Profits and Pride at Stake, the Race for a Vaccine Intensifies

Source: New York Times

Seven of the roughly 90 projects being pursued by governments, pharmaceutical makers, biotech innovators and academic laboratories have reached the stage of clinical trials. With political leaders — not least President Trump — increasingly pressing for progress, and with big potential profits at stake for the industry, drug makers and researchers have signaled that they are moving ahead at unheard-of speeds.

Some experts say the more immediately promising field might be the development of treatments to speed recovery from Covid-19, an approach that has generated some optimism in the last week through initially encouraging research results on remdesivir, an antiviral drug previously tried in fighting Ebola...The U.S. government is already warning that American innovations must be protected from theft — chiefly from Beijing.

“Biomedical research has long been a focus of theft, especially by the Chinese government, and vaccines and treatments for the coronavirus are today’s holy grail,” John C. Demers, the assistant attorney general for national security, said on Friday. “Putting aside the commercial value, there would be great geopolitical significance to being the first to develop a treatment or vaccine. We will use all the tools we have to safeguard American research.”

“We are going to start ramping up production with the companies involved,” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the federal government’s top expert on infectious diseases, said on NBC this week. “You don’t wait until you get an answer before you start manufacturing.”

Bill Gates calls America's Coronavirus Testing Data "Bogus"

Appearing on CNN Thursday, Bill Gates called America's coronavirus testing data "bogus," in part because "the United States does not make sure you get results in 24 hours."

Testing in the U.S. remains a long and complicated task, and it can take several days before people are told whether they have tested positive or negative for COVID-19.

"If you get your test results within 24 hours so you can act on it, then let's count it," Gates said, adding that people were most infectious within the first three to four days after infection and might continue to interact with others and spread the virus until they have definitive results. "What's the point of the test?" he said. "That's your period of greatest infectiousness."

Gates added that residents of low-income neighborhoods had lesser access to testing facilities and were not prioritized, despite indications that the virus has taken a disproportionate toll on marginalized communities.

"Our system fails to have the prioritization that would give us an accurate picture of what's going on," he said.

While America is now testing about 200,000 people a day, the [Business Insider] article cites experts from Harvard University who believe 20 million tests a day are what's needed to fully "remobilize the economy."

Gates told The Financial Times that his foundation, which has an endowment of more than $40 billion (AUD$62b), was prepared to put all of its resources toward fighting the virus, even if it meant efforts to combat other deadly diseases would suffer as a result.

Looking back at mid-term messaging dynamics. One lesson: let's not let it happen again.

The creator of the meme, "Jobs Not Mobs," who goes by the pen name “Bryan Machiavelli,” told The New York Times he charges $200 an hour for his “memetic warfare consulting” services.

Users on Reddit and Twitter continued to push the slogan, as popular pages on Facebook began to pick it up. The transfer of a message across social networks is one way a meme like this becomes amplified.

Donald J. Trump tweet:
The Democrats care more about having power than doing what’s right for the country. I need you to vote for JOBS, not mobs!

By Oct. 18, the slogan had spread across the internet.

That evening, Mr. Trump tweeted, simply, “#JobsNotMobs!” Reddit erupted with glee.

#JobsNotMobs had now entered the mainstream.

Mr. Trump returned to the idea, tweeting out the hashtag several more times. It had quickly become a message the Republican Party would carry into the midterm elections.

With this meme, the far-right internet had found an opening for a new Republican talking point, molding it into a compact slogan and seeding it with the most powerful conservatives in the country.

Some who were online could hardly believe their success. “Can you guys believe that we, this domreddit, did this though?” one Reddit user wrote, referring to the r/the_donald forum, inserting an expletive. “Life imitates memes.”

The fact that 2018 was a Wave was real. Just because it didn't work then, doesn't mean that digital media won't roll it out again.

We just need to keep in mind that oppo research will test "issues" from now on to set up FUD.
Fear.Uncertainty.Doubt. FUD setups drive the summer messaging and digital profit.

Not claiming this is the only current dynamic, but just watch -- and not get triggered by -- what trends on Twitter, then hits right wing media, then hits TV.

This year, previous election messaging timelines are gone. This pandemic means the General Election has begun even before the convention.

Joe Biden: No It Is Not True; It Never Never Happened

Opening The Country Council Will Build An Iron Curtain Around The Country

Earlier this month, the White House named nearly 200 corporate executives and business leaders to its so-called “Great American Economic Revival Industry Groups”―which Trump has called the “Opening the Country” council―in 17 separate areas ranging from agriculture and banking to sports and “thought leaders.”

“These bipartisan groups of American leaders will work together with the White House to chart the path forward toward a future of unparalleled American prosperity,” Trump said in a statement accompanying the April 14 announcement.

“The health and wealth of America is the primary goal, and these groups will produce a more independent, self-sufficient, and resilient Nation.”

The 12-member energy panel includes eight oil and gas executives who have collectively made more than $4.2 million in political contributions since Trump launched his presidential bid in June 2015, according to an analysis from the watchdog group Documented.

The vast majority of that total went to Republican candidates and Political Action Committees...

The Trump Victory Committee, a joint fundraising entity of Trump and the Republican National Committee, took in $619,400 from the oil and gas representatives on the new council―more than any other entity. America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC, received $500,000, while the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee raked in $410,900 and $407,400, respectively.

The remaining money―approximately $29,000 of the more than $4.2 million―went to a handful of Democratic candidates and committees.

The energy group includes no one from the renewable energy world. Instead, Trump turned to some familiar allies with deep pockets in an industry that he and his team have worked hard to lift up. The task force includes fracking mogul Harold Hamm, the billionaire executive chairman of Continental Resources whom Trump reportedly considered nominating as energy secretary, and John Hess, the CEO of New York City-based oil and gas producer Hess Corporation who donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration.

Hamm has contributed more than $1.7 million to Republicans since June 2016, including a $500,000 contribution to America First Action in January 2018, Documented’s analysis found. Hess gave approximately $1.7 to Republicans, not including the inauguration contributions.

The other oil and gas representatives on the White House economic council made the following political contributions since June 2016:
ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance ($264,580);
Chevron Corporation CEO Mike Wirth ($171,307);
ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods ($123,556);
Valero chairman and CEO Joe Gorder ($98,300);
Occidental Petroleum Corporation President and CEO Vicki Hollub ($81,652); and
Kinder Morgan, Inc. CEO Steven Kean ($50,550).

The other four members of the council’s energy panel are
Tom Fanning, CEO of utility giant Southern Company;
Mark Crosswhite, CEO of Alabama Power Company, one of four utilities operated by Southern Company;
Rich Nolan, CEO of the National Mining Association, a mining industry trade group; and
Ross Perot Jr., chairman of Texas-based real estate development and investment companies The Perot Group and Hillwood.

Until their systems are back up and running, Americans will be treated like mushrooms.

Trump's approach: establish a fascist government of monopolies.

Our taxation is their socialism. Their corporation plantation is austerity capitalism for us.

Over the plantation gate reads: "Good luck with your nation of laws."
