Spelling out the problem

December 18, 2012

I have now officially heard it all; Human waves of first graders

I remember when conservatives thought this was a less than optimal tactic when Iran did it with their kids against Iraq.

The website is remarkably aptly named I must say.

I'd also like us to encourage people to gang rush shooters, rather than following their instincts to hide; if we drilled it into young people that the correct thing to do is for everyone to instantly run at the guy with the gun, these sorts of mass shootings would be less deadly, because even a guy with a very powerful weapon can be brought down by 8-12 unarmed bodies piling on him at once.

It's not just father's guns that kill kids

I just did a search on "shot "with mother's gun"" and got this.

My God, it's full of stars

The weather isn't going to cooperate and let me get the shot I wanted for this month's contest but I did manage to get a couple of a local pond at five am, those are the actual stars reflected in the water and if you look closely you can see the mist rising toward the far side. That's not the sunrise, it's light pollution reflected off thin clouds.

The scene itself was quite ethereal but I failed to capture it to my satisfaction, the pond was so still it really did look full of stars, there's a lot more in the original images but shrinking them to 800 width just wiped out most of the fainter ones.

90 seconds at f2.0 and ISO 800, Canon S90.

I realize it's triggered by content but I just got this ad in GD and was kind of taken aback

Not a good choice right at the moment, Adbot.

I'm starting to think the the guns themselves are just a symptom

It's what it took in terms of fear generating propaganda to get us to buy so many guns in the first place that is the real problem.

What we are seeing today is the culmination of a long strategy by the gun makers to maintain profitability in the face of a shrinking customer base.

If you don't have more customers to sell to then you have to sell more units to the customers you do have in order to maintain profitability and generate value for the shareholders.

The gun manufacturers have sold more guns to fewer customers by scaring the crap out of those customers with a decades long propaganda campaign designed by top professionals in the field of advertising and psychology. Spend a week uncritically listening to right wing talk radio and watching Fox and you'll be terrified the thugs are about to break down your door.

Pontius Pilate had the excuse the crowd was howling for Jesus' blood right outside his door, the gun manufacturers made the decisions they did strictly for profit, they and their enablers will never be able to wash the blood of innocents from them.
