RandySF's JournalSanders Can’t Escape Questions About 2007 Vote on Immigration Overhaul
But Mr. Sanders could face continuing questions about his vote against a comprehensive immigration overhaul bill in 2007, as he did during the first Democratic presidential debate last week. And while he has recently presented that vote in humanitarian terms, his language at the time was starkly economic about guest-worker visas, which were viewed skeptically by organized labor.
Why should Latino voters trust you now when you left them at the altar at the moment when reform was very close? Juan Carlos López, a panelist and an anchor on CNN en Español asked in the debate last week about the senators vote against that bill.
I didnt leave anybody at the altar, Mr. Sanders replied. I voted against that piece of legislation because it had guest-worker provisions in it, which the Southern Poverty Law Center talked about being semi-slavery. Guest workers are coming in, theyre working under terrible conditions, but if they stand up for their rights, theyre thrown out of the country. I was not the only progressive to vote against that legislation for that reason. Tom Harkin, a very good friend of Hillary Clintons and mine, one of the leading labor advocates, also voted against that.
He added, Progressives did vote against that for that reason. My view right now and always has been is that when you have 11 million undocumented people in this country, we need comprehensive immigration reform, we need a path toward citizenship, we need to take people out of the shadows.
But Mr. Sanders was part of an effort by liberal Democrats to kill the bill that year. His language at the time often related not to the concerns of the workers receiving the visas, but to the bills impact on American wage-earners. And those words are at odds with how much of the Democratic Party currently discusses immigration overhaul, all but guaranteeing he will continue to be asked to clarify his views.

Guardians of the Galaxy sequel casts Pom Klementieff as Mantis
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has added a new member to the team of galactic heroes, casting French actress Pom Klementieff, best known in the U.S. for her role in Spike Lees remake of Oldboy. Klementieffs role is being kept under wraps for now, but were told shell be playing the superhero Mantis. Introduced on the pages of Avengers #112 in 1973 and created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck, Mantis is the half-Vietnamese, half-German daughter of the antihero Libra, and a martial arts expert with psychic abilities and ties to the alien Kree race. Since 2007 the character has appeared as an uneasy member of the Guardians as a kind of ships counselor and has played a key role in recent storylines involving the team, most notably in the Secret Invasion crossover. The character is also tied closely to Thanos, played by Josh Brolin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel conducted a wide search for an actress of Asian descent, leading to much speculation that Mantis would appear in Guardians 2. Stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are returning along with writer-director James Gunn. Klementieff is repped by Untitled Entertainment.

Hillary Clinton Blowing Out Democrats in New Florida Poll
Former U.S. Sec. of State Hillary Clinton is out front with Florida Democrats while businessman Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., are ahead on the Republican side, a new poll shows.
St. Leo University released a poll on Wednesday showing Clinton with a commanding lead in the Sunshine State. A majority of Florida Democrats--51 percent--support Clinton. The poll was started before Vice President Joe Biden closed the door on running for the Democratic nomination and he places a distant second with 15 percent. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., garners 13 percent.

SF: Please vote YES on Prop. F!!!!
WHY WE NEED PROP F
Thousands evicted. Thousands of tenants have been forced out or evicted so apartments can be converted into illegal AirBnB hotels.
Making the housing crisis worse. Over 70% of the 10,000 short-term rentals in San Francisco are entire units, not shares. This eliminates affordable housing and makes our housing crisis even worse.
Weak law. Only 600 of 10,000 short-term rentals -- less than 10% -- are registered with the city as required by law.
Parades of strangers. Neighborhoods and apartment buildings are being overrun with illegal short-term rentals and unruly visitors.
No approval required. Right now anyone -- even in-law apartment renters -- can put their space on Airbnb without a property owner's approval.
WHAT PROP F DOES
Stops illegal conversion of affordable rental units into tourist hotels.
Prohibits illegal rentals from being advertised on website platforms like AirBnB.
Enables enforcement of hosting limits by requiring hosts to submit regular reports.
Requires a property owner's approval before an apartment is offered to short-term tourists.
Strengthens corporate accountability by allowing neighbors to sue website hosting corporation for failing to follow the law.
Sets fair, reasonable rules for hosts who want to rent out an extra room to make ends meet

