The office of Republican Rep. Todd Akin is reacting angrily to a quote attributed to GOP activist Karl Rove that joked about the idea of the Missouri Senate candidate being murdered.
Bloomberg Businessweek's website reported Friday that Rove's comment came at a GOP donors' breakfast at the Tampa Club in Florida. The site says Rove quipped to the audience:
A Rove spokesman didn't immediately return a call and email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Akin's office issued a statement calling the quote deeply disturbing, given that the FBI has been investigating threats against Akin after his comments that women's bodies can shut down pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

How bad was Mitt Romneys acceptance speech? According to Intrade, the odds of Obama being reelected have increased from 55.7% before the speech to 56.8% after.
Bloomberg reported that,http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-31/intrade-puts-obama-re-election-odds-at-56-8-after-speech.html
The odds that President Barack Obama will be re-elected on Nov. 6 rose to 56.8 percent after the Republicans concluded their nominating convention, according to online prediction market Intrade. Obamas odds, at 10:21 a.m. New York time, compared with a 43.3 percent chance for a victory by Republican nominee Mitt Romney, according to bets made at the Dublin-based bookmaker. Obamas chances increased from 55.7 percent yesterday, while Romneys dropped slightly from 43.4 percent.
Anyone looking for a big bounce in support for Mitt Romney after that speech probably shouldnt be holding their breath. The speech was an underwhelming disjointed mess with no theme, no vision, and at times seemingly no idea where it was going. Mitt Romneys speech was essentially a longer more drawn out version of his stump speech. If you have heard Romney speak in the last five years, then youve heard this speech before. But it takes a special kind of fail to give a national address, and see your opponents odds of success increase.
The lowered odds on Romney highlight his main problem. The more voters see and hear from him, the less they like him. This phenomenon presented itself first during the Republican primary. In state after state, the more Romney campaigned, the more his approval numbers dropped. His numbers experienced a bit of an uptick after he clinched the nomination and got off the campaign trail, but his first big step on the national stage revealed same underwhelming and unlikable Romney. Mitt Romney not only failed to redefine his campaign, but he may have hurt himself with voters. In a bad economy, voters are always open to the idea of tossing out incumbents, but it is up to the challengers to make the case that they can do a better job. Mitt Romney didnt do that.

. . if Republicans do not do better among Latinos, the party wont just be worrying about holding on to Florida, he said. Were going to be talking about how not to lose Texas.
Here is the heart of what I'm talking about.
TAMPA, Fla. -- The GOP risks being relegated to being a minority party for years if it fails to find a way to make that connection with Latino voters, former Republican national chairman Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida warned Wednesday.
Speaking along with Martinez at a forum on Republicans and Latinos, sponsored by ABC News, Univision and the National Journal, Republican consultant Ana Navarro offered an even blunter assessment of the partys current standing.
Where his numbers are right now, we should be pressing the panic button, she said, referring to Mitt Romneys level of Latino support.
The party had a huge missed opportunity to resolve its tensions in 2007, when Republican opposition forced President George W. Bush to scrap his effort to push a comprehensive immigration reform bill, said Martinez, who was secretary of Housing and Urban Development in Bushs Cabinet and then served one term in the Senate. He was chairman of the party in 2006 and 2007.
Bushs bill would have toughened border security and allowed some of the countrys estimated 11 million illegal residents to become citizens. Since the bills failure, the party has lost its way on immigration, Martinez said. We have to go back to the drawing board.
The mathematics of the issue are stark, said GOP pollster Whit Ayres. Theres a critical need for Republican candidates to do a great deal better among Latinos than they currently are, he said.

HOW BAD IS IT? GOP Consultant on Romney “We Should Be Pressing the PANIC BUTTON”
No, I'm not talking about the chair or InvisibleObama, I'm talking about the invisible GOP effort to win over the fastest growing demographic in America, Latino voters. Basically, Mitt Romney needs to win a higher percentage of white people than Ronald Reagan did. Good luck with that. Say what you will about Reagan, but I think we can all agree that Mitt Romney is no Ronald Reagan. So what happens when you place all your eggs in the shrinking demographic of "Angry White Guys" while entirely ignoring and alienating the quickly growing Latino demographic? You end up with statements coming out of GOP pollster's that sound like this . . .

