Michael Flynn once claimed Arabic signs on southern border guide 'radicalized Muslims' into US

Source: CNN

(CNN)Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's pick to be his national security adviser, claimed in an August radio interview that Arabic signs were present along the United States border with Mexico to guide potential state-sponsored terrorists and "radicalized Muslims" into the United States.

Flynn further said in the interview he had personally seen photos of such signs in Texas.

A CNN KFile review of available information about the terror threat along the US-Mexico border could not corroborate Flynn's claim. CNN's KFile asked Flynn for clarification about the Arabic signs, but received no reply. A Trump transition spokesman declined to comment. A spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) "respectfully" declined to comment.

"I know from my friends in the Border Patrol in CBP that there are countries -- radical Islamist countries, state-sponsored -- that are cutting deals with Mexican drug cartels for some of what they call the 'lanes of entry' into our country," Flynn said in an interview with Breitbart News on SiriusXM radio. "And I have personally seen the photos of the signage along those paths that are in Arabic. They're like way points along that path as you come in. Primarily, in this case the one that I saw was in Texas and it's literally, it's like signs, that say, in Arabic, 'this way, move to this point.' It's unbelievable."

John Glenn, American hero, aviation icon and former U.S. senator, dies at 95

Source: The Columbus Dispatch

His legend is other-worldly and now, in his 95th year, that’s where John Glenn has gone.

An authentic hero and genuine American icon, Glenn died this afternoon surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus after a remarkably healthy life spent almost from the cradle with Annie, his beloved wife of 73 years, who survives.

He, along with fellow aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright and moon-walker Neil Armstrong, truly made Ohio first in flight.

“John Glenn is, and always will be, Ohio’s ultimate hometown hero, and his passing today is an occasion for all of us to grieve," said Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich. "As we bow our heads and share our grief with his beloved wife, Annie, we must also turn to the skies, to salute his remarkable journeys and his long years of service to our state and nation.

AFL-CIO endorses Ellison for DNC chair

Source: Politico

The AFL-CIO is endorsing Rep. Keith Ellison to be chairman of the Democratic National Committee on Thursday.

"Representative Ellison meets the high standard working people expect from leaders of our political parties, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in a statement. He is a proven leader who will focus on year-round grassroots organizing to deliver for working families across America. Under his leadership, the Democratic Party will embody the values that our members stand for every day."

The AFL-CIO endorsement is a coup for Ellison given its prominence as one of the most high profile and influential labor organizations in the country.

An endorsement seemed imminent when a week earlier Trumka circulated a straw poll ballot among Executive Council members asking whether the labor groups should endorse Ellison for chair.

Texas Ag Commissioner On Pushing Fake News: 'I Report, You Decide (AUDIO)

Source: TPM

The Texas agricultural commissioner defended his practice of posting untrue stories on his Facebook page, where he has more than 320,000 followers, by saying he was “not a news organization.”

Responding to a Texas Tribune analysis published Saturday that found a pattern of plainly false stories on Miller’s public social media presence, Sid Miller called into the Austin-based KUT News on Wednesday to discuss the story.

<snip>

“I shouldn’t be held to that standard,” he said. “It’s like Fox News: I report, you decide if it’s true or not.”

After the interview was published online, Miller, who actively supported President-elect Donald Trump, posted a link to it on his Facebook page, writing: "I've got news for the Texas Tribune and their liberal elite media friends--I have never been politically correct and I am not about to start now, and I am glad that we will soon have a President in the White House who feels the same way!"

Michigan House Approves Strict New Voter ID Bill Over Dem Objections

Source: Detroit Free Press

Michigan’s GOP-led House of Representatives approved a stringent voter ID proposal on Wednesday night that Democrats warn could disproportionately affect properly registered minority and low-income voters, the Detroit News reported.

Under the proposed legislation, Michigan voters who show up to the polls without photo ID can cast provisional ballots but must bring ID to their local clerk’s office within 10 days of an election for the vote to be counted.

This is a significant change from current state law, which allows registered voters to vote on Election Day without IDs as long as they sign an affidavit affirming their identity under threat of perjury. The Detroit News reported that some 18,388 state residents took advantage of that option in the Nov. 8 election, many of them in heavily Democratic Wayne County, where majority-black Detroit is the county seat.

Donald Trump’s margin of victory over Hillary Clinton in the Great Lake State was 10,704 votes.

Anti-union bills pass Michigan House of Representatives

Source: Freep

LANSING -- The Michigan House of Representatives passed a pair of anti-union bills Wednesday night that make it harder for workers and unions to picket and easier for employers to hire workers to replace striking employees.

