With Roe Under Threat, House Plans to Vote on Bill to Counter Abortion Curbs

Source: New York Times

House Democrats plan on Friday to push through broad legislation to uphold abortion rights, taking urgent action after a major Supreme Court setback as they brace for a ruling next year that could further roll back access to abortion nationwide.

Opponents of the law - including some Republicans who have supported abortion rights - argue that it would go far beyond the landmark court precedent, stripping states of much of their ability to regulate abortion and impose measures intended to make the procedure safe.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a Republican who backs abortion rights and was seen as a potential vote for the new bill, said she would not support it in its current form.

Multiple public opinion polls conducted since the Supreme Court agreed to take on the Mississippi case have reflected strong support for keeping abortion legal - nearly 60 percent in some surveys - though that support typically declines for abortions performed later in pregnancies

QAnon conspiracy theorists say Gabby Petito was an 'actress' and a 'false flag' the mainstream media

The mystery surrounding Gabby Petito's death has taken on new life in QAnon conspiracy theorist circles, with people suggesting that Petito is a crisis actor and a '"false flag" to distract people from President Joe Biden's "failures."

Some even claim that Petito doesn't actually exist.

Petito's disappearance sparked a nationwide search and opened the floodgates for a sea of internet sleuths attempting to find her. Earlier this week, remains in Wyoming were confirmed to be Petito, and her death was ruled a homicide. Separately, her fiance, Brian Laundrie, has disappeared and been declared a person of interest in the case.

Florida janitor sentenced to 60 years for hiding camera in girls' restroom

A Florida high school janitor was sentenced to 60 years in prison for secretly filming students’ in the girls’ bathroom.

The Department of Justice said Derremy Walker, 31, was sentenced on two counts of using or trying to use children to produce sexually explicit videos. Walker will also serve a lifetime term of supervised release and register as a sexual offender.

Walker was a contracted janitor at Oviedo High School in November 2019 when two 15-year-old students found an actively recording cell phone hidden under the sink in a bathroom stall. The phone was analyzed by investigators, which revealed Walker placed the phone in the same location on two prior days in November 2019.

Each time, the phone created a one-hour video of students in that stall, according to the DOJ. The phone had been recording 15 minutes before the students found it.

8-year-old girl dragged 300 feet by vehicle after trying to stop her mom from driving drunk

I found this horrible story out of OC in California As reported by KTLA

"A woman was arrested after she allegedly dragged her 8-year-old daughter and a bystander with a vehicle in Placentia after the child tried to stop her mother from driving under the influence late Thursday night, according to police.

The incident began when the mother, identified as 44-year-old Erin Garcia, decided to leave her mother’s home in the 400 block of Orchid Grove while she was still apparently intoxicated, the Placentia Police Department stated in a news release.

Garcia’s young daughter became concerned about her mother getting behind the wheel and grabbed the passenger’s door handle, telling her to stop, police officials said.

But Garcia simply looked at the child and began driving away, dragging the little girl alongside the vehicle for some 300 feet, according to the release."

Source: CNN

(CNN)A Southern Californian man who previously pleaded guilty to state murder and attempted murder charges following a 2019 attack on a synagogue in San Diego pleaded guilty Friday to federal hate crime charges, according to the Justice Department.

"The defendant entered a synagogue with the intent to kill all those inside because of his hatred for Jewish people, and days earlier used fire in an attempt to destroy another sacred house of worship because of his hatred for Muslims," Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement.
John T. Earnest of Rancho Penasquitos pleaded guilty to a 113-count hate crimes indictment, the statement said. Prosecutors said the plea agreement includes a recommended sentence of life in prison plus 30 years.
In addition to the synagogue attack on April 27, 2019, Earnest admitted he tried to set fire to the Dar-ul-Arqam mosque in Escondido, California, on March 24, 2019, the Justice Department said.

Maricopa County and Arizona Senate reach agreement after months of sparring over 2020 election audit

Source: CNN

Arizona's Maricopa County and the state Senate have reached an agreement after a months-long dispute stemming from the local government's refusal to hand over electronic voting equipment logs related to the November 2020 election.

The Republican-controlled state Senate has been sparring with Maricopa County officials who didn't comply with subpoenas to release certain information related its voting system following the presidential election.
Fueled by former President Donald Trump's claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 election, Arizona state Senate Republicans demanded an election audit that began in April of the results in Maricopa County.
