ellenrr's JournalJournal of Neuroscience: Mindfulness Meditation Decreases Pain more than placebo
Summary of the findings:
Recent findings have demonstrated that mindfulness meditation significantly reduces pain. Given that the gold standard for evaluating the efficacy of behavioral interventions is based on appropriate placebo comparisons, it is imperative that we establish whether there is an effect supporting meditation-related pain relief above and beyond the effects of placebo.
Here, we provide novel evidence demonstrating that mindfulness meditation produces greater pain relief and employs distinct neural mechanisms than placebo cream and sham mindfulness meditation. Specifically, mindfulness meditation-induced pain relief activated higher-order brain regions, including the orbitofrontal and cingulate cortices. In contrast, placebo analgesia was associated with decreased pain-related brain activation.
These findings demonstrate that mindfulness meditation reduces pain through unique mechanisms and may foster greater acceptance of meditation as an adjunct pain therapy.

Thanksgiving: celebrating the privilege to forget
So on this thanksgiving, we are all American. We must all sit at the dinner table and choose forgetfulness: Dont bring up politics and rain on everyones parade. This holiday isnt about ethnic cleansing; its about sharing and giving thanks now.
In many regards, those at the table are free: free from concern about losing property as it is appropriated in land grabs by the state, free from the burden of considering racial, gender, and legal-status categories as crucial determinants in ability to survive.
It is a freedom that provides suburban families central air while people of the Navajo nation choke on coal dust. Capitalism eats the lives of occupied peoples, collateral damage in a process of wealth accumulation. Our industries seep up, contaminate the ground water that once sat fresh and clean beneath what is left of the Navajo lands, so that America can maintain a healthy middle class with access to affordable electricity.
Black lives are cut short with the shot of a police gun, the poison of an unjust food system, countless violences of inherited dispossession and systemic racism. Beyond territorial borders, the finances of the American colonial project, for which so many nice families are thankful, fund the ammunition of other colonies, where other colonized people continue to resist the encroachment of capitalisms beneficiaries.

and today I remember the people who have nothing to be thankful for:

Today I am thankful for...
all the people from Palestine to Ferguson who in the face of deep colonial oppression fight for justice, self-determination and dignity.
Palestine Legal is Thankful for...
For the staff at Palestine Legal, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the past and present struggles of Native Americans, and all indigenous peoples whose histories have been, and continue to be, unwritten and rewritten at the hands of colonizers.
We are thankful for the many activists in the U.S. fighting to change the narrative of what Thanksgiving represents.
We are thankful for the steadfast organizers who are demanding systemic change despite relentless intimidation, harassment, and disingenuous calls for "dialogue," "civility" and "peace." From Students for Justice in Palestine to #BlackLivesMatter to immigrant and refugee rights activists your resilience gives us hope for a more just future.

Israel meets with Google and YouTube to discuss censoring Palestinian videos
Israels Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely has met with representatives of YouTube and Google to discuss ways to cooperate in what she calls the fight against inciting violence and terrorism.
Israels Maariv newspaper reported yesterday that Hotovely agreed to work with Google and YouTube in order to establish a joint working mechanism to monitor and prevent the publication of inflammatory material originating in the Palestinian terriroties.
Since the latest escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israeli security services that erupted at the beginning of October, many people have been sharing videos depicting Israeli aggression towards Palestinians to highlight the Palestinian perspective of the conflict. London-based Arab newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed has expressed concerns that the meetings suggest moves towards censoring Palestinian material on the part of the Israeli state.
