Workers Die In Bangladesh Factory While Making Clothes For Walmart And Others

Dhaka factory in flames @ IndiaToday.in
In an stunning cultural juxtaposition, Black Friday merchants counted their profits and victory-pumped shoppers celebrated their scores in malls throughout the U.S., while factory workers on the other side of the world who made many of the clothing items shoppers bought this weekend jumped from windows of a seven-story factory in the effort to save their lives in a late Saturday inferno. Many of them were not successful; as of the most recent count, 124 of those workers have died, with many more injured.
In the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka, a large garment run by Tazreen Fashions, one of the many factories in the area that provide product for American companies including Wal-mart, JC Penneys, the Gap, Levi Strauss, Kohls, Zara, H & M, and others, burst into flames Saturday night in a fire (of currently unknown origin) that started on the bottom floor of the building and quickly rushed up the other floors, trapping workers with no way to descend from the building. As India Today reports:
By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 115 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub said. He said another 9 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals.
Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.

Imagine 124 workers dying in a major fire, in a factory that supplies the largest corporation in the world.
No, this isn't the New York Triangle Shirtwaiste factory fire of 1911.
It's the Wal-Mart supplier Tazreen Fashions, who's factory burned last night in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Tarzreen Fashions supplied Wal-Mart, JC Penneys, the Gap, Levi Strauss, Kohls, Zara, H & M, and others.
Where your clothes are made...matters.
GOP poll challengers tried to intimidate Genoa voters, clerk says
Source: Livingston County Press
Republican poll challengers attempted to intimidate voters in each of Genoa Township's 12 voting precincts this month, the township's GOP clerk said.
Township Clerk Polly Skolarus said the Republican challengers did not challenge voters' registration, but transmitted their data electronically to state party officials during the Nov. 6 election.
Skolarus said none of the GOP poll challengers arrived with lists of voters they planned to challenge, as is customary.
"There were a lot of people that were not happy that those people were sitting there. They felt it was an invasion of their privacy," she said."The Republican Party making the decision to put them in every precinct did them no favors. I think it made them enemies," Skolarus added.

Note: THIS is in an area that the township next to the burial place of former Michigan Governor and father of the (R) candidate, George Romney (Brighton, Michigan). It's about as "red" a township as it gets in Michigan. Yet all precincts had voter intimidation republicans on duty, to offend voters going to the polls.

Southfield Twp. voter appears to die, then asks 'Did I vote?'
By Tom Greenwood and Rod Beard
The Detroit News
Southfield Township Sometimes dead men really do get to vote.
Ty Houston, 48, a home care registered nurse, was toiling on his absentee ballot Monday afternoon when things got strange at township offices on 13 Mile.
"I was filling out the form as were an elderly couple sitting at a nearby table," said Houston on Tuesday. "His wife, who was helping him fill out the ballot, asked him a couple of questions but he didn't respond. She screamed for help and I went over to see what I could do."
Houston laid the victim on the floor and went to work.
"He was dead," Houston said. "He had no heartbeat and he wasn't breathing. I started CPR, and after a few minutes, he revived and started breathing again. He knew his name and his wife's name."
What happened next astounded Houston and the victim's wife.
"The first question he asked was 'Did I vote?'"
Dumbfounded, the man's wife told him that whether he voted was the least of their concerns.
"She told him 'Your life is my concern,'" Houston said.
According to Houston, the man who had a tracheotomy in his throat gulped down a few more breaths and then told her there are only two things that are important to me: "That I love you and that I finished what I came here to do
vote."
EMS personnel took the pair to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, but only after the couple wrapped Houston in thanks and hugs.
"It was God's divine word that I be there. Originally, I was just going skip the ballot and just go to lunch that day," Houston said.