One bill would increase fines against picketers to $1,000 per person per day of a picket and $10,000 per day for an organization or union involved in the picket that is deemed to be an illegal mass picket. That bill passed on a mostly party-line vote of 57-50.

The other would repeal a law that requires employers to include information about an ongoing strike when they advertise to hire employees who will replace existing, but striking employees at a company. That bill passed on a vote of 59-48 on a mostly party line vote.

Democrats said the bill was an affront to peaceful protests and would allow companies to file complaints about pickets without showing any actual harm was done to their business.

There is a pants-less Mike Pence look-alike in Times Square

Source: Washington Post

Move over, all you Elmos and Power Rangers — there’s a new Times Square character. Meet “Mike Hot-Pence,” a guy who looks an awful lot like the Vice President-elect, and dresses like him, too .?.?. at least from the waist up.

Below the conservative navy blazer and tie that could have been filched from the actual Mike Pence’s closet, Mike Hot-Pence sports some very un-vice-presidential skimpy short shorts.

Like so many of the other costumed creatures in the touristy Manhattan hub, he’s looking for donations. But unlike most of the competition, the change Mike Hot-Pence busks is going to nonprofit groups.

<snip>

According to his Twitter feed, he’s been collecting money for organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the Natural Resources Defense Council. His hashtag? #activismishot.

Asked if he had anything he’d like to share with the real, pants-wearing Mike Pence, Pannell quipped, “You have to represent all people, not just the ones that look like you. And me.”

Distraught woman whose house burned down gets uplifting surprise

Source: Mashable

A massive fire destroyed eight buildings in Cambridge, Massachusetts, including the home of one cat lover, who got an uplifting surprise after the blaze was knocked down Saturday.

Despite the tragic loss of her home, firefighters were able to save her two cats. The woman was overjoyed to see her pets again amid the chaos, and her friend, Justin Khoo, captured the reunion in a touching video.

"My friend's house was involved in a massive fire. She didn't think her cats survived. Here she is finding them alive!" he wrote on Reddit.

"Really puts things into perspective," he continued in a comment. "She didn't even care about her house being gone, she just was happy her kitties were ok."

Trumps Lies About Voter Fraud Are Already Leading to New GOP Voter Suppression Efforts

Source: The Nation

Less than a month after Donald Trump unexpectedly carried Michigan by 10,000 votes, Republicans in the state legislature are already pushing to make it harder to vote. The presidential recount hasn’t even finished yet and Michigan Republicans are trying to pass a strict voter-ID law through the lame-duck legislative session before the end of this year.

Under current Michigan law, a voter who does not present photo ID at the polls can sign an affidavit confirming their identify, under penalty of perjury, and cast a regular ballot. Under the new bill, which passed the House Elections Commission on a 5-3 party-line vote on December 1, voters without strict ID would have to cast a provisional ballot and then return to their local clerk’s office within ten days of the election with photo ID to have their votes counted.

This change to Michigan’s election laws could make a big difference in future elections: 18,339 people without strict photo ID used the affidavit option to vote in 2016 – 8,000 votes greater than Trump’s margin of victory. One-third of the affidavits came from Detroit, where Hillary Clinton won 67 percent of the vote in Wayne County.

Already, Trump’s discredited lie that “millions” voted illegally in 2016 seems to be impacting Republican actions. “A multitude of candidates have raised the concerns about the integrity of elections,” said GOP Rep. Lisa Lyons, who sponsored the bill. “We need to respond to those questions. We are going to make sure tha

Portland to vote on taxing companies if CEO earns 100 times more than staff

Source: The Guardian

The city council of Portland in Oregon will vote on Wednesday whether to impose a tax on companies whose CEO’s pay exceeds the median salary of their workers by a ratio of more than 100-to-one.

The measure, which was proposed by Portland city commissioner and former environmental lawyer Steve Novick, will take advantage of the fact that new Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules will require companies to disclose their executive pay ratios for the first time beginning in 2017.

If it passes, experts said the tax would be the first of its kind.

Novick said that he was inspired by a similar measure proposed by the California state senate in 2014, which failed to reach the supermajority needed to make changes to the state tax code. He was also inspired by reading French economist Thomas Piketty’s book Capital.

“To me, after global warming, income inequality is the biggest challenge we face in our society,” Novick said. “It’s been absolutely frightful to see the divide between regular folks and the richest-of-the-rich. It’s economically destabilizing, it’s politically destabilizing, it’s unhealthy.”
