US defense officials contradict Trump: No indication yet of attack in Beirut

Source: CNN

(CNN)Three US Defense Department officials told CNN that as of Tuesday night there was no indication that the massive explosion that rocked Beirut on Tuesday were an "attack," contradicting an earlier claim from President Donald Trump.

While speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump offered sympathy and assistance to the people of Lebanon after the explosion, which left dozens dead and thousands injured and he referred to the incident as a "terrible attack." An estimated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse in the Port of Beirut exploded Tuesday, causing destruction throughout the Lebanese capital. As of Tuesday night, at least 78 people were reported killed and 4,000 injured.

"Let me begin by sending America's deepest sympathies to the people of Lebanon, where reports indicate that many, many people were killed, hundreds more were very badly wounded in a large explosion in Beirut," Trump said. "Our prayers go out to all the victims and their families. The United States ready to assist Lebanon."

But the defense officials, who declined to be identified so they could speak freely, said they didn't know what the President was talking about.

Methuen's police chief is one of the highest paid in the country -- and he says he deserves more

METHUEN — This community on the New Hampshire border may be smaller than 772 other American cities, but the salary of police Chief Joseph Solomon is anything but small. His salary of $326,707 in 2019 made Solomon one of the highest-paid police chiefs in the nation, paid more than his counterparts in Boston, New York, Chicago, and many other major urban areas.

And, unlike them, Solomon doesn’t have to face a serious crime problem: Methuen had one murder last year.

Still, Solomon believes he is underpaid.

He is refusing to take 10 unpaid furlough days to help the cash-strapped city work down a $7 million shortfall. He is the only department head to refuse the request from the city’s mayor, Neil Perry, who recently cut his own pay from $80,000 to $68,000 a year.

“Its a slap in the face of a city that is currently dealing with a 13 percent unemployment rate,” said D.J. Beauregard, a Methuen city councilor. “It’s absurdly disproportionate for the chief of a department of about 100 employees to be making one of the highest salaries in the nation.”

A defiant Solomon has said that, until he settles a pay dispute with the city, he won’t give up any of his income. Under Solomon’s unusual and complex five-year contract — which gives him a myriad of perks and a guarantee he is paid at least 2.6 times more than any patrol officer — the chief believes Methuen has underpaid him by at least $50,000 a year since 2018.

“I’m not in a position to be able to . . . forgo anything at this point,” Solomon told the host of a local Facebook live show in early July.

In a time when COVID-19 is crippling city finances and the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota has heightened scrutiny of spending on police, Solomon is holding out for higher pay even as he hands out layoff slips to his officers.

The city budget called for the layoff of eight police officers, though the mayor used reserve funds to rescind the layoffs of four of them. The other four, with a combined salary of about $274,000, include the city’s only Black patrolman. The patrolmen’s union is trying to save their jobs.

Neil Young Posts Lawsuit Against Trump Campaign Over Song Usage

Source: Rolling Stone

Neil Young posted a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s campaign to his Archives site Tuesday, claiming the President and his campaign does not have a proper license to play his songs “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk” at rallies.

It is unclear whether the suit has been officially filed; a representative for Young did not immediately reply to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment. Specific defendants associated with the campaign have yet to be added to the suit as well.

The lawsuit is the latest salvo in a long spat between Young and Trump that dates all the way back to June 2015, when Trump played “Rockin’ in the Free World” immediately after announcing his intention to run for president. Young expressed his displeasure then and did so again after Trump played the song at a 2018 rally — he expressed the same sentiment most recently after Trump played the Freedom cut at events in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mount Rushmore.

Young’s lawsuit states: “The Campaign does not now have, and did not at the time of the Tulsa rally, have a license or Plaintiff’s permission to play the two Songs [‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ and ‘Devil’s Sidewalk’] at any public political event.” Young is seeking “statutory damages in the maximum amount allowed for willful copyright infringement.”

When Covid Subsided, Israel Reopened Its Schools. It Didn't Go Well.

JERUSALEM — As the United States and other countries anxiously consider how to reopen schools, Israel, one of the first countries to do so, illustrates the dangers of moving too precipitously.

Confident it had beaten the coronavirus and desperate to reboot a devastated economy, the Israeli government invited the entire student body back in late May.

Within days, infections were reported at a Jerusalem high school, which quickly mushroomed into the largest outbreak in a single school in Israel, possibly the world.

The virus rippled out to the students’ homes and then to other schools and neighborhoods, ultimately infecting hundreds of students, teachers and relatives.

Other outbreaks forced hundreds of schools to close. Across the country, tens of thousands of students and teachers were quarantined.

Israel’s advice for other countries?

“They definitely should not do what we have done,” said Eli Waxman, a professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science and chairman of the team advising Israel’s National Security Council on the pandemic. “It was a major failure.”

...

In his inaugural speech, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a new budget that would deliver three things: “Jobs, jobs, jobs.” His new education minister, Yoav Gallant, said that the school system’s “immediate mission” was to allow parents to return to work with peace of mind.
