Corporate America throws weight behind gun controls

Source: The Hill

Corporate America is taking the lead on gun control as Congress slides back into gridlock on the issue.

Several major retailers have decided to impose new restrictions on firearm sales, while numerous companies have moved to cut ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The business moves underscore the growing sense that the political winds are shifting on gun control following the latest mass shooting at a Florida high school.

Intelligence veterans sound the alarm over the House Intelligence Committee's partisan war

Source: Business Insider

There's a wall being built in Washington, but it has nothing to do with Mexico.

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee have reportedly proposed constructing a physical wall between themselves and the committee's Democrats in its secure meeting spaces, according to CBS News.

But the breakdown in relations on the panel long predates the alleged proposal - and now, experts are sounding the alarm over its potential national-security ramifications.

Is the Star-Spangled Banner your national anthem?

Politico has a piece, out today, pointing out that Francis Scott Key's poem became our national anthem in 1931; and my question - is...

Is our national anthem your patriotic treasure?

As for me, the paradigm that I must stand and sing Is repulsive; because the song seeks to honor the fight to be free from tyranny...

...but our nation has become the EMPIRE of tyrants!

We bomb, kill, murder and worse, under false pretense; and our nation is corrupt - throughout.

Our service men & women are noble warriors.

But our military is a bully of the worst order; and outer commander-in-chief would nuke 1/2 the world if it saves him from his plight (or he could profit from it).

Here is the history article remarks by Politico..

...On this day in 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a bill designating “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the official national anthem of the United States. The anthem had been recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889, and by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

The playing of the song during the seventh-inning stretch of the first game of the 1918 World Series, and thereafter during each game of the series, is often erroneously cited as the first instance that the anthem was played at a baseball game.

On April 15, 1929, Rep. John Linthicum (D-Md.) (1867-1932) introduced legislation that would make the song the national anthem. Francis Scott Key had written the lyrics in a poem in 1814 during the British siege of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor.

Key (1779-1843) was a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet who had witnessed the bombardment of the fort by ships of the British Royal Navy during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying above the fort before the American victory.

The Memo: White House reels after week of upheaval

Source: The Hill

The Trump administration is scrambling to keep its footing after being hit by several gut punches over the past week.

In rapid succession, communications director Hope Hicks announced her imminent departure; several damaging stories about senior adviser Jared Kushner emerged; new tariffs on steel and aluminum were announced by President Trump to the consternation of key aides; and the commander in chief’s tone vacillated on gun control.

Amid all this, Trump once again took aim at Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter, and the White House had to deny that the departure of two major figures — national security adviser H.R. McMaster and chief economic adviser Gary Cohn — was in the works.

The administration’s capacity for chaos is unlike any in recent memory. Many Washington Republicans express horror at the never-ending controversies

CNN - The great unraveling: Trump's allies are really worried about him

Not since Richard Nixon started talking to the portraits on the walls of the West Wing has a president seemed so alone against the world.

One source -- who is a presidential ally -- is worried, really worried. The source says this past week is "different," that advisers are scared the President is spiraling, lashing out, just out of control.

For example: Demanding to hold a public session where he made promises on trade tariffs before his staff was ready, not to mention willing. "This has real economic impact," says the source, as the Dow dropped 420 points after the President's news Thursday. "Something is very wrong."

Even by Trumpian standards, the chaos and the unraveling at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are a stunning -- and recurring -- problem.

REPS LIEU & RICE SEEK FBI INVESTIGATION POTENTIAL ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN PAY BY TRUMP ASSOCIATES

Source: House.Gov

PRESS RELEASE: ....Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congresswoman Kathleen Rice (D-NY) requested that FBI Director Christopher Wray open an investigation into two questionable payments made by President Trump’s longtime associates during the election. Just before the election, President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen made a $130,000 payment to Stephanie Clifford, who allegedly had an affair with President Trump, as a way to buy her silence. Similarly, the National Enquirer paid Karen McDougal, another person who allegedly had an affair with Mr. Trump, $150,000 for her story, only to never publish it. If these allegations of improper payments are true, they could represent marked violations of Federal Election laws.

U.S. envoy for North Korea to retire after Trump rejects unconditional talks

Source: Reuters

The U.S. special envoy for North Korea plans to retire on Friday, the State Department said just hours after President Donald Trump again rejected talks to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis unless conditions are met.

South Korean-born Joseph Yun, a strong advocate for engagement with Pyongyang, has led U.S. contact with North Korea, quietly pursuing direct diplomacy since taking his post under former President Barack Obama in 2016.

Yun's departure leaves the State Department without a point person for North Korea policy at a time Pyongyang has signaled it may be willing to talk to the United States after a period of diplomatic contacts with South Korea during the Winter Olympics.

The special envoy's authority to engage with North Korea appeared to be undercut by a tug-of-war between the White House and State Department over North Korea policy under Trump.
