Supreme Court Steps In To Keep Ex-Guv McDonnell Out Of Prison For Now

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell may stay out of prison for now, while prosecutors respond to his request to remain free until his appeal is heard.

Prosecutors have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to file a response to his request to remain free. Legal experts say Monday's ruling does not mean the Supreme Court will hear his appeal on his corruption conviction.

The U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected his request to stay out of prison on Thursday.

McDonnell was convicted by a jury in September 2014 in a political scandal where he gave favors to former Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for more than $165,000 in gifts and loans.

The Supreme Court is the last chance for McDonnell to stay free. He has remained free while his latest appeal move was decided. The former Republican governor was once widely considered a possible running mate to former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Jeb Clarifies 'Anchor Baby' Remarks: 'It's More Related To Asian People'

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush attempted to clarify his remarks about "anchor babies" during a stop near the U.S. border with Mexico on Monday, saying Asian immigrants are really more of the problem.

When asked if he thought his repeated use of the term "anchor babies" – a derogatory term for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrant parents – Bush said: "What I was talking about was the specific case of fraud being committed where there's organized efforts, and frankly, it's more related to Asian people coming into our country and having children in that organized effort."

Bush prefaced his answer with "as I said in Spanish," and went on to rail against political correctness, saying "we need to chill out."

Tomorrow is the first day of school.

Fourth grade? Where does the time go? Anyway, we are busy getting ready for our son's first day of school. School supplies: Check. Clothes: Check. Everything is ready. I'm personally excited and nervous at the same time. Excited that he is getting back into his routine and back together with friend he did not see over the summer. But I am also nervous as I wonder about his new teacher and whether he masters the new material. One thing is for sure, though. It never gets old.

Jeb Bush Says He Doesn't Regret Using The Term 'Anchor Babies'

Jeb Bush said Thursday he doesn't regret using the term "anchor babies" to describe children born in the United States to undocumented parents.

While taking questions from the press after a town hall in New Hampshire, the former Florida governor and GOP presidential hopeful was asked if he regretted using the term during a radio interview earlier this week.

"I don't," he said. "Do you have a better term? ... You give me a better term and I'll use it."

"Is that not bombastic?" a reporter asked.

"No, it isn't," he said. "Give me another word."

"What I said was it's commonly referred to [as] that," Bush continued. "I didn't use it as my own language. What we ought to do is -- do you want to get to the policy for a second? I think that people born in the country ought to be American citizens. Okay? Now we got that over with."

The Central Valley is sinking. Yes, the CENTRAL Valley

The floor of the Central Valley is sinking at a record pace as drought-gripped farmers pump out the groundwater beneath them, new satellite data show.

In some places the ground is dropping nearly 2 inches a month, according to measurements taken by the state and NASA. The sinking soil is dragging roads, bridges and other infrastructure with it, raising concern that state pumping restrictions scheduled to take effect in five years won’t arrive in time to head off costly damage and environmental ruin.

“I’m a fan of the new groundwater law. It’s long overdue,” said Peter Gleick, president of the Pacific Institute, a water research organization in Oakland. “But the overdraft of groundwater has to be brought under control faster than the regulation requires or we’re going to suffer billions of dollars worth of damages.”

Dried-up aquifers in parts of the state have already left some farms and communities without a water supply, Gleick noted. Sinking land is just the latest problem.

Yvonne Craig who, as Batgirl, was a pioneer of female superheroes passes away

(CNN)Before Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman, before Joanna Cameron's Isis, before Scarlett Johannsson's Black Widow, Yvonne Craig was a pioneer of female superheroes on screen.

As an actress, she originated the role of Batgirl in the 1960s "Batman" television series. As a trained dancer, she did her own stunts.

Craig died this week after a long two-year battle with breast cancer. She was 78.

The cancer metastasized to her liver, and she died Monday in her home in Pacific Palisades.

Could expulsion hearings be next for embattled Michigan state reps?

LANSING, Mich. — It’s a rare occurrence that’s happened just twice before in the history of the Michigan legislature, but some Lansing insiders seem poised to think an expulsion hearing could very well be the next step for embattled conservative state representatives Todd Courser, R-Lapeer, and Cindy Gamrat, R-Plainwell.

Since news broke Friday of the two lawmakers’ alleged extramarital affair and the outrageous attempt to try to cover it up, Courser has stated publicly he refuses to step down despite several calls for both he and Gamrat to resign their positions in the state House.

Gamrat has yet to speak publicly about the situation.

The freshman lawmakers and tea party conservative favorites are also being investigated by the House Business Office to determine whether they used taxpayer money and resources in their effort to cover up the alleged affair.
