West Virginia state Senate candidate, a veteran, brutally beaten

Source: MSNBC

West Virginia state Senate candidate Richard Ojeda was brutally beaten during a cookout Sunday — just two days before his primary — and nearly run over with a pickup truck, Ojeda told NBC News.

Jonathan Stuart Porter, 41, was in custody Sunday. State Trooper Zachary Holden told NBC News he was being held on suspicion of malicious assault, malicious attempted assault and felony destruction of property.

In an interview from his hospital room in Charleston, Ojeda, 45, a Democrat and military veteran whose primary contest is Tuesday, said he had been at a barbecue in the mountains about 60 miles southwest of Charleston when Porter asked for a bumper sticker.

Ojeda, who said he has known Porter since they were kids, placed one on the rear bumper of Porter’s truck. Then Porter asked for a second one on the vehicle’s front grill.

“That’s all I remember,” Ojeda said. “When I woke up, my head was on a tree stump covered in blood. Everyone was looking at me.”

Ben Carson: I Didn’t Want To Endorse Trump, But He Promised Me A Position

Source: Think Progress

Dr. Ben Carson, who endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy on Friday, appears less than enthusiastic about that decision. And the real reason the unsuccessful GOP presidential hopeful endorsed his former rival could be a violation of federal law.
Carson told the conservative online site NewsMax TV on Monday that he backed Trump based on a practical calculus.

“I didn’t see a path for [John] Kasich, who I like, or for [Marco] Rubio, who I like. As far as [Ted] Cruz is concerned, I don’t think he’s gonna be able to draw independents and Democrats unless has has some kind of miraculous change… Is there another scenario that I would have preferred? Yes. But that scenario isn’t available.” Pressed to clarify, Carson said he meant he’d prefer to have backed one of the other candidates.

Carson then said that Trump had promised him a role in his administration, “certainly in an advisory capacity.” Asked by NewsMax’s Steve Malzberg whether this meant a cabinet position, Carson declined to “reveal any details about it right now, because all of this is still very liquid.”

Federal law expressly prohibits candidates from directly or indirectly promising “the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy.” The penalty for violations could include fines or a year in jail — two years if the violation was willful.

Ouch- it is a felony under 18 USC 599 for a political candidate to offer a Federal Government position to a person in exchange for their political support.

Someone needs to call the F.B.I. and report this.

Sanders packs Breslin Center with turn out to vote message

Source: Lansing State Journal

EAST LANSING - Delegate counts and Super Tuesday results did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 10,000 people who came to see Sen. Bernie Sanders speak at Michigan State University's Breslin Center Wednesday evening.

Crowds composed primarily of young adults listened as Sanders leaned heavily on his messages of social and economic equality during his hour-long speech.

“People out there don’t want you to vote or to participate in the political process because they want to make all the decisions for you,” Sanders said. “They love the idea that in the last winter election in 2014, 63 percent of the American people did not vote.”

Michigan State University's BRESLIN CENTER, where over 10,000 people showed up in the cold to come see the next President.

I just watched Bernie give a magnificent speech, in which he:

1. Called for the RESIGNATION OF MICHIGAN GOVERNOR RICK SNYDER over the Flint Lead Scandal, the Aramark prison food scandal, the Veterans Health Care scandal, and all the other offenses against human beings.

2. Outlined a vision of a nation in positive growth, with equality for all, with hope and optimism.

3. Told the audience that "LOVE TRUMPS HATE".

God that was great.
I LOVE Bernie.
He's going to make a great President.

Ten THOUSAND people inside Breslin Center to listen to Bernie:

And I'm about 1,000th in line outside.

North Carolina reveals results of welfare applicant drug tests

Source: Mashable- on Yahoo

North Carolina revealed early results on Tuesday from a round of drug tests given to those applying for or living with the help of welfare.

From the 7,600 recipients and applicants given an initial screening, social workers referred only 2% for drug testing. That amounted to 89 people.

Of those 89, 21 people tested positive for drugs, representing less than 0.3% of the total number of those screened.

Anyone who has used drugs in the past year or was convicted of a felony drug crime in the past three years gets tested. If adult applicants and recipients miss an appointment or test positive ...

Another yyuuuge waste of money.

The previous article said it was costing North Carolina almost $100 per test.

To reduce benefits for 12 people.

Hillary Clinton Won 6 Out of 6 Coin Tosses Last Night.

