PA Rep: Don't Call My Witness A White Supremacist, He's A White Nationalist!

A Pennsylvania lawmaker objected to accusations that he had invited a white supremacist to testify in front of a committee by clarifying that the witness was merely a white nationalist.

The witness, Robert "Bob" Vandervoort, appeared at a hearing Monday on a bill to make English the official state language, the Patriot-News reported, prompting state Rep. Leslie Acosta (D) to allege that the committee had invited a white supremacist.

Without mentioning Vandervoort's name, the committee chair Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R) defended the invitation and rebutted the Democrat's claims.

"The comments that she made about some alleged white supremacist being in our meeting was outrageous," Metcalfe said Thursday, according to the Patriot News. "It was an email put out alleging that somebody was a white nationalist, which is quite a bit different from a white supremacist. To say somebody is a nationalist and for the independence of their country and a patriot to defending their country, is a lot different from saying somebody is a racist."

The Southern Poverty Law Center has described Vandervoort as being tied "to white nationalist groups." But, as the Patriot-News noted, the center characterizes white nationalist groups as espousing "white supremacist or white separatist ideologies."

White GOPer: We Can Beat Black US Rep By Adding More Prisoners To Her District

A white Florida Republican suggested knocking a black, longtime Democratic congresswoman out of her seat by gerrymandering more prisoners into her district, according to audio obtained by Politico and published on Wednesday.

Politico reported that state Rep. Janet Adkins (R) made the suggestion regarding U.S. Rep. Corrinne Brown's (D) district in a closed-door meeting of the North Florida Republican caucus.

“It's a perfect storm," Adkins said on the audio recording. "You draw it in such a fashion so perhaps, a majority, or maybe not a majority, but a number of them will live in the prisons, thereby not being able to vote."

Adkins made sure there were no reporters in the room before she made her comments, according to the report.

Brown, who is black, has filed a lawsuit to challenge the proposed redrawing of her district. She also told the Florida Senate Redistricting Committee that she was concerned that redrawing her district to include more prisons would lower its black voting population from 50 to 45 percent, according to Politico.

Five-year old gives the pope a letter because she doesn’t want her parents deported

Five-year-old Sophie Cruz, the daughter of two undocumented immigrants, reached the pope on her second attempt Wednesday after he motioned for her to approach his popemobile.
Sophie, of Los Angeles, wanted to meet with Pope Francis after becoming scared that her parents could be deported. Unlike her parents, she and her sister are American citizens.

“She lives it every day,” her father, Raul Cruz, said in Spanish. “She sees family get separated, and we always tell her the truth when she asks why.”

Security stopped Sophie as she first approached the pope during a parade at the Ellipse outside the White House. On her second attempt, after her father lifted her over the barricade, Francis motioned for her to come over, and security obliged.

The pope kissed her cheek and took her envelope, which included a letter about immigration and a photo with words that translate as “My friends and I love each other no matter our skin color.” Sophie said her hope is that he can bring change to U.S. immigration laws.

“To speak with the president and Congress, for they can give ‘la reforma migratoria’ for all the immigrants,” she said, adding that she has a second letter to give President Obama someday.

Anti-Muslim Activist Says He Plans To Arrest Dem Sen. Debbie Stabenow

This may be Jon Ritzheimer's craziest stunt yet.

The organizer of a protest and "Draw Mohammad" cartoon contest earlier this year outside a Phoenix mosque threatened in an open letter posted online Monday to arrest a Democratic senator over her support for the Iranian nuclear deal.

The open letter did not appear publicly on Ritzheimer's Facebook page, but his supporters posted it on their profiles. In the letter, Ritzheimer, a former U.S. Marine, identified himself as a member of two loosely-organized militia groups — the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters — and announced that he and "a growing number of patriots" planned to arrest Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).

"She will be arrested for treason under Article 3 Section 3 of the Constitution," the open letter read. "We have chosen her as our first target due to our strong ties with the Michigan State Militia and their lax gun laws that will allow us to operate in a manner necessary for an operation like this. After we successfully detain her we will continue to move across the country and arrest everyone involved with the Iran Nuke Deal. Even the President who brokered this deal."

A Stabenow aide declined to comment on the letter to Roll Call. U.S. Capitol Police told the publication that law enforcement was monitoring the situation, however.

Joe Scarborough goes off on rant after Scott Walker's departure.

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough had a strong message for the remaining Republican presidential candidates on Tuesday morning: "Stop withering in the corner or you’re going to end up like Scott Walker."

Scarborough, who already had harsh words for retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson on Tuesday, urged GOPers to speak out against the bigotry among the party's frontrunners:

I’ll say it again, presidential candidates. I know you watch this show. When you’re going 90 miles an hour forward, nobody stops you. Stop being cowards. Speak out against this bigotry. Speak out about it now. For every vote you lose today, you’re going to pick up four three or four months from now.

Who will inherit Trump's supporters?

I don't care what the polls say, Donald Trump is going to implode and I don't take Carson or Florin seriously. So the only mystery at this point is where will Trump's supporters go? If they like obnoxious, they can go to Christie. But if you put a $5 bill in my hand to place a bet, I would STILL put it on Scott Walker. He's the only candidate in the field with a record of turning white, working class resentment into electoral success.

Pro-Hillary PAC puts Jeb! back on his heels.

The comments came during a heated exchange with Trump, and Bush's campaign thinks they will contribute to the eventual demise of the Republican front-runner. But Democrats accuse Bush of either forgetting or overlooking the fact that the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania happened on his brother's watch. And polls released Sunday suggest that Trump's lead in the GOP field is holding steady.

Beyond the 9/11 attacks, the ad suggests that George W. Bush did not keep Americans safe from "a crumbling economy," "a bureaucratic catastrophe" and "an unnecessary war."

"It’s as if Jeb Bush believes his brother’s presidency began on September 12th, 2001. But we’re not letting Jeb rewrite history," Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United for Change, said in a statement about the ad. "It’s convenient but not honest to ignore the facts that the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor happened on George W. Bush’s watch after dismissing warnings from U.S. intelligence officials weeks before 9/11 that Osama bin Laden was ‘determined to strike in US’ and that his terrorist network might hijack American planes."

On Friday night, Jeb Bush reiterated his belief that his brother deftly handled national security and foreign affairs. Speaking at a Michigan conference for some of the Republican Party's most generous donors, he said that the next president will need to do a better job with international relations than President Obama has.

One reason to pay attention to Bristol Palin

Bristol Palin, thrust into the limelight by getting pregnant while unmarried during her mother’s vice presidential campaign, subsequently embarked on a short-lived reality television show—the latest manifestation of the American eagerness to make money without actually working—and became pregnant a second time while serving as a representative for an abstinence campaign. It’s your choice to decide whether she is a comic figure or a pathetic one.

But I think that the reason to pay any attention to her is that she is also a representative figure: a young person of slender education, modest abilities, and deep resentments. There are multitudes like her among us with simplistic beliefs based on shaky information and unexamined prejudices.

Many of them vote, and they are not going to fade away. Some way has to be found to address their concerns without hysterical misinformation. These people’s belief that their country is being taken away from them, their anxieties about a multicultural society personified by Obama, have been exacerbated by the economic slippage of the middle class. One issue is connected to the others. Demagogy is easy; governance is hard.
