We Know W.E.B. DuBois's 'Double Consciousness. Whites' Dueling Double Consciousness Is Another Thing

Notes from How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi

1.
David Hume declared that all races are created unequal.
John Calhoun believed this. Thus he and his southern cohorts called slavery an ‘institution.’

Thomas Jefferson declared that all men are created equal, but never made the antiracist declaration that all racial groups are equals.
All he actually said was, “ it would be hazardous to affirm that, equally cultivated for a few generations,” the Negro “would not become” equal.

Humes’ declaration justifies segregationist ideas that a racial group is permanently inferior.
Jefferson’s declaration justifies assimilationist ideas that a racial group is temporarily inferior.

2.
In America, these two ideas have dueled within White consciousness, as revealed by our political and social history.

Since segregationists posit the incapability of a racial group to be civilized and developed, segregationist policies are geared toward segregating, enslaving, incarcerating, deporting, and killing, maligning and blaming the racialized body.
Since antiracists posit that racial groups are already civilized, antiracist policies are geared toward reducing racial inequities and creating equal opportunity for racialized bodies.

White people have generally advocated for both assimilationist and segregationist policies.
POC have generally advocated for both antiracist and assimilationist policies.

As W.E.B. DuBois said, the “history of the American Negro is the history of this strife”
— between the assimilationist and the antiracist,
— between mass civlizing and mass equalizing.
To DuBois, Kendi and POC, this dueling consciousness yielded strife between Black pride and yearning to be White. Kendi says that his own assimilationist ideas stopped him from noticing the racist policies rising high during Reagan’s drug war.

The dueling White consciousness has, from its relative position of power, shaped the struggle within Black consciousness. Black people have been encouraged by an undeniable White history of antiracist progress; they have also, as DuBois said, desired to remain Negro, discouraged by undeniable racist progress, from police violence to voter suppression to the 20th Cent. formation of racial hate groups like neonazis and the KKK.

3.
The historical double consciousness duels have produced
— the undeniable history of antiracist progress,
— the undeniable history of racist progress.
Before and after the Civil War, civil rights movement, and the first Black presidency, the White consciousness duels define the American body and at the same time, segregate the Black body and then instruct the Black body to assimilate.
The White body rejects the Black body attempts to assimilate into the American body — and history and consciousness duel anew.
Thus, the Black body in turn experiences the same duel.

But there is a way to get free.

To be an antiracist is to emancipate oneself from the dueling consciousness.
To be antiracist is to conquer the assimilationist consciousness and the segregationist consciousness. It means that White body no longer presents itself as the historical or present American body; and that the Black body no longer strives to be the American body,
knowing there is no such thing as the American body, only American bodies, racialized by power.

Arrested in Capitol Riot: Organized Militants and a Horde of Radicals

Source: New York Times

In the weeks since the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, federal prosecutors have announced criminal charges against more than 175 people — less than a quarter of those involved in the melee, but enough to provide a rough portrait of the mob and the sprawling investigation into its actions.

At least 21 of those charged so far had ties to militant groups and militias, according to court documents and other records. At least 22 said they were current or former members of the military. More than a dozen were clear supporters of the conspiracy theory QAnon. But a majority expressed few organizing principles, outside a fervent belief in the false assertion that President Donald J. Trump had won re-election.

The accused came from at least 39 states, as far away as Hawaii. At least three were state or local officials, and three were police officers. Some were business owners; others were unemployed or made their living as conservative social media personalities. Many made comments alluding to revolution and violence, while others said the protests had been largely peaceful.

A New York Times review of federal cases through the end of January suggests that many of those in the horde were likely disorganized, but some groups and individuals came to the events of Jan. 6 trained and prepared for battle. The early charges set the stage for those to come as the Justice Department promises to prosecute even those accused of misdemeanor trespass and also devotes resources to more serious crimes, like conspiracy and homicide.

Governor Cuomo Briefing February 2 2021

NEW: state vaccine allocations are going to increase AGAIN, from 16% to 20% with a three week advance notice.

