Workers install a fence in front of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday.

Updated at 3:24 p.m. ET

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy announced Thursday that a "7-foot non-scalable fence" is being erected around the entirety of the U.S. Capitol, and it will be in place for at least the next 30 days.

McCarthy also said 6,200 members of the National Guard will deploy to the National Capital region by this weekend. He made his remarks at a press briefing with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Acting Police Chief Robert Contee.

McCarthy said the entire D.C. National Guard has been mobilized and is being supplemented by Guard troops from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and New York.

In revisiting what she called the "failure" of security at the Capitol on Wednesday, Bowser said responsibility for the assault lies with President Trump, whom she described as "unhinged."

"What happened yesterday is what he wanted to happen and we must not underestimate the damage he can do to our nation and our democracy over the next two weeks," Bowser said.

The politically-connected son of a Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge was among the band of Trump-supporting marauders who ransacked the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday.

Dressed in fur pelts and a bullet proof vest, Aaron Mostofsky joined an early wave of rioters who swarmed the halls of Congress, forcing lawmakers to evacuate before certifying Joe Biden's election victory. He can be seen in several photos outside the Senate chambers, holding a wooden stick and a police riot shield, alongside a man carrying a Confederate flag.

The man's father is Schlomo Mostofsky, a prominent modern Orthodox figure in Brooklyn and former president of the National Council of Young Israel. He was elected to the Kings County Supreme Court last January with the backing of the Brooklyn Democratic Party.

Neither father nor son returned repeated inquiries from Gothamist. In an interview with the NY Post, Aaron, who declined to give his last name, said that he stormed the building because “the election was stolen," adding that he found the riot shield on the floor.

NYT: Trump Is Said to Have Discussed Pardoning Himself

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/07/us/politics/trump-self-pardon.html

The discussions occurred in recent weeks, and it was not clear whether he has brought it up since he incited a mob of supporters to attack the Capitol.

President Trump has suggested to aides he wants to pardon himself in the final days of his presidency, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions, a move that would mark one of the most extraordinary and untested uses of presidential power in American history.

In several conversations since Election Day, Mr. Trump has told advisers that he is considering giving himself a pardon and, in other instances, asked whether he should and what the impact would be on him legally and politically, according to the two people. It was not clear whether he has broached the topic since he incited his supporters on Wednesday to storm the Capitol in a mob attack.

Mr. Trump has shown signs that his level of interest in pardoning himself goes beyond idle musings. He has long maintained he has the power to pardon himself and his polling of aides’ views is typically a sign that he is preparing to follow through on his aims. He has also become increasingly convinced that his perceived enemies will use the levers of law enforcement to target him after he leaves office.

No president has pardoned himself, so the legitimacy of prospective self-clemency has never been tested in the justice system and legal scholars are divided about whether the courts would recognize it. But they agree a presidential self-pardon could create a dangerous new precedent for presidents to unilaterally declare they are above the law and to insulate themselves from being held accountable for any crimes they committed in office.

A GOP source in frequent contact with Trump tells @Acosta that the prez is "out of his mind." The source depicts Trump as so traumatized by his 11/3 loss that he's lost his grip on reality. "The source worries Trump's behavior will only worsen during his last 2 weeks in office."

The U.S. Capitol was breached today for the first time since 1814, when the British attacked it and set it on fire during the war of 1812, according to the director of scholarship and operations with the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. How shameful.