Yes, Tuesday is Election Day. What local races are you watching?
There is a special election for Supervisor (to complete an unfinished term) between the mayor's [puppet, Julie Christensen and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce's puppet Aaron Peskin (yes, you read this name correctly). I'm voting for Peskin to protect the rights of renter and to get SFPD off their asses and do something about the increase in vandalism and car thefts in our neighborhood. The other battle being waged citywide is Proposition F and I ask any San Franciscan on tis board to vote YES. Prop. F will curb the unmitigated disaster that is AirBnB, which has turned our apartment buildings into hotels.
Hillary ahead by 34% in Pennsylvania
The clock on Obama's presidency is, of course, winding down. The poll found that 52 percent of registered Democratic voters preferred former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to be their presidential nominee. Only 18 percent favored her closest rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

High school principal body-slammed while breaking up fight.
Three Florin High School students were taken to juvenile hall after a wild fight in which the schools principal was body-slammed.
The chaotic scene played out during lunchtime Monday on the south-area campus.
A fight broke out, drawing a school resource police officer, a school official and Principal Don Ross. Students gathered around, at least one recording the melee on a cellphone, as officials tried to break up the fight.
After trying to restrain a tall student, Ross was thrown to the floor. Undeterred, Ross got back up and tried to prevent the student from fighting again.
The fight, including the efforts of Ross, who officials said was not badly hurt during the altercation, was posted on YouTube.
Sacramento County sheriffs spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull said that two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old were arrested. Two were charged with suspicion of battery on school staff causing injury and the third was arrested for making threats toward other students and law enforcement.

My take on why Jeb failed and George succeeded
I still believe that, no matter how a presidential candidate he was, Jeb Bush is still the smart one. His academic background and notorious command of detail as Florida governor still attest to that fact. But those supposed stregnths were also his greatest weaknesses. He was always "the one" who was supposed to go into politics. He was supposed to be elected governor in 1994 while his oder brother was originally expected to lose to Anne Richards in Texas. But George had something Jeb did not: A ferocious drive to prove his parents wrong about him. And he was ready to shake every hand, tell an lie, pull any dirty trick and break any law to win. What's more, he had his friend The Bottle every step of the way to give him that winning personality. Jeb thought it would be easy, George knew it would not. And the end of the day, the race goes to the one who WANTS it the most.
GOP Debate: Focus Groups And Instant Polls Won't Tell You Who 'Won' The Debate
A focus group led by GOP pollster Frank Luntz after the first Republican debate in August suggested that voters had soured on Donald Trump -- a prediction not borne out in the business mogul's poll numbers, which continued to rise sharply.
Initial reactions to the first Democratic debate also proved to be dissimilar from the results of later polling on the race. Another Luntz focus group named Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) the clear winner, and suggested many of Clinton's supporters had deserted her. Other focus groups and instant online polls told a similar story, as did a surge of web searches and Facebook follows for Sanders. Days later, though, scientific surveys showed a more quotidian outcome: While both candidates made a good impression, the debate, if anything, strengthened Clinton's lead.
Its possible for both of those reactions to be true, to some extent: Media coverage, which was largely favorable to Clinton, is at least as important as the candidate's actual performance in guiding opinion. Respondents opinions on later polls are likely influenced by the medias dominant narrative, especially if the poll includes people who didnt watch the entire debate.
But there are plenty of other reasons to be skeptical of most of the attempts to instantly gauge reaction after a debate.
Online "instant polls," which don't attempt to weight their responses and may allow people to vote multiple times, often end up rewarding enthusiasm over numbers, reflecting the views of a small group of supporters rather than the nation's debate-watchers as a whole.

Bernie should think twice about going negative against Hillary.
Bernie Sanders, with all due respect, has been a Democrat for all of three or four months. He has no history with the party on the national or state level or any activists outside of Vermont. So what happened when a guy with relatively low name recognition makes himself know nationally by going on the attack against a popular figure? He's going to be known as the grumpy old man from Vermont who waltzed into a party he never belonged to and started a fight. Not a good idea.
