Beauty business goes Big Brother: CIA funding skin cream that can harvest your DNA

he CIA invested in a cosmetic company to help develop a skin cream that can be used to secretly harvest DNA evidence.

Clearista is marketed as a painless way to erase blemishes and soften skin using only water and a special detergent — but the CIA is interested in the popular skin care product’s potential for gathering information about an individual’s biochemistry, reported The Intercept.

The CEO of Skincential Sciences, the company that makes Clearista, told the website that In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital arm, had invested in research and development of the skin cream — but he’s not sure what the agency intends to do with his company’s work.

“There’s no better identifier than DNA, and we know we can pull out DNA,” said Russ Lebovitz, CEO of Skincential Sciences.

The company has developed a patented technology that removes a thin outer layer of the skin, which reveals unique biomarkers that can be used for a variety of diagnostic tests — including DNA collection.

Cruz Visit To Bronx High School Canceled After Students Threaten Walkout

Students at a Bronx, New York high school said they would stage a walkout rather than stick around for a visit from Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who they called “misogynistic, homophobic, and racist.”

Cruz was slated to visit the Bronx Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy on a Wednesday campaign stop, but the event was cancelled after students sent a letter outlining their concerns to the school’s principal.

“A group of students will be leaving during 4th period, as act of civil disobedience in regards to the arrival of Ted Cruz to BLCPA. We have all considered the consequences of our actions and are willing to accept them,” the letter read. “The presence of Ted Cruz and the ideas he stands for are offensive. His views are against ours and are actively working to harm us, our community, and the people we love.

The CEO of Lighthouse Academies agreed to cancel the visit after receiving the letter, school principal Alix Duggins told students.

“I believe that I would not have been able to get the visit cancelled without your actions,” Duggins said.

Obama 2008 Campaign Ad: "She’ll say anything, and change nothing."

"The Washington Post says Clinton isn’t telling the truth. [...]

"But it was Hillary Clinton, in an interview with Tom Brokaw, who quote 'paid tribute' to Ronald Reagan’s economic and foreign policy. She championed NAFTA –- even though it has cost South Carolina thousands of jobs. And worst of all, it was Hillary Clinton who voted for George Bush’s war in Iraq.

"Hillary Clinton. She’ll say anything, and change nothing. It’s time to turn the page. Paid for by Obama for America."

High Elf, High on Acid, Attacks Woman's BMW With a Sword

http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--1tiS39uF--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/vxv5vqw2fdze2i40cpud.jpg
Portland, Ore. police responded to a 911 call at around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning from a woman who believed her car was under attack by a pirate. But instead of a routine pirate attack—oh, Portland—they discovered an armored man who claimed he was a High Elf.

He was at least half right. Although the man, dressed in chain mail and helmet, and equipped with sword, staff, and shield, wasn't actually an elf, he was definitely high.

Konrad Bass, 30, of Glendale, Ore., told officers he had taken LSD, and also identified himself as a "high-elf engaged in battle with the evil Morgoth." He was cited for criminal mischief and taken to a hospital.

Morgoth, the original dark lord and master of Sauron in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings mythology, has at his command various Balrogs, rivers of fire, and, apparently, BMWs (the official car of the Dark Enemy and sponsor of the last battle).

The car survived the encounter, although police say it was left with several puncture marks.

Nine-Year-Old Reporter Criticized for Breaking News of Town Tragedy

Nine-year-old Hilde Kate Lysiak is the sole journalist of Orange Street News, the only publication devoted exclusively to covering the events of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania (population 5,000). Hilde’s favorite beat to report on is crime, and she’s written extensively about vandalism, drug use, and harassment in Selinsgrove. Regular Orange Street News readers know that Hilde often covers serious subject matter that might seem incongruous with her age, but when the nine-year-old was the first reporter on the scene of a murder in Selinsgrove last weekend, some local residents were scandalized.

Last Saturday afternoon, after hearing rumors that police had finally caught a Selinsgrove vandal she’s written about in the past, Hilde headed down to the police station to get confirmation. Instead, Hilde’s father says, the police chief told her “I’ve got a big story, I’ve gotta go.” Hilde consulted with a source she has in the town (the nine-year-old told The Washington Post “I got a good tip from a source and I was able to confirm it”), and learned the police were investigating a murder on Ninth Street, a few blocks from her house. The first reporter to arrive on the scene, Hilde talked to neighbors then went home to write up a breaking news item which her father, a former reporter for The Daily News, put on the Orange Street News for her. She then went back to Ninth Street and gathered enough information to publish a full story, a video, and photos on the site hours ahead of The Daily Item, a local paper which reports on Selinsgrove as well as the rest of Susquehanna Valley.

Hilde’s father described what happened that day for The Washington Post:

Because she’s the only one doing community news, she’s developed sources who trust her to cover the news. One of her sources contacted her, and she was able to confirm it with law enforcement. She knocked on every door, like she’d seen me do with the Daily News. There were no other reporters there.

No ‘Wicked’ for NC: Composer Stephen Schwartz bans NC shows over HB2

The reaction against North Carolina’s law rolling back LGBT protections continues to spread beyond the business world, where corporations have called for its repeal. Now Broadway’s musical world is flexing its muscle.

This email by Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz began circulating Friday, according to the online theater publication BroadwayWorld.com:

“To my fellow theatre writers and producers: As you no doubt know, the state of North Carolina has recently passed a reprehensible and discriminatory law. I feel that it is very important that any state that passes such a law suffer economic and cultural consequences, partly because it is deserved and partly to discourage other states from following suit.

“Therefore, I and my collaborators are acting to deny the right to any theatre or organization based in North Carolina to produce any of our shows. We have informed our licensing organizations and touring producers of this, and I'm happy to say have met with compliance and approval from them.

Clinton aides unite on FBI legal strategy

Four of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides appear to have adopted an unusual legal strategy, hiring the same ex-Justice Department attorney to represent them in the FBI’s investigation of Clinton's private email server.

Beth Wilkinson, a well-connected former assistant U.S. attorney best known for prosecuting Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, is listed as representing three of Clinton’s top State Department staffers, according to a congressional letter obtained by POLITICO and dated Feb. 10. A fourth Clinton aide, Philippe Reines, is also represented by Wilkinson, according to sources familiar with their representation.
Story Continued Below

The united front suggests they plan to tell investigators the same story — although legal experts say the joint strategy presents its own risks, should the interests of the four aides begin to diverge as the probe moves ahead.

The quartet includes Clinton’s former chief of staff Cheryl Mills, who counseled Clinton politically and legally; deputy chief of staff Jake Sullivan, whom sources say authored a number of emails to Clinton that are now considered “top secret”; Heather Samuelson, Mills’ deputy who initially sorted Clinton’s work-related emails from personal messages that were then deleted; and Reines, who served as Clinton’s spokesman and also used personal email for work purposes at State.

Wilkinson and the four staffers, as well as the Clinton campaign, did not respond to requests for comment.
