Multiple people injured in shooting outside Pennsylvania nightclub: authorities

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/449490-10-injured-in-shooting-outside-pennsylvania-nightclub

At least 10 people are injured after a shooting at an Allentown, Pennsylvania, nightclub early Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities said most of the victims had just left or were standing outside of the DejaVu nightclub when shots were fired near 2:00 a.m.

All the wounded are being treated at the hospital and expected to recover, according to AP.

No arrests were immediately made and the motive for the shooting was unclear.

Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), whose district the shooting occurred in, tweeted that she was "horrified."

"Horrified at the news of a shooting in Allentown overnight. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities. I’m keeping a close eye on the situation and praying for the victims in the hospital," Wild said.

The House passed the bipartisan background checks bill. Senator McConnell is blocking it.

Today, I’m delivering this letter to McConnell urging him to bring #HR8 or #S42 to a vote.

Speaking is hard for me, but I can’t be more clear: The Senate must pass #BackgroundChecksNow.

Accusing the New York Times of 'Treason,' Trump Crosses a Line

https://www.wsj.com/articles/accusing-the-new-york-times-of-treason-trump-crosses-a-line-11560985187?reflink=share_mobilewebshare

The Founders considered it the gravest of crimes. Tossing the charge around is irresponsible and wrong.

First it was “the failing New York Times.” Then “fake news.” Then “enemy of the people.” President Trump’s escalating attacks on the New York Times have paralleled his broader barrage on American media. He’s gone from misrepresenting our business, to assaulting our integrity, to demonizing our journalists with a phrase that’s been used by generations of demagogues.

Now the president has escalated his attacks even further, accusing the Times of a crime so grave it is punishable by death.

On Saturday, Mr. Trump said the Times had committed “a virtual act of treason.” The charge, levied on Twitter , was in response to an article about American cyber incursions into the Russian electrical grid that his own aides had assured our reporters raised no national-security concerns.

<snip>

There is no more serious charge a commander in chief can make against an independent news organization. Which presents a troubling question: What would it look like for Mr. Trump to escalate his attacks on the press further? Having already reached for the most incendiary language available, what is left but putting his threats into action?

There’s evidence that’s already happening. The administration has waged an aggressive legal campaign against journalists. Leak investigations, which were already on the rise under President Obama, have surged. Government regulatory powers have been misused to retaliate against news organizations, such as the attempt to block AT&T from acquiring CNN’s parent company, Time Warner. Most recently, the precedent-shattering use of the Espionage Act against Julian Assange for publishing classified information has raised fears that the Justice Department seeks not merely to punish illegal hacking but effectively to criminalize standard reporting practices.

Meanwhile, the president’s rhetorical attacks continue to foster a climate in which trust in journalists is eroding and violence against them is growing. More than a quarter of Americans—and a plurality of Republicans—now agree that “the news media is the enemy of the American people” and “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior.” A world-wide surge of attacks has made this the most dangerous year for journalists on record. This is particularly true in parts of the world where pursuing the truth already carries great risks, as news reporters and editors experience rising levels of censorship, harassment, imprisonment and murder.

Australia detective stops presser to tackle man who allegedly made inappropriate comments to teenage girl
A press conference from Australia police was cut short after a senior detective left to tackle a man running away behind him.

Senior Sgt. Daren Edwards was speaking outside of the Maroochydore Police Station on the Sunshine Coast when a man came sprinting toward him, News.com.au reports.

The 39-year-old man had allegedly made inappropriate comments to a 19-year-old girl, whose father was chasing after him.

A video showed Edwards speaking at the podium before stopping to turn around and see what’s going on behind him. He then runs after the man before grabbing him around the knees, forcing him to fall to the ground.

Christopher Dickey; Exposing Trump's Khashoggi Coverup (Warning; graphic description)

https://www.thedailybeast.com/khashoggi-coverup-exposing-trumps-efforts-to-defend-the-mastermind-behind-his-murder?ref=home

PARIS—There is no longer any question that the Saudi government was behind the savage murder of dissident journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi. A meticulous report from the United Nations on Wednesday made that absolutely clear, once again.

The details are grisly, transcribed from bugged conversations in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where Khashoggi was murdered and chopped up for disposal on Oct. 2.

Minutes before the journalist arrived to pick up papers for a civil marriage, Dr. Salah Mohammed Tubaigy, a forensic scientist with the Saudi interior ministry, is heard explaining to the head of the hit team how they’ll get rid of the heavy-set Khashoggi, referred to as “the sacrificial animal.”

“Joints will be separated. It is not a problem,” says the doctor. “If we take plastic bags and cut it into pieces, it will be finished. We will wrap each of them.”

<snip>

The 15-man hit team that killed Khashoggi was made up of members of the Saudi royal guard, intelligence services, and staff from the office of MBS and his closest adviser. So Trump did what he usually does when faced with inconvenient facts: He acted as if they were unknowable. He declared in November that “it could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event—maybe he did and maybe he didn’t.”

The CIA concluded with “medium to high confidence” that MBS “personally targeted” Khashoggi and “probably ordered his death,” according to excerpts of its findings reported in The Wall Street Journal. Trump took that to mean “they did not come to a conclusion” about MBS’ involvement, adding that “they have feelings certain ways, but they didn’t—I have the report.”

9/11 responder who testified with Jon Stewart moved to hospice care

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/449385-first-responder-who-testified-with-jon-stewart-moved-to-hospice-care

A 9/11 first responder who testified alongside comedian Jon Stewart during an emotional House Judiciary Committee hearing last week said he is now in hospice care.

Lou Alvarez wrote on Facebook that he was placed in hospice care a day after his trip to Capitol Hill, where he advocated for a bill to extend funding for 9/11 first responders.

"I’m now in hospice," Alvarez wrote, adding that there is "nothing else the doctors can do to fight the cancer. It had nothing to do with my trip to DC, that was just coincidence."

Alvarez said he was scheduled for chemo the day after his trip to Washington, D.C., and the nurse noticed he was "disoriented." He later found out his liver had stopped filtering out toxins because of his tumor and his body was filling up with ammonia, he said.

The retired NYPD detective said he is now resting and at peace and will continue to highlight the effort to secure 9/11 first responder benefits that "we all justly deserve."
