LA could vote on mandatory condom use in adult films

A ballot initiative that would require condoms in all adult films shot in the city of Los Angeles has enough signatures to get on the June ballot. But there’s a legal challenge coming from the city’s attorney before LA residents can vote on the matter.

The proposed law called the “Safer Sex In The Adult Film Industry Act” would require “any person or entity directly engaged in the creation of adult films who is issued a permit” to “maintain engineering and work practice controls, including the provision of and required use of condoms, sufficient to protect employees from exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials consistent with state law.”

It would also charge adult film production companies a fee to pay for the periodic inspections.

Although state law already exists requiring condom use, a city ordinance would give additional enforcement, proponents of the proposed law say.

I was reminded last night why we need to win in 2012.

Last night, I watched the movie 'Fair Game', about the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame by the White House. I got angry because I was reminded about the run-up to the war in Iraq. And I got angrier still when I thought about the 2000 Florida recount. Three years of the Obama Administration did not sooth my anger over the greatest election and foreign policy frauds in American history. I was also reminded by what the Bush family mafia were willing to do to anyone who gets in their way. Now, they sit and wait in their offices at the Heritage Foundation, the Weekly Standard and the American Enterprise Institute to return to the White House and Cabinet offices. And they already beat the drums for war with Iran. I'm sorry. I know people are disappointed with the Obama's shortcomings, but I have too long a memory to hand over the keys to the Republicans. Elections DO matter.

Gingrich: Campaign worker's signature fraud cost slot on Virginia ballot

Algona, Iowa (CNN) - Newt Gingrich cited fraud Wednesday as the reason he didn't get on the Virginia primary ballot.

Last week his campaign acknowledged they used paid volunteers to scramble to get the required 10,000 signatures but fell short after the former House speaker and Virginia resident boasted his campaign was submitting as many as 12,000-14,000 signatures.

On a campaign stop at an Algona chocolate store, the former House speaker said the "mistake" occurred because one of their workers committed fraud.

"We hired somebody who turned in false signatures. We turned in 11,100 – we needed 10,000 – 1,500 of them were by one guy who frankly committed fraud."

Just as Rachel predicted: Santorum surges in Iowa.

With less than a week to go until Republicans cast the first votes of the 2012 presidential race in Iowa, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Texas congressman Ron Paul remain atop the field there, even as the fortunes of their closest competitors are quickly changing, according to a new CNN/TIME/ORC poll released Wednesday.

Romney now leads the pack with support from 25% of likely Iowa caucus-goers, while Paul boasts 22%, both posting a five-point gain since early December. While Romney’s lead in Iowa is tenuous, his continued strength across the board raises the possibility that the establishment front-runner could win his party’s nomination in a clean sweep.

Bolstering that possibility is the collapse of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who led in Iowa with 33% less than a month ago, but has seen his front-runner status disintegrate under a torrent of negative advertising and now claims just 14% support. Some of his voters have scattered, providing small bumps to Romney and Paul as well as Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Governor Rick Perry. But the biggest beneficiary of Gingrich’s collapse appears to be former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, who’s rocketed into third place with 16%, a dramatic 11-point climb in three short weeks. Santorum now leads among born-again Christians, and is tied with Paul and Romney among self-described conservatives and Tea Party supporters. The surge by Santorum, who’s quietly made stops in each of Iowa’s 99 counties and won the endorsement of some of the state’s top evangelical leaders, only adds suspense to next week’s caucuses, the outcome of which remains incredibly unpredictable.

It’s Kucinich Vs. Kaptur In Ohio Congressional Race

Dennis Kucinich, the left-wing Democratic Congressman from Ohio, and two-time candidate for president, has announced that he will run against fellow incumbent Democrat Marcy Kaptur after they were drawn into a new district — setting up the biggest challenge of Kucinich’s political career since his brief and tumultuous term as Mayor of Cleveland in the 1970’s.

Kucinich announced on Twitter Wednesday that he has filed to run in the 9th District, which will pit him against Kaptur, who has already been gearing up for the race.

The two were drawn into a gerrymandered district that stretches from east to west around Lake Erie, all the way from the Democratic stronghold of Cleveland (Kucinich’s base) to the Democratic stronghold of Toledo (Kaptur territory). And for what it is worth, the new district does in fact contain a bit more of Kaptur’s territory, than it does from Kucinich.

I miss Swing State Project

I REALLY miss the old Democratic blog Swing State Project. It was a great site to visit for election news from the White House to state legislative elections all the way down to municipal races. it was especially useful for special elections. I know the writers now work day Dkos Elections, but now I have to visit Daily Kos and wade through the site to find what I am looking for. *sigh* Maybe one day they will return.

WI man cited with tearing Walker recall signs

Western Wisconsin volunteers collecting signatures for the effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker have allegedly again been met by aggressive opponents.

On Monday, a group of volunteers in Hudson said they were approached by a man who knocked over and tore their signs before urging a member of the group to "take a swing" at him, according to a police report.

Hudson police cited Donald Rindo, 51, of Hudson with disorderly conduct and destruction of property.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Rindo declined to elaborate on the accusations.

"I'm terribly upset that they would smear my name like that," he said. "I'm not going to smear their name and say anything about what they did or did not do."

Gingrich lied about first divorce.

Carrollton, Georgia (CNN) -- Newt Gingrich claims that it was his first wife, not Gingrich himself, who wanted their divorce in 1980, but court documents obtained by CNN appear to show otherwise.

The Republican presidential candidate, now in his third marriage, has been peppered with attacks and questions about his divorce from Jackie Gingrich for the past three decades.

Questions about his past -- and what that past tells voters about his personal behavior -- have re-emerged as he has returned to the political scene 13 years after he resigned as speaker of the House.

Romney tried to block life-saving abortion for mother of four: "Why do you get off easy?"

The woman was told by doctors that treatment of the clot would threaten the pregnancy, and so an abortion was necessary. The Mormon faith officially opposes abortion except in extreme cases, and women who are members of the church and seek an abortion are required to petition church elders for permission. She and her husband petitioned the Church to authorize them to receive the procedure, and a church elder told her and her husband that the procedure looked like unfortunate but unavoidable.

On the day of the abortion, the couple showed up at the hospital only to be greeted by their bishop, who had shown up, unannounced, to try to prevent her from going through with it, regardless of the fact that a church official with a higher rank than his had already given the okay. The bishop was determined to make his case against the life-saving surgery, and he was a total dick about it. According to a 2007 interview with Dushku, the following exchange occurred,

He said – What do you think you're doing?

She said – Well, we have to abort the baby because I have these blood clots.

And he said something to the effect of – Well, why do you get off easy when other women have their babies?

And she said – What are you talking about? This is a life threatening situation.

And he said – Well what about the life of the baby?

And she said – I have four other children and I think it would be really irresponsible to continue the pregnancy.

The bishop who tried to block that selfish, selfish clotted up woman from saving her own life with a legal medical procedure was one Mitt Romney. The woman he attempted to block did go through with her abortion and lived to see her four teenage children grow up. Her family later left the church.
