shcrane71's JournalDoes anyone here have a mesh network in their community?
If one got one of these networks working in a community, would that mean that people on the networks would no longer need to pay an ISP for connectivity?
This American Life -- Has it "jumped the shark"?
I just listened to the humiliation of Mike Daisey by Ira. I enjoy a bit of schadenfreuden as much as the next American -- in moderation. A simple redaction, or even a 5-10 minute redaction is dignified. Forty minutes into the show, and a public humiliation of Daisey has me cringing.
Global Warming sucks. I don't want to garden yet.
I don't wanna get out the lawn mower, or mulch, or even be outside without a hat. It's March. I'm still hibernating. Screw this.
Omaha attempting to pass anti-discrimination LGBT/gender identity for employment right now.

Does the FCC's failure to fine Limbaugh represent regulatory capture?
Per wikipedia:
In economics, regulatory capture occurs when a state regulatory agency created to act in the public interest instead advances the commercial or special interests that dominate the industry or sector it is charged with regulating. Regulatory capture is a form of government failure, as it can act as an encouragement for large firms to produce negative externalities. The agencies are called "captured agencies".
Lies, bias, slander, and solicitation for pornography aren't an efficient use of our airwaves, and it creates inefficiencies in our government -- i.e. wasting time with all-male religious panels to discuss birth control, which then are countered by one female, who then is demonized, and then our executive branch contacts the slandered citizen because the de facto leader of the Repugs is a bully.
Is the recession gouging Nebraska's football budget? Asst. coach squatting in Memorial stadium.
That's where Ron Brown is listing his address when speaking before the Omaha city council. Brown would like Omaha city council members to think of Jesus when deciding whether to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the city's non-discrimination, employment ordinance.

Help. Is it possible to change a person's mind, and have that individual vote for gay rights?
An ordinance is up for a vote (this is Omaha, NE) that would include LGBT people in a city-wide anti-discrimination ordinance. What are some arguments to persuade a city council member who was supportive, but after a public hearing has been swayed? The new concerns deal with the language and the distinction between harassment and discrimination. For example, would it be harassment, under the ordinance, if an employer expressed their views towards homosexuality or gender identity without, necessarily discriminating against an individual.
I don't know if it's even possible to reason with some people. My argument would be to check to see if there have been complaints against religious speech and freedom in other cities that have similar ordinances. But that's me trying not to be inflammatory, and I know I could say a lot of inflammatory things about this.
Ms. Magazine "Should we ban slut and ho from the lexicon?"
http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2012/03/06/should-we-ban-slut-and-ho-from-the-lexicon/This is the climate in which we live, where male privilege runs rampant and women are still on the defensive. And where slut will maintain its power over us as long as rape and other forms of sexual violence go unpunished, as long as our reproductive rights are undermined and as long as our reproductive health options are limited (the very issue that forced Fluke to speak out in the first place). Moreover, ho will maintain its power as long as we insist on racial and class hierarchies among women.
Isnt Limbaughs slut-shaming based on the same sentiment that provoked a Toronto police officer last year to tell women not to dress like sluts to avoid being raped, thus igniting the worldwide SlutWalk protests in response? And isnt the ensuing debate among feminists over this activist strategy indicative of our fear of the word slut?
As I suggested in a previous post, the SlutWalk has provided an ample opportunity for women to confront words like slut and ho head on and divest them of their power. If we really think these words cant be reclaimed, and rappers like Nicki Minaj are wasting their time, then perhaps its time we get down to business and ban slut and ho from our lexicon, the way the N-word is now taboo.
Of course that wont change the hate in the hearts of some, but we can mobilize that hate toward a counter-narrative for a new political movement.
Personally, it seems silly to me to ban words as they're still out there. People still use them. It's more about the context that words are used. I think the author is ignoring that after centuries of misogyny women realize that we need to be mentors and helpers of the next generation in order to achieve parity with men. Equality with men is difficult to achieve when women can be bullied and discredited by billionaires that are the de facto talking heads of one of the two political parties in the country.