Here’s How Statistically Improbable That Is

Amanda Girard | February 2, 2016

The Iowa Democratic caucus vote count was so close last night that at least 6 precincts were decided by flipping a coin — an obscure procedure in the Iowa caucus bylaws. And in all 6 instances, the last remaining county delegate went to Hillary Clinton. Winning 6 coin tosses in a row is extraordinarily rare, and only has a 1.6 percent probability of occurring. As journalist Ben Norton explained, that’s broken down by calculating (1/2)^6, which is 1/64 — or 1.6 percent.

If Bernie Sanders had won half of the coin flips and split the six county delegates three and three with Clinton, he would have finished at 698.49 delegates to Clinton’s 696.57, effectively giving him an Iowa victory. According to a live map of all Iowa precincts, Clinton has a razor-thin 0.3 percent lead over the Vermont U.S. Senator with 99.9 percent of precincts reporting.

In addition to the coin flip tiebreakers, one widely discussed controversy was a missing 60 voters in one Iowa precinct which may have flipped the delegate count in Bernie Sanders’ favor:

David Schweingruber, an associate professor of sociology at Iowa State University, explained to the Des Moines Register how a total of 484 eligible caucus attendees were initially recorded at Ames.
Yet when each candidate’s preference group was counted, Clinton had 240 supporters, Sanders had 179, and Martin O’Malley had five and was declared out.

Those figures added up to just 424 participants, leaving 60 apparently missing. The numbers were plugged into a formula that determines delegate allocations, with Clinton receiving four delegates and Sanders three – leaving one delegate unassigned.

Pot Brownies Found In Local Elementary School

Source: WHMI Radio

Authorities want to know who put pot brownies in the teacher’s lounge at a local elementary school. New details reveal the incident occurred at Spring Mills Elementary school in Highland Township.

Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jim Baker alerted staff that earlier this week a plate of marijuana-laced baked goods was left in a teachers lounge at the school. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office say one of the school’s teachers went to a hospital after she started feeling sick. After an evaluation at the hospital, the teacher reported that she had tested positive for the presence of THC- the active ingredient in marijuana. The teacher stated that the only unusual item she had consumed was a brownie from the staff break room. Two other teachers also reportedly consumed the brownies and felt ill but did not seek medical treatment.

Deputies from the Highland Township Substation recovered the remaining brownies from the staff break room which tested positive for THC at the Forensics Laboratory. The school district is working with law enforcement to figure out who brought the brownies to school. District officials say they don't know whether they were put out intentionally or brought by mistake. The investigation is ongoing.

Teen arrested for homemade clock seeking $15M in damages

Source: USA Today/ TV 11 Atlanta

IRVING, Texas -- Attorneys for the family of Ahmed Mohamed, the Irving High School student who made international headlines after being arrested earlier this year for bringing a homemade clock to school, have sent letters to both the city of Irving and the Irving School District demanding apologies and $15 million in damages.

Both letters claim that Mohamed's civil rights were violated, and he and his family have suffered physical and mental anguish because of the ordeal.

The letters claim Ahmed was singled out "because of his race, national origin, and religion."

"Ahmed never threatened anyone, never caused harm to anyone, and never intended to," read the letter to the city. "The only one who was hurt that day was Ahmed, and the damages he suffered were not because of oversight or incompetence. The school and city officials involved knew what they needed to do to protect Ahmed's rights. They just decided not to do it."

Papa John’s franchisee is Going to Jail

Source: Fortune Magazine

A Papa John’s franchisee received a jail sentence after being charged earlier this year with not paying workers minimum wage and with falsifying documents.

Abdul Jamil Khokhar, who owns nine Papa John’s locations in New York City with BMY Foods, pled guilty to failing to pay workers in compliance with the New York Labor Law, which is a misdemeanor, and to filing false business records, a felony.

As it’s stated on the Attorney General’s website, instead of paying his employees the proper minimum overtime wages according to New York State law, Khokhar paid them the same minimum wage they would make during regular hours. To hide this illegal practice, he created fake identities under which the employees would file their overtime hours to make it look as if they were distributed among more workers. As was previously reported by Fortune, this affected the wages of over 300 current and former employees.

A civil settlement secured by the U.S. Department of Labor in July of this year required Khokhar to pay $230,000 in damages and $50,000 in civil monetary penalties. He must also pay an additional $230,000 in back pay and spend 60 days in jail, as was agreed upon during his sentencing as part of his plea deal