Michigan troops' ballots spark battle
Source: Livingston County Press
An advocacy group said Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson did the "bare minimum" to prevent absentee ballots from being sent late to Michiganders overseas and serving in the U.S. military.
Last week, Johnson and state Attorney General Bill Schuette sued 24 municipalities in county circuit courts seeking extensions for 38 of 8,700 of the absentee ballots to be counted under federal election law. The extensions, if granted, would be for the number of days the ballots were sent late.
The U.S. Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act, signed into law in 2009, requires absentee ballots be sent overseas and to military personnel 45 days prior to federal elections in order to counted on Election Day. The deadline for the Nov. 6 election was Sept. 22.
The Michigan Election Coalition accused Johnson of scolding local governments rather than taking action to help them despite a July U.S. Department of Justice complaint against the state for 155 absentee ballots from 70 municipalities sent late for the August primary.

Michigan local governments were late sending out ballots, but the Secretary of State did little or nothing to help. More republican obstructionism of voters.
TREASON is a strong word
And it applies. Why isn't the Justice Department indicting House GOP Congressman Jason Chaffetz?
[quote]
While attempting to use the death of American government officials in Libya to help Mitt Romneys election bid, fellow Utah Republican Jason Chaffetz, and his House Republican colleagues on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, outed a classified CIA operation, on C-SPAN no less, endangering American national security.
Oops.
Oh but, as the saying goes, it gets better.
Chaffetz and company were using the death of the US ambassador to Libya, and others, to try to smear the President for security lapses, and as the Washington Posts Dana Milbank points out in a great scoop, Chaffetz and company managed to create their own massive security lapse.
It would be funny if it werent so dangerous.
In a nutshell, the State Department was briefing the congressional Republicans, at an open hearing that the Republicans called, and were showing commercially-available satellite images of the area of the attack. Suddenly, Republican Chaffetz and GOP Committee chair Darrell Issa (another piece of work) both suggested that the images showed classified information that could endanger current ongoing operations in the area. As Milbank points out, this confirmed two things one, that the picture was apparently of a CIA base, and two, that the base might still be in operation even after the attack that killed our ambassador.

Punished for giving a cold man a blanket
Detroit paramedic: I'm being punished for giving a cold man a blanket
By Charlie LeDuff
FOX 2 News Reporter
DETROIT -- A Detroit paramedic says he is in trouble for breaking the rules. His offense? Giving a cold man a blanket.
Top brass tell us employees must have permission to hand out "department property", but that blanket was one of many donated to the department to help people in need.
Ladies and gentlemen, this might be the most ridiculous and bone-headed Detroit ambulance story yet. It started two weeks ago when a house caught on fire. An old cripple man lived inside. They brought him outside. He was in his underwear. It was cold. He was shivering. You give him a blanket, right? Right. Then guess what happened?
"I'm being punished for giving a man a blanket," said paramedic Jeff Gaglio.
He called in sick Wednesday, sick to his stomach after being punished for giving away city-owned property.
"Yesterday I got notified that I'll be brought up on EMS departmental charges," Gaglio said.
What's that mean?
"I'm being punished. I'm being punished for giving a man a blanket, something that would seem like a common, every day courtesy. Something that any man or woman would do in the City of Detroit, give a freezing man a blanket. I'm being punished for it."
Who's punishing him?
"The chief of EMS Jerald James."
You know what makes this story even more outrageous? The city didn't even pay for the blankets. Matt Cahillane, president of Firefighter Support Services, donated them.
"Anybody who's been displaced by a fire, that's what they're for," he said.
Does he mind people having to keep the blankets?
"I think that's what they're for."

BREAKING: Poll - 7% think PBS spending makes up HALF of all Federal Spending.
Polling data says 7% of the American public actually believes that
the Corporation for Public Broadcasting makes up OVER 50% of all
federal government spending.
An amazing 22% believe that
Public Broadcasting accounts for ten percent or more of all
federal government spending.
See question number 39.

(The actual number is 0.012% of 2011's federal spending, by the way)
(What a sad commentary of the state of our Union).
