Voting rights groups alarmed after Cobb County reduced early-voting sites for Ga. Senate runoffs

A decision by elections officials in Georgia’s third-largest county to drastically reduce the number of early-voting sites for the crucial U.S. Senate runoffs has drawn the ire of several civil rights and voting rights groups.

Cobb County, which borders Atlanta on the west, will offer five polling sites when early voting begins Dec. 14. For the Nov. 3 general election, it had 11 locations to serve the county’s more than 537,000 voters.

Advocates warned in a letter Monday that the closures “will be harmful to Cobb County’s Black and Latinx voters” because many of the shuttered polling sites are located in minority neighborhoods. The next closest sites are between five and 12 miles away, and public transportation options in that area of the county are inadequate, the letter stated.

“We urge you to maintain eleven advance voting locations for the upcoming runoff election,” read the letter, signed by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and five advocacy groups.

Alito Sparks Worry Supreme Court Could Intervene

“As states prepare to lock-in their Electoral College delegates by Tuesday night’s ‘safe harbor’ deadline, Justice Samuel Alito is feeding speculation that the U.S. Supreme Court could upend the 2020 election results in an eleventh-hour intervention,” ABC News reports.

“Alito sparked intrigue Sunday morning when he quietly moved up a key filing deadline — from Wednesday to Tuesday — in an emergency appeal brought by allies of President Trump in Pennsylvania. The change effectively keeps open the possibility of court action before the state’s delegates are set in stone.”

To lead CDC, Biden picks Rochelle Walensky

President-elect Joe Biden has selected Rochelle Walensky, the chief of infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, to run the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to two people familiar with the decision.

Walensky, who is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, will be tasked with rebuilding a critical health agency that has been sidelined by the Trump administration amid a pandemic.

Walensky will replace Robert Redfield, who assumed the role of director in March 2018, and take a top role in helping the Biden administration curtail the coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, the CDC recommended for the first time that people wear masks at all times when they’re not home. That guidance echoes Biden’s call for a nationwide mask mandate, which numerous Republican governors have rejected.
