Ivanka Trump might leave White House if father wins 2020

Source: The Hill

President Trump's adviser and daughter Ivanka Trump signaled in a new interview that she could leave the White House if her father is reelected in 2020.

Asked in a CBS interview whether she would remain in the administration if her father wins the election, Trump said she is "driven first and foremost by my kids and their happiness."

"My decisions will always be flexible enough to ensure that their needs are being considered first and foremost," she said. "So they will really drive that answer for me.

"I think for me, I came down here — it's about the impact," she continued. "It's about being able to deliver for the forgotten men and women that I met over the course of two years as I campaigned around this country. And over the last two and a half years as I've traveled to almost every state in this nation. It's about providing pathways to opportunity."

Man who made 27,000 crosses for shooting victims is retiring

Source: WDIV

AURORA, IL – An Illinois man who made more than 27,000 crosses to commemorate victims of mass shootings across the country is retiring.

Greg Zanis came to realize, after 23 years, his Crosses for Losses ministry was beginning to take a personal and financial toll on him, according to The Beacon-News.

“I had a breaking point in El Paso,” he said, referring to the mass shooting outside of a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. “I hadn't slept for two days, it was 106 degrees and I collapsed from the pressure when I heard there were two more victims of the mass shooting.”

Zanis has set up crosses after the school shootings at Columbine, Sandy Hook and Parkland. He also placed crosses after the Las Vegas music festival shooting and the Orlando nightclub shooting.

Virginia School District To Give Students One Day Off Per Year For 'Civic Engagement'

Source: NPR

One of the largest school districts in the country is trying something new: Starting next month, students in Fairfax County, Va., can take one day off per school year to engage in political activism.

The plan has its roots in the 2018 shooting at a Parkland, Fla. high school that left 17 dead. In its aftermath came a rise in student activism unlike anything the Fairfax school district had ever seen, Fairfax School Board member Ryan McElveen tells NPR.

"We saw students wanting to take time out of the school day to lead protests and do things of that nature," says McElveen, who proposed the policy to the school board. "We and other school systems around the nation kind of scrambled to figure out how to handle those protests."

The result is a policy that McElveen says is a first in the nation. Students between 7th and 12th grades will get one excused absence per year for a "civic engagement activity." That might consist of attending a protest, or lobbying legislators in Washington or Richmond — anything that could make the students' voices heard. After submitting the form in advance, and checking in at school on the day of the absence, they can be on their way.
