A man says his stepmom locked him in a room for decades. He escaped by setting a fire

After firefighters responded to a fire at a Connecticut home last month, one of its occupants revealed that they hadn't only rescued him from the burning house — but from two decades of captivity.

The 32-year-old man, who has not been publicly named, is accusing his stepmother of keeping him locked inside a room in their Waterbury home — with minimal food and water, and no access to medical care, dental care or a bathroom — from the time he was approximately 11 years old.

Later, while receiving medical treatment, he told authorities that he had used hand sanitizer, printer paper and a lighter to set the fire in his upstairs bedroom to escape.

"I wanted my freedom," he told first responders, according to the Waterbury Police Department.

Waterbury police announced Wednesday that an investigation by their major crimes unit, in collaboration with the Waterbury State's Attorney's Office, determined that the victim "had been held in captivity for over 20 years, enduring prolonged abuse, starvation, severe neglect, and inhumane treatment."

"The suffering this victim endured for over 20 years is both heartbreaking and unimaginable," Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said in a statement, crediting law enforcement with making sure "the perpetrator is held fully accountable for these horrific crimes."

Police said they arrested the man's stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, on Wednesday on charges of assault, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons and reckless endangerment.

Sullivan's stepson was rescued from the Feb. 17 blaze "in a severely emaciated condition," according to police.

Medical records show he weighed just 68.7 pounds, which, at his height of 5 feet 9 inches, is considered life-threatening, according to a police affidavit and arrest warrant that was filed in state superior court and obtained by NPR.

ICE Detains Canadian Woman and 'Wraps Her in Chains'

A Canadian woman was put in chains and detained by ICE in an “inhumane” facility after trying to get her new visa, it was revealed Wednesday.

Jasmine Mooney, 35, was working in Los Angeles for the health tonic beverage company she co-founded. But her visa was revoked while she was visiting home in Vancouver, British Columbia. She learned that she had lost legal status when she attempted to board a flight in Vancouver and was refused entry to the U.S. Vancouver has U.S. border agents stationed at the airport.

“They told me I was unprofessional because I didn’t have a proper letterhead on my paperwork,” Mooney told KGTV. She was told to to go to a U.S. consulate to apply for legal status to work in the country again.

Desperate to return to LA, she decided to try her luck at getting a new visa at a southern border crossing. So on Monday she traveled to San Ysidro, the U.S.-Mexico border crossing near San Diego county, armed with her new job offer and visa paperwork. San Ysidro is where she had been granted her first visa and where her first attorney told her to go.
(snip)
At San Ysidro, instead of telling Mooney to leave, Customs and Border Patrol officers refused to let her turn back to Mexico and detained her. She said she was kept in a cold room by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). She was then arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who threw her into San Diego’s Otay Mesa Detention Center.

Measles is unlike other viruses: What to know about long-term complications

Measles isn’t just a rash and a fever.

The disease outbreak in West Texas that continues to grow has sent 29 people, most of them small children, to the hospital. Two people have died, including a 6-year-old child.

It’s not yet known how many people have gotten sick in the outbreak — there are at least 223 confirmed cases, but experts believe hundreds more people may have been infected since late January. As public health officials try to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus, some experts are worried about longer-term complications.

Measles is unlike other childhood viruses that come and go. In severe cases it can cause pneumonia. About 1 in 1,000 patients develops encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, and there are 1 or 2 deaths per 1,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The virus can wipe out the immune system, a complication called “immune amnesia.”

Which is why for the rest of one year, my brothers and I got everything that came down the pike, including, in very short order, rubella, mumps, and strep (we'd already had chicken pox, or we would have got that too!)

Holding the land, losing the future

On a stretch of farmland in Shenandoah County, Sue Polk’s family is never far away.

Her son, his wife, her daughter and her son-in-law all live on the property, each couple in their own home, working together to keep the farming operation running. They share the burdens of running a small farm — milking nearly 200 cows, farming 750 acres and operating two poultry houses — but they also share its rewards, chief among them the close-knit bond that comes from building something together.

“Nobody’s gonna get rich around here, but they all come to my house every day for lunch, and they sit in here and they laugh,” Polk said. “They all get along good, and well, I hope it’s a future for them.”

But Polk, soon to be 69, and her husband, Harry Polk, turning 70, worry that future isn’t viable.

Their milking parlor, built in 1977, is outdated. Milking the herd takes four hours in the morning and four more in the evening. A new facility could cut that time in half — but would cost at least $1 million, an amount far out of reach without financial assistance. Even if they could justify the cost, expansion would require more cows, more feed and more land.

“Land is hard to find,” Polk said. “It’s hard to rent. Especially close by.”

The number of dairy farms in the region has plummeted. Polk estimates there may be fewer than five left as rising costs, land development pressures and the dominance of large-scale dairy operations make it harder for small farms to survive.

And yet, just the other day, the orange slime advocated a "return to subsistence farming". As if he knew what that means......

JD Vance Slammed by His Own Cousin Who Fought in Ukraine

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have refashioned the United States into “Vladimir Putin’s useful idiots,” the VP’s cousin alleged in the wake of the Trump administration’s recent abandonment of military and intelligence support for Ukraine.

Nate Vance, a Texan who said he volunteered for three years fighting on the front lines against Russia’s Putin-ordered invasion of its neighbor, told Le Figaro in an interview published Sunday that he is “disappointed” in his “good” and “intelligent” cousin over the administration’s sudden and abrasive turn away from supporting America’s war-torn ally.

