Freedom unifies the soul': Trump's State of the Union speechwriters have thrown in the towel

The US reality-TV president has shown a stubborn resistance to playing the role of a normal commander-in-chief
Theres only one political body that is more incompetent than the Iowa Democratic party. That body was delivering what could be its last State of the Union speech on Tuesday.
For the fourth year, Donald Trump pretended to address Congress like his presidential predecessors, with some kind of legislative agenda worthy of the chief executive of the most powerful country on the planet.
But our reality-TV president has shown a stubborn resistance to playing anything like the normal role of a commander-in-chief. This time last year, he threatened war if Congress continued to investigate his many varied scandals, crimes and impeachable abuses.
If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation, he said in a nonsense rhyme that sounded like the vaguely ominous threats of a childish bully armed with nuclear weapons. It just doesnt work that way!

Biden's poor showing in Iowa shakes establishment support
Source: AP
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Joe Bidens third presidential bid enters a critical stretch after a disappointing finish in the Iowa caucuses sent the former vice president on to New Hampshire with a skittish donor base, low cash reserves and the looming threat of billionaire rival Michael Bloomberg and his unlimited personal wealth.
In New Hampshire on Tuesday, Biden insisted he had a good night in Iowa even as he trailed the top moderate candidate, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, and the leading progressive, Bernie Sanders, according to initial returns from 71% of precincts. Biden was running fourth, close to Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who just days ago polled in single digits.
That leaves some establishment Democrats, including some Biden supporters, questioning his contention that hell reclaim clear front-runner status in the race against President Donald Trump once the primary fight moves beyond overwhelmingly white Iowa and New Hampshire to more racially diverse electorates. And its a reminder of how Bidens previous presidential campaigns never advanced beyond Iowa.
If he came in fourth, yeah, that could hurt, said Bill Freeman, a Biden donor from Nashville, Tennessee, who added that he hadnt even considered such a possibility heading into Mondays caucuses. Thats a bad night, no matter how you spin it.

Alabama Democrat Doug Jones will vote to convict
Source: The Guardian
Alabama senator Doug Jones, one of the few Democrats who may have voted to acquit the president, just released a statement to say after many sleepless nights he has reluctantly decided to vote to convict on both articles of impeachment.
I did not run for Senate hoping to participate in the impeachment trial of a duly-elected President, but I cannot and will not shrink from my duty to defend the Constitution and to do impartial justice, Jones said in a lengthy statement.
Senators are elected to make tough choices. We are required to study the facts of each issue before us and exercise our independent judgement in keeping with the oaths we take. The gravity of this moment, the seriousness of the charges, and the implications for future presidencies and Congresses all contributed to the difficult with which I have arrive at my decision.
Meanwhile, another Democrat who could go either way, West Virginias Joe Manchin, has told reporters the public will learn how he is voting when it is time to vote.

Built in 10 days, China's virus hospital takes 1st patients
Source: AP
BEIJING (AP) The first patients arrived Monday at a 1,000-bed hospital built in 10 days as part of Chinas sweeping efforts to fight a new virus that is causing global alarm.
Huoshenshan Hospital and a second 1,500-bed facility due to open this week were built by construction crews who are working around the clock in Wuhan, the central city where the outbreak was first detected in December. Some 50 million people are barred from leaving Wuhan and surrounding cities.
The Wuhan treatment centers mark the second time Chinese leaders have responded to a new disease by building specialized hospitals almost overnight. As severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, spread in 2003, a facility in Beijing for patients with that viral disease was constructed in a week.
The first patients arrived at Huoshenshan Hospital at 10 a.m. on Monday, according to state media. They gave no details of the patients identities or conditions.

Release of major Iowa poll scrapped after Pete Buttigieg's name 'left off survey'
The Des Moines Register and CNN canceled the release of one of the most influential polls of the Democratic presidential primaries on Saturday night, after candidate Pete Buttigieg reportedly complained that his name had been left off at least one survey.
CNN had dedicated an hour-long show to the poll, which was to be released in conjunction with the Des Moines Register and Mediacom. The survey was withheld, minutes before it was due to be released, after Buttigiegs campaign contacted Selzer and Co, which conducted the poll.
The New York Times, citing a Buttigieg campaign aide, said a Buttigieg supporter was called by the pollster and asked their preferred presidential candidate. A list of candidates was read out but did not include Buttigiegs name.
The survey, the final Register poll before the caucus on Monday, has been called the most consequential poll in politics, given the timing of its release and the impact it can have over voters. The Register has published a poll just before the caucuses for 76 years. The poll has predicted the correct winner in 10 out of the past 12 presidential primary races.
