RandySF's JournalSingle mom arrested for ‘abandoning’ her kids at food court while interviewing for job 30 feet away
A single mother was placed under arrest by Houston police and later released after being accused of abandoning her children at a mall food court while she interviewed for a job just 30 feet away, reports KHOU.
Laura Browder said she took her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son with her to a mall for a suddenly scheduled job interview because she didnt have enough time to line up child care. According to Browder, she bought the children lunch at the McDonalds in the food court and sat them at a table approximately 30 feet away and well within sight while she interviewed.
Browder was taken into custody by police when she went to claim her kids, after someone at the mall called police saying the children had been left there crying.
Browder said she was arrested after accepting the job offer, but now worries if the arrest may cause her to lose it.

Texas trooper who arrested Sandra Bland violated police policies: investigators
A Texas trooper violated protocol during a traffic stop of a woman who was jailed and days later found dead in her cell in what a local sheriffs department said was an apparent suicide, officials said.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said on Friday the trooper has been put on desk duty while the FBI and the Texas Rangers, a statewide police and investigation agency, probe the death of Sandra Bland, 28, an African-American.
Relatives and friends of Bland, who was found hanged in her Waller County jail cell on Monday, said they do not believe the official version given by the Waller County Sheriffs Office.
Bland, from the Chicago suburb of Naperville, was arrested on July 10 for allegedly assaulting an officer during a traffic stop in Prairie View, northwest of Houston.

Trump mocks McCain’s military service: ‘I like people who weren’t captured’
GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday made fun of Sen. John McCains (R-Ariz.) military service during a question-and-answer session at the the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa.
The New York business mogul taunted McCains six years as a prisoner during the Vietnam War.
He was a war hero because he was captured, Trump sarcastically told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit. I like people who werent captured.
The quip came after Luntz challenged Trump over his criticism of McCains political career.

Florida church sends $1,000 collection notice to single mother because she didn’t tithe
Florida church sent a delinquency notice to a new member reminding her that worshipers were expected to pay $1,000 in required fees or face possible removal.
Candace Petterson said she started attending the Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church about six months ago after moving to a new home in the Tampa area, but she received a troubling letter last week from the church, reported WFTS-TV.
he single mother said she received what amounted to a delinquency notice from her new church asking her to contribute $50 a month, along with other assorted fees, to remain a member in good standing and vote on church matters.
The predominantly black church, which has operated for more than a century, asked her to pay a yearly $250 anniversary fee and another $150 for Mount Moriah Day amounting to $1,000, some of which would be set aside to pay off church debt.
What church charges you to help pay off what theyre going through? Petterson said. Im not there for that.

Hillary Clinton endorses fight for a $15 minimum wage (From June)
DETROIT, Mich. -- In one of the most explicitly union-friendly speeches of her young presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton called in to a convention of low-wage workers Sunday morning to deliver a message of support and solidarity.
"All of you should not have to march in the streets to get a living wage, but thank you for marching in the streets to get that living wage," she said. "We need you out there leading the fight against those who would rip away Americans right to organize, to collective bargaining, to fair pay."
Clinton's new campaign has carried a populist tone throughout, but this speech -- before a ballroom full of mostly young, African American workers from across the country -- virtually echoed the language that the Service Employees International Union has used in its campaign for a $15 minimum wage. Along with the fast food workers who have been at the core of scattered protests over the past couple of years, Clinton's short speech called out home care workers and adjunct professors, who make up a substantial part of the SEIU's membership base and have joined in the call for higher wages.
"No man or woman who works hard to feed Americas families should have to be on food stamps to feed your own families," Clinton said. "It is wrong that so many people stand against you thinking that they can steal your wages with no consequences. That even stacks the deck higher for those at the top."

GOP Lawmaker: KKK Grand Wizard Was 'One Of The South’s First Civil Rights Leaders'
Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, was "one of the South's first civil rights leaders," a GOP state representative from Tennessee wrote in an op-ed published Thursday.
Tennessee State Rep. Andy Holt (R) said lawmakers were trying to "stoke the fires of racial tension in America" with claims against Forrest and by removing his remains from a Memphis park, according to his op-ed in The Jackson Sun, a newspaper in Jackson, Tenn.
Holt cited a speech he said Forrest gave in 1875 at a Fourth of July barbecue for an early civil right organization in Memphis.

'Darth Vader' Leads Funeral Service For Halloween-Loving Grandma
A Halloween-loving grandma was laid to rest in an unconventional funeral service Wednesday in England. Lorna Johnson, 56, died after an eight-month battle with lung cancer and her family wanted to make sure she was given an unforgettable farewell.
The self-proclaimed "white witch" loved all things Halloween and science fiction, her son Neil Johnson told Luton Today. The family, including four of Lorna's children and 10 grandchildren, decided the only way to give her a proper sendoff was to incorporate her penchant for costumes.
As a result, several witches, the Tasmanian devil, and Beetlejuice all attended the funeral -- which was led by none other than "Darth Vader."
They also played music to keep the mood upbeat, including songs by Dolly Parton.
While it may seem unusual, Neil says it's what his mother would have wanted. My mums always said you need to celebrate, you need to have a party," he told The Guardian. "So were not going to sit around feeling sorry for ourselves. My mum wouldnt want that. She would have been well up for it, its the type of person she was. She always wanted a party.
May the force be with you, Lorna.

Angela Merkel says gay couples should not call their unions ‘marriage’
German chancellor Angela Merkel, has said that while she agrees same-sex couples should get marital benefits, she does not believe a civil partnership should be called marriage.
Merkel, who earlier this year ruled out same-sex marriage in Germany, has now said legally she supports it but that she would want it to be called something else.
The chancellor answered questions in an online community from German YouTube star Florian Mundt, known as LeFloid on the website, as part of the Gut Leben [good living] campaign.
Im someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all discrimination. She said when asked for her stance on marriage equality.
We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago, many people didnt dare to say that they are gay or lesbian. Luckily we overcame this; you can enter a partnership, a civil partnership. Merkel said.
For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together. That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships. She continued. I support us not discriminating against them when it comes to taxes, and to remove any other discrimination wherever we may find it.