JD Vance was widely seen as the instigator of a blowup with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office earlier this month during which he and Trump berated their counterpart for allegedly not thanking them enough for U.S. military support.

In the days following the shocking exchange, Trump suspended military aid and intelligence sharing to Kyiv. The vice president’s cousin blasted the decision.

“When [JD Vance] criticized aid to Ukraine, I thought it was because he needed to appeal to his electorate, that it was part of the political game,” Nate Vance told Le Figaro. “But what they did to Zelensky was an ambush of absolute dishonesty.”

You know he's shady when his own cousin slices and dices him in the media. Too bad it was the French media and not US though.

Republican Senator Accused of Fling With Sexting-Mad General

Sen. Joni Ernst was accused Tuesday of having relationships with two military officials—one of them an Air Force general demoted after being busted sexting women on Capitol Hill.

Ernst, a 54-year-old Republican from Iowa, was named as one of the retired Maj. Gen. Christopher Finerty’s conquests in a ProPublica report, which cited two sources familiar with a military probe into his conduct.

Word of Finerty’s promiscuity first emerged in January when a 2023 report by the Air Force’s inspector general became public. The report found Finerty had violated military law by having “sexual, inappropriate, or unprofessional relationships” with multiple women on Capitol Hill. He was demoted and ultimately retired in November.

The report circulated in the press but the names of Finerty’s alleged lovers were redacted.

This makes it impossible to tell which, if any, of the report’s sordid details pertain to Ernst, ProPublica reported. Still, having any sort of “romantic relationship” with a de facto lobbyist—as Finerty has been described as being—has raised ethical concerns.

One source in the Air Force described the relationship to ProPublica as being “so sleazy” because the branch likely earned favor in Congress as a result.

Ernst, herself a combat veteran, is one of the most influential legislators on military matters. She serves on the Senate’s Armed Services Committee, which oversees the Pentagon, and has an especially influential role in curating its annual budget.

Marco Rubio's Face Tells the Story as Trump Humiliates Him

Donald Trump singled out Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the person “to blame if anything goes wrong” during his speech to Congress—and Rubio’s shocked reaction was quickly spotted online.

Trump made the jab as he spoke about trying to regain ownership of the Panama Canal, a move which would cause diplomatic shockwaves if it ever really happened.

It was a public taste of the power Trump tries to hold over his cabinet, and came days after Rubio became a meme as he appeared to try to sink into the Oval Office coach as Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated Ukraine’s Volodomyr Zelensky.

“The Panama Canal was built by Americans for Americans, not for others. But others could use it. But it was built at tremendous cost of American blood and treasure,” Trump said. “It was given away by the Carter administration for one dollar. But that agreement has been violated very severely. We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.”

“And we have Marco Rubio in charge. Good luck, Marco. Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong,” Trump said, chuckling.

Musk Goon Arrives at FAA With Chilling Warning for Staff

One of Elon Musk’s goons has infiltrated the Federal Aviation Administration and reportedly issued a chilling warning to its staffers on day one.

Ted Malaska, a Department of Government Efficiency volunteer, told FAA employees anyone who impeded his work would be reported to Musk and “risked losing their jobs,” sources told Bloomberg.

Malaska, 47, is a temporary special government employee, allowing him to work for DOGE while keeping his gig as a top engineer at Musk’s SpaceX aerospace company.

There have been no reports of FAA firings tied to clashes with Malaska, nor have any clashes been reported, but sources told Bloomberg the engineer made clear “anyone who impeded progress” will be reported to the very top of DOGE’s chain of command.

Malaska has not wiped his social media and gone into hiding like others in DOGE. Instead, he has posted enthusiastically to X about his work and addressed criticisms of his mission.

“I love how none (sic) technical media is questioning my work at the @FAANews,” he wrote on Feb. 26. “I challenge anyone to question the honesty and my technical integrity on this matter. I am working without biases for the safety of people that fly.”

US natalist conference to host race-science promoters and eugenicists

A natalist conference featuring speakers including self-described eugenicists and promoters of race science, apparently including the man behind a previously pseudonymous race-science influencer account, and the founder of a startup offering IQ screening for IVF embryos, will be held at a hotel and conference venue operated by the public University of Texas, Austin.

Details of the conference have emerged as a prominent supporter of pro-natalist positions, the tech billionaire Elon Musk, lays waste US government agencies under the banner of his “Doge” initiative, with the blessing of Donald Trump.

Natalism in its current often rightwing iteration encourages high birth rates, and Musk has been a vocal proponent. He also maintains a large compound home near Austin, where reportedly he plans to house some of his children and two of their mothers.

The Natal conference website embeds a Musk post on X, reading: “If birth rates continue to plummet, human civilization will end.” Musk, who reportedly has at least 13 children by four mothers, was in recent days confronted on X by musician Grimes and the rightwing influencer Ashley St Clair over his alleged neglect of the children he has fathered with them.

The conference, scheduled for 28-29 March, is being organized by Kevin Dolan, who the Guardian identified in 2021 as the person behind a Twitter account that was prominent in the far-right “DezNat” movement, and last year as the organizer of the first conference. It is the second time the conference has been held, and once again, the speakers roster runs from provocateurs who emerged from the “fascist fitness scene” to practitioners of “liberal eugenics”.
