A study released a few days ago by researchers at UW-Milwaukee shows that Wisconsin, long known to be among the worst in racial disparities in the criminal justice system, is in fact the worst — by a long shot.
Using 2010 census data, the study shows that 12.8 percent of the state's African-American men are now behind bars in state prison or local jails, twice the national average of 6.7 percent.
Wisconsin's rate far exceeds the 9.7-percent incarceration rate for African-American men in Oklahoma, which come in at No. 2 on the list. (It's interesting to note that at 2.1 percent, Oklahoma also has the highest rate of incarcerating white men.)
According to the report, one in eight black men in Wisconsin is now behind bars — a staggering statistic, especially given that the rate for white men is 1.24 percent, or 1 in 81 men — almost identical to the national average.
The report shows that Wisconsin also leads the nation in the rate of locking up Native American men, 7.6 percent, just ahead of South Dakota, where 7.3 percent of Native American men are behind bars.
"The volume of black males of prime working age imprisoned has increased to such an extent that over half of all African-American men from Milwaukee County in their 30s and half of men in their early 40s have been or currently are in adult DOC correctional institutions," the report says.

Just for scale and proof that racial issues are sometimes much deeper than a simple red state/blue state dichotomy, in Alabama the incarceration rate for black men is 5.4 percent; in Mississippi it's 5.2 percent.

Lindsay Boehner, the anti-pot House Speaker’s eldest daughter, is getting ready to marry Jamaica-born construction worker Dominic Lakhan, according the Boca Raton-based National Enquirer.
And the 38-year-old groom was once arrested by sheriff’s deputies for possession of marijuana.
Records show, the Enquirer reports, that Lakhan was pulled over for a traffic violation in Pembroke Pines back in 2006.
And not only was Lakhan driving with an opened can of Natural Lite beer, the report reads, there was an “odor of burnt cannabis emitting from the interior of the vehicle.”
“A search of the vehicle revealed two bags containing approximately 2 grams cannabis . . . inside the center of the ashtray. Suspect admitted to the possession of the cannabis, stating that it was for personal use.”
Lakhan was arrested and charged with misdemeanor pot possession.
Lindsay Boehner and Lakhan, by the way, are already living together in a rented house on east side of Delray. Both are described by neighbors as “really cool.”
Meanwhile, the perpetually-tanned John Boehner, a GOP congressman from Ohio, is adamantly against the use of pot, even for medicinal purposes.

To be honest I don't know how newsworthy it is to some people here. But in an era where so much of the GOP movement is based on demographic animosity, I think its thread worthy. And yes, I think the groom's ethnic background more than trumps his drug past when it comes to politics.
Maryland prison guards helped gangs smuggle drugs, fathered inmate's children

Thirteen female Maryland prison guards have been indicted on charges that they assisted a powerful prison gang with a money-laundering and drug-trafficking scheme while the gang leaders sat behind bars.
The guards were charged by the Maryland US Attorney’s Office after the indictment was unsealed in federal court on Tuesday, according to the Washington Post. The guards are accused of smuggling cell phones, prescription pills and other contraband into Baltimore City Detention Center at the behest of Tavon White, the alleged leader of the Black Guerilla Family gang, or BGF.
White and six other inmates as well as five “outside suppliers” were also indicted. Prosecutors claimed White had sexual relations with at least four of the guards and had fathered five children with them since he was incarcerated in 2009 after an attempted murder conviction.
“Correctional officers were in bed with BGF inmates, in violation of the first principle of prison management,” US Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein told reporters. “Preventing prison corruption requires intensive screening at prison entrances and punishment for employees who consort with inmates or bring cell phones and drugs into correctional facilities.”

Mother of Boston bombing suspects arrested last year for 'stealing $1,600 worth of clothes

The mother of the two Chechnyan brothers suspected of setting off two bombs at the Boston Marathon was arrested last year for allegedly stealing $1,600 worth of clothes from the upscale department store Lord and Taylor.
Zubeidat K. Tsarnaeva, 45, was charged with two counts of malicious/wanton damage and defacement to property after allegedly swiping the merchandise from a Lord & Taylor in Natick, Mass. in June 2012.

Demographically the Senate is also older, and far richer than the general public they are suppose to represent. They also come from States that disproportionately have smaller populations (and therefore greater representation in Congress) than people from bigger states. These Senators are also more likely to hail from welfare states instead of donor states.

The writers of the constitution never intended for it to be that unbalanced and that undemocratic.
This is part of the reason something with even 90% support nationwide can fail.

Japan's population suffers biggest fall in history
The population across the Japanese archipelago dropped by around 284,000 to an estimated 127.5 million by October last year, the figures compiled by the government's Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry found.
The number of elderly people aged 65 or over surpassed 30 million for the first time, accounting for as much as 24 per cent of the population – in contrast to children aged 14 and under which decreased to a record low of 13 per cent.
A dwindling birthrate, with deaths continuing to outnumber baby arrivals, combined with the postwar baby boom generation reaching retirement age as well as strict immigration laws are factors fuelling the declining population.
Japan's government faces taking strong measures to tackle the consequences of its ageing society, with a sharp rise in welfare costs and medical care demands forecast in coming years combined with a drop in workforce and national tax revenues.
