Alabama military base is first in the U.S. to require vaccination proof amid rising covid-19 rates
Source: Washington Post
An Alabama military base is taking increased actions to combat the ongoing prevalence of coronavirus infections, authorizing leaders to ask for proof of vaccination of service members not wearing a mask while on duty. It is the first military base in the continental United States to allow leaders to check the vaccination status of those in uniform.
The order issued Tuesday by Maj. Gen. David Francis, commanding general of Fort Rucker, states that unmasked uniformed personnel must be prepared to show proof of vaccination when on the base.
Due to the rising rates in the counties around us and some on Fort Rucker, were now implementing G.O. number 12, Francis said in a video posted July 12 on Fort Ruckers official Facebook page, referring to the general order issued to Fort Rucker personnel. The big difference is going to be that if you are not wearing a mask, the leadership will be able to ask you, ask soldiers, to prove that theyve been vaccinated by showing their vaccination card.

Feds to create database for Capitol riot prosecutions
The Justice Department has agreed to pay $6.1 million to a technology contractor to create a massive database of videos, photographs, documents and social media posts related to the Capitol riot as part of the process of turning relevant evidence over to defense attorneys for the more than 500 people facing criminal charges in the Jan. 6 events, according to a court filing and government records.
To take on the daunting task, the federal government has turned to Deloitte Financial Advisory Services, a firm prosecutors called a litigation support vendor with extensive experience providing complex litigation technology services.

Studies Show Vaccines Are Effective Against Delta Variant
Israel reported that the Pfizer vaccine was 64 percent effective against the Delta variant, even as other studies suggest a higher rate. All of the research so far indicates that vaccines help prevent hospitalization.
In Britain, researchers reported in May that two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine had an effectiveness of 88 percent protecting against symptomatic disease from Delta. A June study from Scotland concluded that the vaccine was 79 percent effective against the variant. On Saturday, a team of researchers in Canada pegged its effectiveness at 87 percent.
And on Monday, Israels Ministry of Health announced that the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 64 percent
Although the range of these numbers may seem confusing, vaccine experts say it should be expected, because its hard for a single study to accurately pinpoint the effectiveness of a vaccine. But once vaccines hit the real world, it becomes much harder to measure their effectiveness. Scientists can no longer control who receives a vaccine and who does not. If they compare a group of vaccinated people with a group of unvaccinated people, other differences between the groups could influence their risks of getting sick.

Republicans want to make America more like China
Two powerful countries, two important anniversaries. On Thursday, July 1, the Chinese Communist Party celebrated 100 years since its founding. On Sunday, July 4, the United States celebrated 245 years since the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The differences between these two political milestones are stark and remind me of why Im lucky to be an American.
The Declaration of Independence is rooted in the liberal belief that all individuals are created equal and that they possess unalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. By contrast, in Chinese President Xi Jinpings bombastic oration on Thursday, there was no mention of individual rights. It was all about collective entities the Chinese nation, the Chinese people, the Chinese Communist Party. Xi told his subjects to uphold the firm leadership of the Party because Chinas success hinges on the Party.

A question about the tos, in relation to
.... Alerting on a post. I thought advocating violence, such as calling for the "extermination" of our political opponents, is against the tos. No maybe I'm being too much of a internet lawyer here, but the tos does not explicitly prohibit this. If I want to alert against such a post, which category do I select? Or is advocating violence OK here as long as it is not directed towards Democrats?
What to know about Rise of the Moors, an armed group that says it's not subject to U.S. law
Washington Post, July 4, 2021 at 1:07 a.m. EDT
Eleven people have been arrested and are expected to appear in court next week to face firearms charges. They have been identified as members of Rise of the Moors, a Moorish sovereign citizens group whose adherents say they are part of their own sovereign nation and therefore are not subject to any U.S. law.
According to the groups website, Rise of the Moors is based in Pawtucket, R.I., and is one of 25 active anti-government sovereign-citizen groups identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2020. While the number of Rise of the Moors members is unclear, the groups Facebook page had more than 1,000 followers Saturday. On Instagram, it had more than 5,000 followers, and the groups YouTube channel had more than a million views...

FBI launches flurry of arrests over attacks on journalists during Capitol riot
Source: Washington Post, July 3, 2021 at 6:00 a.m. EDT
Nearly six months after the U.S. Capitol riot, the Justice Department has begun arresting a new category of alleged criminals those who attacked reporters or damaged their equipment as journalists documented the violence perpetrated by supporters of President Donald Trump.
Shane Jason Woods of Illinois was charged with engaging in violence on the Capitol grounds Jan. 6, as well as assaulting a law enforcement officer. Authorities say Woods was caught on video knocking down a cameraman.
FBI agents arrested a Covington, Va., man for allegedly destroying journalists equipment. Joshua Dillon Haynes was charged with smashing their gear outside the Capitol and bragging about it in a text to a friend.
Court papers filed in the attacks on media cases suggest that charging someone with assaulting a journalist or vandalizing their equipment is a bit more complex than other rioting charges. There is no federal law specifically against attacking a journalist, so the Justice Department has charged those who went after reporters or their gear on Jan. 6 with committing violence in the restricted grounds of the Capitol, or destroying property on the Capitol grounds. More such arrests are expected, according to officials.
