The Case for Abolishing the DHS

Excellent read.

One of the many cogent points:

..evidence that the terror threat was never as great as we thought.
A rather pathetic Heritage Foundation list of 50 terrorist plots against the U.S. foiled since Sept. 11 includes such incidents as a plan to use a blowtorch to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge and “allegedly lying about attending a terrorist training center”—but nothing involving weapons of mass destruction.
Further, these are alleged plots. The list of plausible plots, let alone actual crimes, is considerably smaller.
From 2005 to 2010, federal attorneys declined (PDF) to bring any charges against 67 percent of alleged terrorism-related cases referred to them from law enforcement agencies.

and
A
s an example, economist Veronique de Rugy has highlighted the $557,400 given to North Pole, Alaska, (population 1,570), for homeland security rescue and communications equipment. “If power companies invested in infrastructure the way DHS and Congress fight terrorism, a New Yorker wouldn’t be able to run a hair dryer, but everyone in Bozeman, Mont., could light up a stadium,” de Rugy complained.

and the best part is a hint that the "terra" hype has a monetary reward:
Its very existence suggests the domestic response to the threat of terror is of equal weight with defense, transport, health, labor, or foreign affairs. It heaps largesse on a range of contractors, all of whom have an interest in hyping the threat of terror to ensure the money keeps flowing.

Remember the Concordia shipwreck off Italy?

Court convicts 5 Costa Crociere employees

GROSSETO, Italy—An Italian court has accepted plea bargains for five Costa Crociere employees in the shipwreck that killed 32 crew and passengers, convicting all of multiple manslaughter and negligence.

The court in Grosseto on Saturday handed down the highest sentence to the crisis coordinator for Costa Crociere, Roberto Ferranini, who was sentenced to two years and 10 months. The ship's hotel director was sentenced to two years and six months while two bridge officers and a helmsman got sentences ranging from one year and eight months to one year and 11 months.

The plea bargains were handled separately from the trial of Costa Concordia captain, who is charged with manslaughter for causing the January 2012 shipwreck off the Tuscan island of Giglio and abandoning the vessel with thousands aboard.

Another oil carrying train derailment....

Hazmat crews respond to oil train derailment in eastern New Orleans rail yard

A tanker train carrying crude oil came off the track in the rail yard near the intersection of Almonaster Blvd and Jourdan Road on Friday afternoon, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. The New Orleans Fire Department dispatched a hazardous materials crew to the eastern New Orleans site.

Crews responded just before 5:50 p.m. No injuries have been reported as a result of the derailment. It is not yet known whether any of the train's crude oil cargo has spilled.

NYC DU-ers...I have a question for you...

Several movies set in NYC show subway entrances, which have signs saying:

"Enter with or buy Metrocard
at all times.
See agent across the street"

Poor wording...
"buy Metro Card at all times"
what the heck does that mean?

Lo tech very effective mosquito repellent....

A fan..oscillating or even box fan.

Obviously this for when you are sitting still outdoors, like on a deck.
But it works.
Would work in a closed room if mosquitoes were present, I should think.

Outsmarting bugs with a fan may be a poorly known strategy. But the method, it turns out, is endorsed by the American Mosquito Control Association, a nonprofit group based in Mount Laurel, N.J., that publishes a journal bearing its name.

“Mosquitoes are relatively weak fliers,” it says on its Web site, “so placing a large fan on your deck can provide a low-tech solution.” The group says mosquitoes fly slowly — from roughly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, depending on the species.

Scientists have identified another factor. The breeze from a fan disperses the human emanations that allow female mosquitoes to zero in on us. (The guys are innocent! Honest! Females need the stolen blood for egg making.)

A very effective, cheap remedy for mosquito bites:
dab some mentholatum on the bite. (like Vaporub, generic stuff works fine)

Reapply as needed ( when it starts to itch again). Usually 2-3 applications are all that is needed in one day,
it stops the development of the itch spot, stops itch. Also excellent for fire ant bites, and I would think bee stings, too.

House Republican bill would make all the illegal mortgage tricks ...legal.

Remember the robo-signing?
Remember the stories of people being foreclosed on who had NO outstanding mortgage?
Remember all the people who had legit mortgage problems having to go to court to prove their rights?
Remember the Gov't had to force the banks to stop ripping off homeowners, and the banks STILL continued to rip them off?

This bill would create a MERS like entity that makes it all legal and pre-empts all state/Federal laws on foreclosure.

"States have always controlled property law, and this Republican bill would wrest away that state control,
putting it not in the hands of the federal government, but a private entity. "

And it is being introduced by Jeb Hensarling, the chair of the House Financial Services Committee.
Hensarling has already gotten into trouble this year for taking a ski vacation/fundraiser with Wall Street lobbyists, including an official from the American Securitization Forum, just six weeks after getting the Financial Services Committee gavel.
Financial interests donated over $1 million to Hensarling in the last election cycle.

The above is my attempt to summarize some of the bill, but there is a lot more, and I urge anyone who owns a home
or who wants to own a home to read the link.

note the use of the phrases "free market" and "Beaking Down Barriers for Private invesment Capital"

3 killed, when pickup carrying more than 14 children flipped on Ala. highway.

Not until I read the story did I find:
Alabama in one of 19 states in the nation that has no restrictions on passengers riding in cargo areas of pickups.
19!!!!!!

Plus the pickup was speeding at more than 65 mph ( 50 is highway limit)
apparently blew a tire, flipped 4 times, then caught fire.

Is your state one of the 19????
