The Badass Truth Graph of Republican Politics and COVID

The numbers on this moving graph are the total confirmed normalized* cases per million for each state since June.
A '10,000' means 1% of the state's population has tested positive of COVID since June 1.
June 1 was chosen as it was around that time that countries worldwide that had been sucker-punched months before had the opportunity to apply proven preventative measures.
It also provided an opportunity to contrast the resulting data with states' political affiliations, using the Cook Partisan Voting Index.

The results suggest a strong correlation between a state's political leanings and its ability to employ proven science to slow the spread of COVID.

Sorry this can't be shown here but it's definitely worth the click.

The Virtual Power Plant -- That's Us! -- Lowers Fossil Fuel Use

Residential solar panels and battery backups are becoming more and more popular as efficiency rises and costs sink.

This explosion in distributed solar makes a new idea possible: virtual power plants, or a smart network of individual solar panels that can act like a big power plant when electricity is needed most.

And as extreme weather and fires threaten many communities, this idea is arriving in the nick of time. What's not to like about a great idea when Sim City's used to illustrate, right?

Bezos Gives $10 Billion to Environmental Projects From His Newly Created Earth Fund

I'd like to think this announcement was deliberately timed to coincide with Biden's election.

From Slashdot on FB:

Jeff Bezos has named 16 environmental organizations that will get the first chunk of his $10 billion fund for climate action. From a report:

Collectively, they'll get $791 million from the richest man on Earth, although Bezos did not specify how much would go to each group. "I've spent the past several months learning from a group of incredibly smart people who've made it their life's work to fight climate change and its impact on communities around the world," Bezos said. "I'm inspired by what they're doing, and excited to help them scale."

The Amazon CEO announced the creation of his personal $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund in February. His fund is equivalent to more than 7 percent of his net worth. It's also 10 times as much as philanthropic foundations gave globally in 2018 to efforts to slow climate change. For his first round of funding, Bezos chose to back a handful of legacy organizations with an established history of advocacy on behalf of the planet. His choice in recipients so far signals support for mainstream environmental groups rallying for new policies and research on climate change.

The full list of grantees are a mix of big name NGOs, labs, reforestation and climate justice groups. They include: The Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund, ClimateWorks Foundation, Dream Corps Green For All, Eden Reforestation Projects, Energy Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, NDN Collective, Rocky Mountain Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Solutions Project, Union of Concerned Scientists, World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund.

Finally, a billionaire who says he'll spend his money on preserving Earth.

The 83-year-old Swiss-born steel magnate Hansjörg Wyss — who’s now an avid outdoorsman living in Wyoming — has already donated $450 million to protect 40 million acres of land and water across the globe since the establishment of the Wyss Foundation in 1998.

Wyss has also supported anti-poaching efforts, river restoration projects, African national park improvements, rails-to-trails initiatives and land conversation in his beloved adopted home, the American West.

The new Wyss Campaign for Nature adds $1 billion more toward those efforts.

“Already, the campaign has identified nine locally led conservation projects spread across 13 countries — 10 million acres of land and 17,000 square kilometers of ocean in total — that will receive $48 million in assistance,” Mother Nature Network reports.

The first nine conservation projects to receive grants are:

1. Aconquija National Park and the National Reserve Project in Argentina

2. The Ansenuza National Park Project, also in Argentina

3. Costa Rica’s proposed Corcovado Marine Reserve

4. The multi-country Caribbean Marine Protected Areas initiative

5. The Andes Amazon Fund, which impacts Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Guyana

6. Romania’s Fundatia Conservation Carpathia, which spearheads conservation efforts in the Carpathian Mountains

7. The Edéhzhíe Dehcho Protected Area and National Wildlife Area in Canada’s Northwest Territories

8. Australia’s Nimmie-Caira Project

9. The Gonarezhou National Park Project in Zimbabwe

Funds will be granted to additional projects over the next 10 years.

“I believe this ambitious goal is achievable because I’ve seen what can be accomplished,” Wyss writes in an editorial for the New York Times.

Today is the 156th Anniversary of Sherman's March to the Sea

While the Biden/Harris administration builds back better, they and the 117th Congress would do well to hold Grant's spirit of dismantling. There can neither be coexisting "parallel" Republican strongholds nearby, nor hat in hand Republicans given positions of power.
Forgiveness is for God.
Forgetting is never.

More monuments for Sherman and Grant, I say. To remind the losers why they still keep losing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman's_March_to_the_Sea

William T. Sherman and the Union Army's commander, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, believed that the Civil War would come to an end only if the Confederacy's strategic capacity for warfare was decisively broken.

The march was made easier by able assistants such as Orlando Metcalfe Poe, chief of the bridge building and demolition team. Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman selected Poe as his chief engineer in 1864. Poe oversaw the burning of Atlanta, for which action he was honored by Sherman. Poe directly supervised the dismantling of all buildings and structures in Atlanta that could have provided any military value to the Confederates

Lookin' At You, Fakeass WH Occupant

To me Stevie Wonder broke music open, was ahead of his time, was America's equivalent of the Beatles, and today is a national treasure.

Ow

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Tellin' how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
You haven't done nothin'

Ow

It's not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself
The world is tired of pacifier
We want the truth and nothing else

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Tellin' how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
You haven't done nothin'

Jackson 5 join along with me say
Doo doo wop - hey hey hey
Doo doo wop - whoa whoa whoa
Doo doo wop - mm-mm-mm
Doo doo wop - naw naw naw
Doo doo wop - bum bum bum
Doo doo wop

We would not care to wake up to the nightmare
That's become real life, mm
But when misled who knows a person's mind
Can turn as cold as ice, um-hmm

Why do you keep on making us hear your song
Tellin' us how you are changin' right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
You haven't done nothin'
Yeah, now
Now-now-now, nothin', nothin'

Jackson 5 sing along again say
Doo doo wop
Doo doo wop - oh
Doo doo wop - go go go
Doo doo wop - sing it baby
Doo doo wop - bum bum bum
Doo doo wop - um
Sing it loud for your people say
Doo doo wop - um um um
Doo doo wop - stand up be counted, say
Doo doo wop - go go go
Doo doo wop - ow
