Hush-hush preparations are underway at a hotel ballroom in Delaware.
WILMINGTON, Del. Just before midnight on Monday, workers darted in and out a side door of the grand old Hotel du Pont, pausing for brief cigarette breaks or a chat, then getting back to setting up for an unspecified event. The effort had been underway for hours, at least.
Cant tell you, one man said when asked why everyone was working so late.
The setup in an ornate ballroom soft purple and blue lighting, screens, possibly a sound system could be for anything, or anyone.
But as Mr. Bidens advisers prepare for an imminent vice-presidential announcement and Mr. Biden plans to accept the presidential nomination from Delaware next week, it is worth noting that the Hotel du Pont was where he announced his 1972 Senate candidacy. It is also where he has made major political appearances in the decades since including, in March, the last in-person event he held before the coronavirus shuttered the campaign trail for months.
Workers who were seen setting up for the event at the hotel appeared to be from BNY Production, a company that has been a frequent vendor for the Biden campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records. A truck from Wizard Studios, another event-production company that has worked for the campaign, was also parked outside the hotel on Monday.
By Tuesday morning, the doors to the street were closed, but an open door leading from the hotel lobby revealed large screens set up under the rooms chandeliers.
A Biden spokesman did not comment Tuesday morning when asked about the signs of a potential Biden event.

If you only needed one reason to vote for Biden, here it is (some sanity in the morning):
I'll call Dr. Fauci and ask him to stay on. I'll bring together top experts and leaders from both parties to chart a path forward.
We'll get it done, together.

Biden campaign puts VP team in place ahead of announcement
Source: NBC
WILMINGTON, Del. With Joe Bidens long-awaited decision on a running mate set to be revealed this week, his campaign has assembled a veteran roster of strategists to help navigate the crucible of a fall campaign.
The team includes a pair of trusted Biden veterans who played key roles during his time in the White House and are familiar with the value and potential pitfalls of being a supporting player on the presidential ticket.
Liz Allen, most recently a managing director at the Glover Park Group consulting firm, will be the running mates communications director. Allen served as a Biden spokesperson in the White House and later Deputy White House Communications Director as President Barack Obama found increasingly creative ways to promote his second-term initiatives.
Sheila Nix, who served as the chief of staff to Biden on the 2012 Obama reelection campaign and then joined Biden's team in the White House as chief of staff to second lady Jill Biden, will be a senior adviser to the running mate and her spouse. She comes to the running mates team from Tusk Strategies, where she focused on voter turnout initiatives.

Sterling Heights [Michigan] clerk receives dozens of late absentee ballots in mail
The late ballots, which now can't be legally counted despite being postmarked five days before the primary, could have been enough to change the outcome of one Democratic primary for the Macomb County Commission that was narrowly decided by 87 votes.
Sterling Heights clerk Melanie Ryska said the ballots arrived at her office Monday and were postmarked July 30 at "Metroplex," meaning they were likely processed at the either the U.S. Postal Service's Detroit or Pontiac mail facilities.
"This is quite uncommon for us," said Ryska, who has worked in election for 18 years and became the clerk of Michigan's fourth largest city in 2017.
A USPS spokeswoman did not immediately respond late Monday to a request for comment from Crain's.

New Zealand reports first coronavirus cases in 102 days: "We had all hoped not to find ourselves in this position again"
August 11, 2020 / 6:48 AM / CBS/AP
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Tuesday that authorities have found four cases of the coronavirus in one Auckland household from an unknown source. They mark the first reported cases of local transmission in the country in 102 days.
Ardern said Auckland, the nation's largest city, will be moved to Alert Level 3 from midday Wednesday through midnight Friday, meaning that people will be asked to stay at home, while bars and many other businesses will be closed.
"These three days will give us time to assess the situation, gather information, make sure we have widespread contact tracing so we can find out more about how this case arose and make decisions about how to respond to it once we have further information," Ardern said at a hastily called news conference late Tuesday.
"I know that this information will be very difficult to receive," Ardern said. "We had all hoped not to find ourselves in this position again. But we had also prepared for it. And as a team, we have also been here before."
