Kamala Harris advances in U.S. Senate race, Loretta Sanchez in second.

Kamala Harris easily clinched a spot in the fall runoff on Tuesday to succeed U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, but the contest for second place was too close to call between fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez and Republican Duf Sundheim.

A Nov. 8 showdown between Harris, a second-term attorney general, and one of the lesser-known GOP candidates would be a boon for the Democratic Party, which overwhelmingly endorsed Harris earlier this year in an effort to avert an expensive and potentially personal feud between two of its own.

But several factors, including competition in the Democratic presidential race and a lack of unification around a Republican candidate bolstered Sanchez, a veteran congresswoman from Orange County.

“It’s been an exciting campaign, and we’re getting ready for Round 2,” Sanchez told supporters as returns continued to come in.

Hillary rolling up huge numbers in LA

I'm calling California for Hillary.

Anything can happen, but I don't think there's going to be enough of an election day margin to make up the big lead that Hillary's built up in the early voting.

Hillary up 62% to 37% in San Francisco early voting.

Hillary up 74% to 24% in Imperial County. Bernie up only 3% in Lassen County

Nate Cohn: One million votes in. Bernie will need to win remaining votes by at least 8% to win CA.

Clinton up 66%-33% in LA County, 69%-31% San Mateo County

Early voting, of course.

The early vote was expected to be good for Clinton--but there weren't many polls showing Clinton ahead by this sort of margin in the EV.
