Cook Political Report shifts Ohio, Iowa to 'toss up' in presidential race

Source: The Hill

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted the presidential race in Ohio and Iowa to a “toss up” on Tuesday from lean Republican, citing recent polls showing a tightening race between President Trump and Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden.

The independent online newsletter had moved the race in both states to “lean Republican” from “likely Republican” in mid-June, but on Tuesday said it decided to shift the race to a toss up as recent polls show a tight race.

Ohio and Iowa, two states Trump carried in 2016, are more critical for Trump to win than for Biden. Biden doesn’t necessarily need to carry either state to reach 270 electoral votes, but Trump likely can’t win without either state, Cook noted.

In Iowa, Cook highlighted three public polls that came out in recent weeks that showed a tight race between the candidates. The Des Moines Register survey found voters deadlocked a 47 percent a piece for each candidate, while a poll from The New York Times and Siena College found 45 percent backing Biden and 42 percent supporting Trump. A Monmouth University poll found Trump leading by 6 points, 50 percent to 44 percent.

Monica Lewinsky Is God's Gift to Twitter

Who knew Monica Lewinsky, the intern of record, would one day speak for all of us when she tweeted this in early September: “Just realized I am more scared of our government now than I was in 1998. And that’s saying a lot. A. LOT.”

Lewinsky, who has been a quiet force on Twitter since 2014, is recently rocking the sphere, claiming her voice in a very public forum after having been very publicly vilified—albeit before the age of social media. On Twitter, Lewinsky is a kind neighbor and saucy best friend. She dishes on challah recipes. She polls the Twitter abyss on what car she should get: “So very me. Can’t decide between a Subaru or a Tesla.” (It prompted a reply from Elon Musk saying that he’d be happy to give her one, and that she could return it if she wasn’t happy with it.) She’s a girl’s girl. Who knew? The social media platform provides a glimpse into a person who had been rendered as a flat surface for decades by the media. “I lived as a one-dimensional, mutated character for a very long time but I love that people connect to me on social media through these kinds of things,” she tells Vogue over the phone. “And when people connect for other reasons, it quiets those instances.”

Lewinsky seems Twitter-seasoned and breezy: Her banner image reads “Grateful AF.” in slate blue font on a millennial pink background. A segment of her bio reads “ex-beret model,” a reference to an infamous of picture of the young Lewinsky beaming and posing with former President Bill Clinton where she was wearing, yes, a beret. She has just shy of 1 million followers.

But her foray into social media wasn’t an easy one. She says that she was terrified about the prospect of joining the platform. It wasn’t until she spoke about the effects of bullying at a 30 Under 30 conference in 2014 that Forbes chief content officer Randall Lane convinced her to register. “He said ‘Listen, you can’t take up this crusade around online shaming, and online bullying, and these things, if you’re not really in the conversation and you’re just sort of chiming in from the sidelines,’” she says. “And he suggested that I publicly join Twitter.”

I really admire this woman; she went through hell and came out on the other side in a positive, impactful way.

AG Nessel announces criminal investigation of group seeking repeal of Whitmer powers

LANSING — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is launching a criminal investigation into Unlock Michigan — the committee collecting signatures to repeal an emergency powers law Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is using to address the coronavirus pandemic — Nessel said Monday.

Nessel's announcement follows a series of Detroit Free Press articles about questionable tactics employed by paid signature collectors working on the Unlock Michigan campaign.

"Our ballot initiative process allows efforts with strong public support to be presented to the Legislature," Nessel said in a news release. "But that process becomes tainted when petition circulators manipulate and cheat to serve their own agendas. My office will investigate these allegations, and if there is a violation of law, we will prosecute those responsible.”

The Free Press reported Sept. 22 on a Sept. 4 Unlock Michigan training session for signature collectors that was secretly recorded by a representative of Keep Michigan Safe, the group opposing efforts to repeal the Emergency Powers of Governor Act of 1945, which Whitmer is using as the legal underpinning for emergency orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ex-Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale knocked to the ground to end standoff, body camera footage shows.

FORT LAUDERDALE — Bradley Parscale, former campaign manager to president Donald Trump, was in the middle of an armed standoff with police at his Fort Lauderdale home when unexpected help arrived: Officer Christopher Wilson, a personal friend.

Fort Lauderdale police on Monday released records detailing how Sunday’s standoff unfolded at Parscale’s home, starting with his wife’s call for help and ending with officers detaining Parscale for psychiatric evaluation. Officers recovered 10 firearms from his home, including several pistols, a shotgun and rifle, and saw that Parscale’s wife had bruises on her arm and face.

Bradley Parscale’s standoff with police officers happened Sunday afternoon in the 2300 block of DeSoto Drive, where Parscale, 44, lives with his wife, Candice Parscale.

The confrontation with officers started after an argument between the couple. Candice Parscale says her husband chambered a round into a pistol during a heated exchange between the two.

...

Officer Timothy Skaggs was the first to arrive at the neighbor’s house, records show. He witnessed bruising on Candice Parscale’s arm and face. She told him that the injuries had come from Bradley Parscale, though she said she’d gotten them earlier that week.
