GOP candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner faces fraud charges.

The Republican candidate running to join the Texas oil and gas regulatory agency has run afoul of state environmental rules and is embroiled in a series of lawsuits accusing him of fraud in the oil patch.

Jim Wright, owner of an oilfield waste services company, says he has done nothing wrong and that he’s the victim of a Democratic Party smear job.

If nothing else, South Texas court filings and public records showing more than $180,000 in state fines levied against Wright point to the fractiousness of the oilfield.

Wright, who lives on a ranch outside Orange Grove, 35 miles northwest of Corpus Christi, faces Democrat Chrysta Castañeda, a Dallas oil and gas attorney and engineer, in November for a spot on the three-member Texas Railroad Commission.

At the center of the disputes is DeWitt Recyclable Products, a company Wright started nearly a decade ago near Cuero to take oily muds and other drilling site byproducts and recycle them into crude oil, diesel fuel and cleaned-up dirt.

Wright sold the company in 2014 to out-of-state investors for more than $1 million, but he remained listed as president, according to court filings.

The Railroad Commission sent the facility a cease-and-desist letter and canceled permits in January 2017 after an inspector found waste stockpiled directly on the ground, waste material storage tanks leaking material into the soil and unpermitted stormwater ponds collecting around the machinery and the facility.

South Carolina State Senate Elections: Democrats Eye Multiple Districts

South Carolina Democrats are eyeing five Republican-held districts in this fall’s elections for the Palmetto State Senate – but they must also defend at least three potentially vulnerable seats. Meanwhile, a pair of entrenched Democratic incumbents occupying GOP districts near the capital city of Columbia, S.C. have drawn challengers – although it is not yet clear whether either candidate is in any real danger of losing their long-held office.

In addition to these races, of course, is the high-profile battle some Republicans hope to wage in an effort to take out S.C. senator Dick Harpootlian. An outspoken maverick, Harpootlian has drawn significant independent and GOP crossover support owing to his principled stands against crony capitalism and secretive spending within the state’s $30 billion annual budget.

As of this writing, Republicans control 27 of 46 seats in the chamber – well, to the extent you can call them “Republicans.” Can Democrats eat into that majority this fall? Or will the cycle wind up being a wash?

Democrats are pinning their hopes on multiple Senate districts in the Lowcountry region of the state – specifically a handful of swing districts in and around Charleston, South Carolina. This is the corner of the state where first-term congressman Joe Cunningham shocked the Palmetto political establishment with his upset victory last fall in a district that had been held by the GOP for nearly forty years.

Democrats picked up a pair of S.C. House seats in the Charleston area in 2018, and just this week they flipped a third seat with the emphatic victory of Folly Beach administrator Spencer Wetmore in a special election for S.C. House District 115 (.pdf). That seat had been held for the past decade by new U.S. attorney Peter McCoy, a Republican.

Philadelphia Eagles' Jeffrey Lurie offers Lincoln Financial Field as polling place in 2020 election

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Sunday he offered Lincoln Financial Field as a polling place for the 2020 general election.

There are concerns about crowded polling places during the coronavirus pandemic, and large stadiums and arenas make for alternatives that allow for voters and workers to spread out.

The NBA announced it would turn its arenas into polling places in November as part of an agreement with the NBA Players Association.

Lurie said he wants to do the same in South Philly during a lengthy opening statement to begin a Zoom call with reports Sunday afternoon. Lurie also expressed his desire to raise turnout numbers for the Nov. 3 election at all levels of the ballot, especially in the presidential race between Republican incumbent Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden.


“I don’t think there’s ever been a time when we all realized the importance of voting,” Lurie said. “And voting has ramifications, everybody, as we know, and maybe it’s taken some of us too long, myself included, to realize that, from lower down on the ballot to the highest levels, and we have a very important election coming up on Nov. 3, and one of the things we’ve offered to do is to open up Lincoln Financial Field to be a polling place, if needed. We’re also going to close our offices that day. We’ve encouraged our staff to be volunteers in the pre-polling in terms of registration. Any help we can be to maximize people’s ease of voting, no matter how they’re going to vote, we want to see that happen. Too few people that are even registered to vote, I think it’s like 60%, even vote in this country, and we’re dealing with some really important issues, and I think there’s a chance to really make a difference when it comes to that, and Philadelphia and Pennsylvania are obviously at the epicenter of potential outcomes in the election, so I encourage everybody, and the Eagles will be 1,000% supportive of that effort.”

Oakland A's plan to convert stadium into voting center

The Golden State Warriors may not be in the Orlando bubble, and the Oakland Athletics aren’t even in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t in solidarity with the players and their stance for social justice, equality, and political accessibility.

After striking for three days, the players in the bubble and around the NBA came together to discuss what they could do to help make their voices be heard and move the needle forward on some of the things that they want to see change.

This is the first time in the modern sports era that players have gone on strike. Because of this, and because of the serious issues that the players are trying to shed light on, much of the sports world followed suit.

We saw strikes from all over the American sports leagues. From the MLB to the NHL, and even to Tennis star Naomi Osaka.

After a few days of breathing room, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced in a joint statement with the NBA, that competition will resume on Saturday, August 29th, with three initiatives now in place.