Oscar-winning actor and director Clint Eastwood mocked President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during a surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, appearing shortly before Mitt Romney took the stage to give his headline speech. Eastwood's speech was defined by a pretend and at times rambling conversation with an imaginary Obama, symbolized by an empty chair to the actor's left. Throughout, Eastwood mixed jokes with tough talk to the delight of the crowd.
"WE OWN THIS COUNTRY," Eastwood said, drawing chants of "USA!" and an extended ovation. "... Politicians are employees of ours."
Eastwood intermittently turned to the empty chair, pretended the president was sitting next to him, and asked a smattering of questions. "Mr. President, how do you handle promises that you made when you were running for election," he asked. "I mean, what do you say to people?"
Eastwood, who delivered the speech without a teleprompter, recalled the emotion when Obama won the presidency four years ago. "Everyone was crying, Oprah was crying. I was even crying," he said. "I haven't cried that hard since I found out that there are 23 million unemployed people in our country and that is something to cry for." Eastwood also criticized Obama's Afghanistan strategy and took shots at Biden. "Of course we all know that Biden is the intellect of the Democratic Party," he said. "Kind of a grin with a body behind it."

Lets talk about your polling, Benson said. He grabbed from my hand an Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor survey showing that middle-class blacks and Hispanics are far more optimistic about their childrens future than are whites of the same economic status. What do you think the unemployment rate is among blacks? In Detroit, its probably 40 percent. If the unemployment rate is that high, why is it that they are so optimistic about their future and the future of their children?
Benson paused, heard no reply, and answered his own question.
Subsidization.
http://www.nationaljournal.com/2012-election/why-and-how-romney-is-playing-the-race-card-20120829
Subsidization. That's code for welfare. As a side note, I didn't see 40 percent unemployment in Detroit. In fact, I saw a lot of people working, and a lot of revival going on. Not nearly enough. But still, this image of Detroit as a place where unemployed people are left to languish is equally inaccurate.
Fornier doesn't shy away from the translation, either.
I share this story to crack the code the subtle language of distrust and prejudice that whites use to communicate deep-set fears, and that cynical politicians translate into votes. Translating Miller and Benson:
Subsidization = Welfare
Generational Apathy = Lazy
They Slept All Day = Blacks Sleep All Day
I Feel Like a Fool = Im Mad As Hell
He hits the nail on the head right here, and it's working. Greg Sargent:
As Ive been saying, Romneys welfare strategy is all about reviving an old-school politics thats designed to redirect middle-class and lower-middle-class resentment downwards. The main Romney ad on the topic actually shows a worker wiping the sweat off his brow while a narrator tells you that Clinton (the good Democrat who did away with handouts to the undeserving) required work for welfare, while Obama (the bad kind of Democrat who wants to take away whats rightfully yours and redistribute it to others) wants to send people welfare checks for not working.

ROMNEY THUGS: GOP Convention Confiscating Ron Paul SIGNS
It remains an open question. Congressman Paul has not endorsed Romney, and the Republican National Committee has angered many Paul supporters by changing its rules and procedures specifically to undercut Paul's influence. For example, though Paul supporters had managed to capture 20 of Maine's 24 delegate slots, the GOP replaced 10 of them. Some Paul supporters walked out of the convention in protest.
But images broadcast from the convention floor give little sense of a potential rift. All signs trumpet Romney campaign themes and mention only two people Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan. But that doesn't mean there aren't Ron Paul signs out there. As a Ron Paul tribute played on the large screen behind the podium Wednesday night, Paul supporters rose throughout the hall to cheer. But when one began waving a "Ron Paul 2012" sign, then... Watch the video and see what happened.
Security at the convention has been taking away Ron Paul signs, The Huffington Post reports. When one delegate resorted to waving a Ron Paul mouse pad at the camera, that, too, was confiscated, according to the report. "They're violating the integrity of their own process," Mike Zentz, an alternate delegate for Paul from Honolulu, told HuffPo. "What's the point of the convention if they won't listen to the voice of their own people? We may as well just ask the RNC to pick the nominee from now on."

Paul Ryan's speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa was full of wrong and misleading statements. If you've seen any coverage of it, you know that the consensus among journalists and independent observers is that it was factually challenged.
As the National Journal stated:
"Paul Ryan is long on style, shorter on facts"
Paul Ryan failed to offer one constructive idea about what he would do to move the country forward.

He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act. He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin -- a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush.
Paul Ryan failed to offer one constructive idea about what he would do to move the country forward.
