowed him and all others to testify - I didn’t have to. I have nothing to hide......,” Trump tweeted. "....and have demanded transparency so that this Rigged and Disgusting Witch Hunt can come to a close. So many lives have been ruined over nothing - McCarthyism at its WORST! Yet Mueller & his gang of Dems refuse to look at the real crimes on the other side - Media is even worse! "

Representation Matters: "Crazy Rich Asians"

Kimberly Yam
?Verified account @kimmythepooh

You’re 8 years old.
Your 3rd grade class orders chinese food & your father delivers it. You are so excited to see your pops in school. He’s your hero. But apparently other kids don’t think he’s so cool. They laugh at him and mimic his accent. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore.

You’re 9 years old.
You attend ballet camp. Someone tells you that another girl *hates* you. She thinks your eyes are an “ugly shape.” You don’t have the vocabulary to describe why that’s hurtful. But now, you hate your distinctly Asian face. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore.

You’re 16 years old.
It’s Halloween & 2 students come to class dressed as “Asian tourists.” They’ve taped their eyes back, strapped cameras around their necks and chucked up peace signs. You feel uncomfortable. When a teacher asks if you find the costumes offensive, you say no.

You don’t want people thinking you’re uptight. You laugh along with everyone else. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore.

You’re 17 years old.
You’re off to college & you meet other Asians. They have pride that you never had. You meet a boy & he wonders why you don’t speak your family’s tongue. Why your favorite food is grilled cheese, not xiao long bao. You say your family doesn’t live that way.

But you know you rejected your culture a long time ago. You know you refused to speak Chinese & you remember calling your mother’s food “disgusting.” It’s fucked. It clicks. It’s a race to reclaim everything you’ve hated about yourself. For the 1st time, you want to be Chinese.

You’re 20 years old.
You’ve spent the past several years repatriating yourself. You get your family’s name inked into your skin. That character is there forever. You won’t let anyone make you feel the way you did all those years ago. You love being Chinese.

You’re 25 years old.
You see a movie with an all-asian cast at a screening and for some reason you’re crying and you can’t stop. You’ve never seen a cast like this in Hollywood. Everyone is beautiful.
You’re so happy you’re Chinese.
