Turkish president Erdogan 'threw Trump's Syria letter in bin'

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan put US President Donald Trump's letter "in the bin", the BBC has been told.

In the letter dated 9 October, and sent after US troops were pulled out of Syria, Mr Trump told Mr Erdogan: "Don't be a tough guy. Don't be a fool!"

Turkish presidential sources told the BBC that the letter was "thoroughly rejected" by Mr Erdogan.

In response, Turkish presidential sources said: "President Erdogan received the letter, thoroughly rejected it and put it in the bin."

"Bin", meaning "trash" per several other sources.

ESPN Senior Writer

Junior middleweight Patrick Day, who suffered a 10th-round knockout loss on Saturday night, died from brain injuries on Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, promoter Lou DiBella said. Day was 27.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," DiBella said in a statement. "He was a son, brother, and good friend to many. Pat's kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met."

Day was knocked down by right hands in the fourth and eighth rounds by unbeaten Charles Conwell, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, during the scheduled 10-round fight on the Oleksandr Usyk-Chazz Witherspoon undercard at Wintrust Arena.

Although Conwell was clearly winning the fight, Day was competitive in many of the rounds. However, in the 10th round, Conwell landed two rights and a left hook that knocked out Day. When Day went down, the back of his head slammed onto the canvas, and referee Celestino Ruiz immediately stopped the bout without a count at 1 minute, 46 seconds.

This is an inexcusable @nytimes headline. To soften and normalize Trump’s behavior on this week of all weeks is something else.

Honestly it's hard to construct a better metaphor for the Trump administration than the fact that the United States is now bombing its own military bases.

A U.S. Justice Department inspector general investigation substantiated claims that the then-deputy assistant attorney general viewed sexually explicit images on government computers and that he made false statements to investigators. Kempf did not return messages seeking comment.

By C. Ryan Barber | October 16, 2019 at 06:16 PM

Donald Kempf Jr., a former senior lawyer in the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust division, stepped down last year during an internal investigation that would conclude he viewed sexually explicit images on government computers and made false statements when he was questioned about the conduct, according to sources familiar with the probe.

The son of the actor Ron Ely, who starred in the 1960s television series “Tarzan,” killed his mother on Tuesday in Santa Barbara, Calif., before being fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies when he threatened them, the authorities said Wednesday.

Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, died from stab wounds inside the home in Hope Ranch, a suburb of Santa Barbara, that she had shared with her husband, Mr. Ely, 81.

Sheriff’s deputies, who received a call at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday about a family disturbance at the home, found the body and identified the couple’s son, Cameron Ely, 30, as the suspect in the killing, the sheriff’s office said.

Amid impeachment probe, Gordon Sondland is overseeing a renovation of his residence that has cost $1 million in taxpayer money

By Michael Birnbaum, Shane Harris and John Hudson

Oct. 16, 2019 at 7:10 p.m. EDT

BRUSSELS — Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union and a central figure in the House impeachment inquiry of President Trump, is overseeing a nearly $1 million renovation of his government-provided residence, paid for with taxpayer money, that current and former officials have criticized as extravagant and unnecessary.

The work on the ambassador’s home on the outskirts of Brussels includes more than $400,000 in kitchen renovations, nearly $30,000 for a new sound system and $95,000 for an outdoor “living pod” with a pergola and electric heating, LED lighting strips and a remote-control system, government procurement records show.

The State Department also has allocated more than $100,000 for an “alternate” residence for Sondland for September and October, while work is performed.

Sondland, a hotel developer and major Trump fundraiser who had no diplomacy background before he was confirmed by the Senate in June 2018, was pivotal to the administration’s efforts to pressure the government of Ukraine to investigate Trump’s political rivals, according to text messages and testimony from current and former officials.

He is scheduled to be deposed by impeachment investigators on Thursday and plans to say that a text message he sent Sept. 9 to the senior U.S. diplomat in Kyiv denying any quid pro quo with Ukraine, which was desperate for U.S. military aid and diplomatic support, was relayed to him directly by Trump, according to a person familiar with his testimony.

The renovations at the E.U. ambassador’s residence, which include $33,000 for handmade furniture from Italy, appeared driven by Sondland’s lavish tastes rather than practical needs, people familiar with the matter said. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity citing the situation’s sensitivity and a desire to be candid with their insights.
