Ruth Bader Ginsburg Says She Never Should’ve Waded Into Colin Kaepernick Controversy
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is walking back comments she made earlier this week about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernicks decision not to stand during the the national anthem.
In an interview to promote her first book, My Own Words, Ginsburg told Yahoos Katie Couric that the football players stance was dumb. A few days later, Kaepernick replied that the justices criticism was disappointing, according to The Mercury News.
In a statement Friday, Ginsburg appeared contrite about her remarks.
Barely aware of the incident or its purpose, my comments were inappropriately dismissive and harsh, she said. I should have declined to respond.
Ginsburgs response suggests she wasnt up to speed on the impetus behind Kaepernicks protest or what it meant in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement and demonstrations against police brutality.
More than a few fans and followers of the 83-year-old justice were not too happy with her comments.
Slates Mark Joseph Stern wrote a thoughtful column about the mishap and why many progressives who otherwise support people of colors struggles for equality still have a hard time standing in complete solidarity with them.
What would emerge [from the controversy] is a justice admirable but imperfect, like any icon who argues passionately for minority rights in the abstract without fully understanding how each new generation puts those principles into practice, Stern wrote. He pointed to rulings in which Ginsburg has stood as a staunch defender of voting rights for black people.
One can disagree without being disagreeable, wrote the founders of a Tumblr page dedicated to the Notorious RBG, Ginsburgs internet moniker. Regarding her recent remarks about athletes peaceful protest, we respectfully disagree.

The Trump campaign has melted down just days before the first presidential debate as they are low on cash and realizing that Hillary Clinton is out organizing them and winning on the ground.
Politico reported:
Frustration is growing within Donald Trumps campaign over the Republican nominees yawning money gap with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton just as the presidential race heads into its final fall stretch.
Trumps top advisers have held a series of tense conversations in recent days about how to close a fundraising hole thats grown to over $200 million a deficit thats led Trump to essentially cede the TV airwaves to his Democratic rival. The discussions, which were relayed by more than a half-dozen sources, have veered into finger pointing, with some participants pinning the blame on the Republican National Committee or on Steven Mnuchin, Trumps national finance chairman and a newcomer to the political scene.
.
The flare-up comes at a critical juncture in the campaign, as both sides turn their attention to voter turnout. Clinton has used her formidable financial advantage to significantly out-organize Trump, investing seven times the amount of money on TV ads and opening up dozens more swing-state field offices than her Republican opponent.
Winning campaigns arent plagued by finger-pointing and infighting. Bitter internal fights ar

Nine Black Lives Matter protesters in the United Kingdom will not serve any jail time nor pay any fines after shutting down London City Airport on September 6 to raise awareness about environmental racismspecifically air pollution emitted from the airport and its detrimental effects on black people in the surrounding neighborhoods of Newham, the Daily Mail UK reports.
Most UK media outlets report that all nine protesters are white; however, the Daily Mail reports that only eight of them are white.
Natalie Fiennes, 25, cousin of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes; Ben Tippet, 24; William Pettifer, 27; Esme Waldron, 23; Alex Etchart, 26; Richard Collett-White, 23; Deborah Francis-Grayson, 31; Sama Baka, 27; and Sam Lund-Harket, 32, were all arrested on charges of suspicion of aggravated trespass, being unlawfully airside and breaching London City Airport bylaws, BBC.com reports.
The London Metropolitan Police (Met) reported that the protesters had erected a tripod and locked themselves together on the runway after reportedly using a rubber dinghy or swimming across the River Thames to reach the airports single runway. Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the course of the six-hour protest. Flights resumed at approximately 12:00 p.m. the same afternoon.

Clinton aides claim Obama photo wasn't intended as a smearBarack Obama's campaign team today accused Hillary Clinton's beleaguered staff of mounting a desperate dirty tricks operation by circulating a picture of him in African dress, feeding into false claims on US websites that he is a Muslim.
Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, described it as "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election". Obama has had to spend much of the campaign stressing he is a Christian not a Muslim and did not study at a madrassa.
