How Queer Women Powered the Suffrage Movement

For many suffragists, scholars have found, the freedom to choose whom and how they loved was tied deeply to the idea of voting rights.

In 1920, the suffragist Molly Dewson sat down to write a letter of congratulations to Maud Wood Park, who had just been chosen as the first president of the League of Women Voters, formed in anticipation of the passage of the 19th Amendment to help millions of women carry out their newfound right as voters.

“Partner and I have been bursting with pride and satisfaction,” she wrote. Dewson didn’t need to specify who “partner” was. Park already knew that Dewson was in a committed relationship with Polly Porter, whom she had met a decade earlier. The couple then settled down at a farm in Massachusetts (where they named their bulls after men they disliked).

Dewson “made every political decision, career decision based on how it would affect her relationship with Polly Porter,” Susan Ware, a historian and the author of “Partner and I” and “Why They Marched: Untold Stories of the Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote,” said in a phone interview.

Dewson was far from the only suffragist who had romantic relationships with women. Many of the women who fought for representation were rebels living nonnormative, queer lives.

QAnon Is Now Involved in an Alleged Child Kidnapping Case

A woman in Douglas County, Colorado, allegedly plotted a raid to kidnap her son from foster care with the help of QAnon — and now, the case is heading to trial.

Cynthia Abcug’s son was removed by Child Protective Services last year because authorities suspected she suffered from Munchausen-by-proxy, a mental health issue in which a parent or caregiver exaggerates or makes up or causes an illness or injury to someone in their care for attention, the Washington Post reported in January.

In September, Abcug’s 15-year-old daughter told a caseworker and the authorities that her mom had “gotten into some conspiracy theories” about “evil Satan worshippers and pedophiles.” She also spoke of an alleged plot by her mother and other QAnon truthers to retrieve her brother, which she believed was going to take place in October 2019, according to the Associated Press. Abcug also bought a gun “just in case anything happens” and had started going to a shooting range, her daughter said.

After her daughter was taken into Child Protective Services, Abcug, 50, was arrested last December in Montana and charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, a felony. On Thursday, a Douglas County judge ruled that enough evidence existed against 50-year-old Cynthia Abcug to proceed with the case.

MI Senate Majority Leader Shirkey generally OK with feds not sending any more relief funding: "Some states have crippled their economies, like Michigan, based on the actions taken, and we just need to suffer through it for a cycle or two until the economy gets back on track."

The Chicks, Billie Eilish among performers at Democratic National Convention

The Democratic National Convention has released a list of the musical acts that will be performing during next week’s dramatically downsized, 100-percent “virtual” convention.

The lineup includes John Legend, Leon Bridges, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Hudson, The Chicks, and Common.

The Chicks made headlines earlier this year when the groups, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, removed “Dixie” to distance themselves from any moniker that has any connection to the Old South.

Dolly Parton: "Do We Think Our Little White Asses Are the Only Ones That Matter?"

Dolly Parton Backs Black Lives Matter: “Do We Think Our Little White Asses Are the Only Ones That Matter?”

Dolly Parton has once again reminded us why we should all aspire to be more like Dolly Parton.

In a new Billboard cover story, the country legend shared her support for Black Lives Matter and the recent uprisings against police brutality and white supremacy. She also spoke candidly about her own mortality and the importance of drawing up a will.

On the topic of BLM, the 74-year-old proved that she’s definitely aligned with the times and fully onboard with the protests that have carried on since George Floyd’s murder at the hands of Minneapolis police. “I understand people having to make themselves known and felt and seen,” said Parton. “And of course, Black lives matter. Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!” The Queen of Nashville has officially spoken.

Parton also engaged in a discussion about how racist monuments and other antiquated Confederacy statues have been taken down in the last few months. The iconic artist actually did something similar in 2018, when she renamed her “Dixie Stampede” Civil War-themed attraction to “Dolly Parton’s Stampede”. Although she was clearly ahead of her time — The Dixie Chicks only changed their name this past June — Parton admitted that she was guilty of “innocent ignorance” back then.

FDA denies Henry Ford Health request to use hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 patients

Source: Detroit Free Press

Weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revoked emergency use authorization of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19, saying the drug doesn't help coronavirus patients and has potentially dangerous side effects, Henry Ford Health System filed for permission to continue using it.

The Detroit-based health system told the Free Press this week that it sought emergency use authorization July 6 to resume treating some COVID-19 patients with the drug, which is commonly used as an anti-malarial medication and for people with autoimmune diseases like lupus.

The request came four days after Henry Ford published a controversial study in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases that suggested hydroxychloroquine slashed the COVID-19 death rate in half. The peer-reviewed observational study contradicted other published reports that showed the drug doesn't help coronavirus patients and could cause heart rhythm problems in some people.

The FDA denied Henry Ford's request this week.
