The Strange Case Of A Father Who Sued The Obama Administration To Keep His Daughters From Getting...

Providing two college-age women with health insurance that covers birth control, according to an attorney for Missouri state Rep. Paul Joseph Wieland (R) and his wife Teresa, is the equivalent of giving your children free access to a “stocked unlocked liquor cabinet.” In case the judges hearing his client’s case did not find that analogy particularly compelling, he also compared birth control to pornography.

If the Wielands’ lawsuit succeeds, they will win the right to deny their three daughters — two of whom are adults — a health insurance policy that covers contraception. Wieland and his wife claim that they “cannot provide, fund or in any way be a participant in the provision of health care coverage for contraception, sterilization, abortions or abortifacient drugs and devices, such as Plan B, ella, and copper IUDs, or related education and counseling, without violating their sincerely-held religious beliefs.”

The Wieland family is insured through a health plan Missouri offers to its employees. They allege that Missouri expanded this plan in 2013 to include contraceptive care in order to comply with federal rules that require employer-provided plans to include this care. The gist of their argument is that they should be allowed to continue to remain on Missouri’s health plan for state employees, but that they should also be offered a special carve out so that their plan does not cover contraception and other reproductive services that Paul and Teresa Wieland find objectionable.

How the Defense Industry Bankrolls Pro-War Pundits

The US military media industrial complex is corrupting our airwaves.

As the debate over ISIS and US actions against that terrorist group continues, we're seeing more and more so-called "policy experts" appearing on the mainstream media, explaining why American military action against ISIS is our only choice.

Well, as it turns out, these "policy experts" who are so quick to pitch war and military conflict are often really just shills for our nation's military industrial complex, and they're being paid very handsomely for all of their fear-mongering.

Lee Fang over at The Nation has revealed the truth about just a couple of the many, many "policy experts" that have been flooding our airwaves in recent weeks.

For example, there's retired General Jack Keane.

Keane is the head of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which also employs Liz Cheney and neoconservative firebrand Bill Kristol. The ISW itself is backed by a handful of the United States' largest and most profitable defense contractors.

Keane's views and opinions on the current ISIS crisis have appeared in a variety of news outlets, including The New York Times and the BBC.

He's also been on "Fox So-Called News" almost a dozen times to promote his defense industry-backed views on ISIS and the role the US military should be playing

But as Lee Fang points out, when Keane isn't being interviewed by the mainstream media, he's a very busy man.

Keane is a special adviser to the military contractor Academi (formerly Blackwater), a board member for tank and airplane maker General Dynamics, and a "venture partner" with an investment firm that partners with various defense contractors.

For his work with General Dynamics alone, Keane has been paid a six-figure salary every year since 2004, and last year, he made over $250,000.

This is a really old story but was too cute to pass up...

Big Bear Rescue on the Donner Memorial Bridge

The Donner Memorial Bridge is a concrete arch span built during the 1920s near Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada mountains, not far from Lake Tahoe, California. The bridge used to be part of US Route 40, the primary east-west highway for motorists traveling between San Francisco and Atlantic City, New Jersey until Interstate 80 was constructed during the 1960s.

Most of the traffic is gone, but the arched bridge is still there, and the views it provides remain top-notch. Telstar Logistics maintains a Forward Operating Base nearby during the winter months, so our Tactical Recreation Units visit this sector with some regularity. Which is why we took notice when Tahoe City operative Scott Gillespie sent us this wild, wild tale about very large bear that got stuck under the historic bridge last weekend, and how said bear was subsequently rescued. Scott writes:


"I did not take these, but these are some amazing shots. A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. At one point the bear tested its ability to climb down by lowering its feet down the side but decided against that idea and pulled itself back up! Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net."

The photos below show the trapped bear, the dramatic rescue, and a very nonchalant bear sauntering off thereafter. Stuff you won't see on Animal Planet (yet):