Direct pharmacy program with the federal govt is to be implemented, to supply 10% of the federal vaccine stock to private pharmacy networks. Why? Because they’re already good flu shot distributors nationwide. So that’s an even greater increase in vaccine supply across every state.

All federal govt allocations come in two doses for both Pfizer and Moderna, with reserves held for the second dose.

To expand vaccinations right now, one suggestion is that states use current second dose reserves as first doses, but there is no word from the government about that.

“ I don’t have enough” is the national problem.

Black history is American history. From awareness to dismantling.

Biden knows: dismantling is now America's goal.

From Ibram X. Kendi's How To Be An Antiracist

Racist ideas have defined our society from its beginning and can feel so natural and obvious as to be banal, but antiracist ideas remain difficult to comprehend in part because they go against the flow of this country's history. As Audre Lorde said in 1980:

We have all been programmed to respond to the human differences between us with fear and loathing and to handle that difference in one of three ways: ignore it, and if that is not ossible, copy it if we think it is dominant, or destroy it if we think it is subordinate. But we have no patterns for relating across our human differences as equals.

#1 To be an antiracist is a radical choice in the face of this history, requiring a radical reorientation of our consciousness.

Governor Cuomo Briefing February 1 2021

New: state road shutdowns because snowplows cannot keep roads clear with 2 inches/hour snowfalls; other transportation shutdowns are coming.

The vaccine shortage is a national problem, but as soon as the Biden administration delivers, it will be distributed.

Variants of interest are unknown; their spread is determined by what people do.

Wisconsin pharmacist who destroyed more than 500 vaccine doses believes Earth is flat, FBI says

Source: Washington Post

For months, Steven Brandenburg, the overnight pharmacist at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, Wis., had said he thought the vaccine would harm people, make them infertile and implant them with microchips.

Now, federal authorities say his belief in debunked claims went beyond the vaccine. The pharmacist, who has agreed to plead guilty to charges of attempting to spoil the vaccine, also believes the Earth is flat and that the sky is not real, according to court documents.

His beliefs were revealed in court after a search of Brandenburg’s phone, computer and hard drive by the FBI. The documents include interviews with Brandenburg and Aurora Medical Center pharmacy technician Sarah Sticker, who told authorities she discovered the unrefrigerated doses of the Moderna vaccine at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 26. The unsealed records were first reported by the Daily Beast.

Who Knew Flat Earthers Are Not Just About Flat Earth -- Algorithms Have In-The-Weeds Consequences

More puzzle pieces about the nice people who call us the enemy.

The warmup proof of earth curvature is good, but what comes after 16:55 is the real point about Flat Earthers: their range of syncretic knowledge networks of "reality" -- esoteric references to religion, powers and systems across centuries, divinity, the enemy trying to suppress 'truth' -- that make Flat Earthers a force that cannot be ignored in our current situation.

Flat Earthers bled to QAnon to storm patriots to 'awakening' followers of Trump, to the 'trust the plan' self-radicalizing world where millions of anti-maskers and big tent conspiracy believers still live.
If this seems too long, here are suggested points of interest. 31:00, 37:40, 44:00, 45:00, 57:50

Here I thought that Flat Earthers were just a nutty troll group.

Day 335

Facts change, and covid facts change dramatically, notably "variants of interest."

The Democratic administration should consider in its covid relief allocations, the historical givers and takers state and local taxes (SALT):

Top 5 Donor States
1. New York
2. New Jersey
3. Massachusetts
4. California
5. Connecticut

Top 5 Receiver States
1. Virginia
2. Kentucky
3. Florida
4. Maryland
5. Ohio

Re nursing homes covid issues -- across the country, state reporting on nursing homes is spotty at best, with 9 states having no data. Which is due to for-profit nursing homes not cooperating with state public health entities. https://www.leadingageny.org/linkservid/28BC5086-F1AD-8EB8-EA3B26AE93ECEFC0/showMeta/0/
