Greg Abbott campaigns with raging homophobe Chuck Norris

Anti-gay bigot Chuck Norris is set to endorse Republican Greg Abbott for governor in San Antonio today, the Express-News reports:

Texas-bred actor Chuck Norris, known for his role as TV’s “Walker, Texas Ranger,” will be in San Antonio on Wednesday for a joint appearance with Abbott.

Early voting is underway for the Nov. 4 election as Abbott battles Democrat Wendy Davis for the state’s top office.

With a goal of getting out the vote, Abbott and Norris will be at Casa Rio Restaurant downtown for the midday event, which will also draw Texas GOP Chairman Steve Munisteri, according to Abbott’s campaign.

Two years ago, Norris came out in support of the Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policies, suggesting a conspiracy to overturn them between the Obama administration and BSA board member James Turley.

“Is it a coincidence that a couple of months ago, Obama reversed his position on marriage, extending the union to gay couples, and that Turley just came out of the closet in his position against the BSA’s position?” Norris wrote for Ammoland.com. “Is it a coincidence that in the same few weeks when Turley turned on the BSA with his pro-gay stance, Obama turned on the U.S. military and sent down a decree that the service branches must celebrate “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month”? Is it a coincidence that Turley is in tight cahoots with the White House and that he is the only BSA national board member in 100 years to oppose its pro-traditional family stance?”

In 2011, Norris penned a piece for the American Family Association, an anti-gay hate group, falsely alleging that Obama planned to force military chaplains to perform same-sex weddings. Norris also wrote that, “Secretary Hillary Clinton demonizes other countries’ religious beliefs as an obstacle to radical homosexual rights.” Clinton had recently delivered a speech to the U.N. in which she criticized countries that incarcerate, torture and execute LGBT people.

Ted Cruz Reveals What he’d do if Elected President – And it’s Even Worse Than You Thought

With the midterm elections approaching, Texas senator Ted Cruz penned an editorial in USA Today this week detailing what he’d like a potential Republican-controlled Congress to prioritize in 2015. As you might expect, the list is full of Tea Party staples: repealing Obamacare, cutting taxes, and slashing funding for federal programs. What makes Cruz’s list of Congressional priorities interesting is that it essentially previews what a Cruz 2016 presidential campaign agenda might look like–and it’s not pretty.

As Ted Cruz’s multiple trips to Iowa have suggested, Texas’ junior senator is all-but-confirmed to be running for president in 2016. Though his latest editorial is seemingly a guide for the next Congress, it reads as a list of Cruz’s own personal ambitions. He even references what he believes a newly elected Republican president will do in 2017.

Cruz’s list hits all the talking points he’s perfected over the last two years he’s spent in the Senate running his pre-presidential campaign. He’s big on cutting taxes, arguing for a regressive flat tax to replace all existing taxes. Cruz also wants to abolish the IRS, instead wanting to make taxes “so simple that they could be filled out on a postcard.” If you’re worried about how the government will be able to fund programs that help millions of Americans under a Cruz tax system, don’t be–he also wants to slash government funding for everything, so there won’t be any programs left to fund.

A Cruz presidency would also leave the environment in total disrepair. Cruz’s big suggestion for revitalizing the job market is to get rid of all environmental regulations and open up more jobs in fossil fuel for everyone. He is in favor of building the Keystone XL pipeline, and wants to open up even more protected land for oil exploration. Additionally, Cruz is a proponent of fracking, which he calls “innovative energy technology,” and he wants to stop fracking from being “handcuffed by the federal government.” And of course, he also wants to get rid of regulations on coal production, too.

Judge in Adrian Peterson child abuse case will remain

A judge has denied a motion by prosecutors to remove a Montgomery County judge from the child abuse case of NFL star Adrian Peterson.

Retired Fort Worth Judge Jeff Walker handed down the ruling on Wednesday afternoon, following a hearing on the state's motion to have 9th State District Judge Kelly Case recused from the case for alleged bias against prosecutors.

Peterson's defense attorney, Rusty Hardin, raised multiple objections to prosecutors' efforts to introduce testimony about past actions by Case.

"Sometimes you can't look at this in a vacuum," First Assistant District Attorney Phil Grant said. "You have to look at a history of the judge's actions."

Two dead in murder-suicide at Ben Taub Hospital (Houston)

Two employees at the pharmacy at Ben Taub General Hospital are dead after an apparent murder-suicide, officials said.

The first call was made to police just after 2:15 p.m.

Witnesses said a man shot a woman, then turned the gun on himself, said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon. They were pronounced dead a short time later.

Both worked at the pharmacy, but their roles were uncertain. One may have been a pharmacy technician and the other a clerk, Cannon said.

Texas athletic director: With new rules, Longhorns would pay each player $10,000

WASHINGTON — The University of Texas could spend nearly $6 million a year to comply with a string of recent legal rulings requiring colleges to be more generous to their scholarship athletes.

That won’t break the bank, Athletic Director Steve Patterson said Tuesday at a forum on the fast-changing business of college sports. But even rich programs like UT’s will be forced to make tough choices in the future if momentum in the courts continues to push colleges to treat their players like employees or semi-pros, he said.

Chris Plonsky, director for women’s sports at Texas, said the school already employs 350 workers to coach and care for the students who play in Austin. The money for all of those jobs, she said, comes from just two sports, football and men’s basketball.

“If we begin to {further} remunerate the participants, that’s going to break that model,” Plonsky said.

Proposed routes for Dallas-Houston high-speed rail revealed

Texans got their first glimpses Tuesday of the potential routes a proposed bullet train could take from Dallas to Houston.

The 240-mile project, which could be the first high-speed rail line in America, is expected to get people between the two cities in 90 minutes. If funding is secured and federal approval granted, the train could be running by 2021.

A public meeting about the project in Dallas also unveiled the potential sites for the line’s end points. Developer Texas Central Railway identified three in Dallas: around the intersection of Interstates 20 and 45, near the intersection of I-45 and Loop 12, and near the southwest corner of downtown Dallas.

That downtown station would make it easier for Texas Central to achieve a chief goal for the project: tying in to existing public transit at both end points. Dallas City Council members Lee Kleinman and Vonciel Jones Hill lobbied for Union Station to serve as the North Texas terminus. Union Station serves two Dallas Area Rapid Transit light-rail lines, an Amtrak line and the TRE passenger train that connects Dallas and Fort Worth.

WATCH: Jonathan Saenz says his lesbian ex-wife shouldn’t have been allowed to divorce him so easily

Back in August I reported that the ex-wife of anti-gay leader Jonathan Saenz left him for a woman.

Before publishing my story, I contacted both Saenz, who serves as president of Texas Values, and his attorney to give them a chance to comment, but they chose not to.

Last month, Saenz publicly addressed the story during a panel on same-sex marriage at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Moderator Emily Ramshaw asked Saenz whether his wife’s decision to leave him for a woman has motivated his anti-gay advocacy.

Houston Riverside Hospital CEO Convicted of Medicare/Medicaid Fraud that Siphoned $158 Million

Earnest Gibson III, Riverside's General Hospital's CEO of more than 30 years, was convicted Monday of conspiring to buy and sell patients in a Medicare and Medicaid scam that siphoned $158 million from government coffers.

Also convicted and awaiting sentencing are his son Earnest Gibson IV, Riverside auditor Regina Askew and Robert Crane, a shuttle driver. Federal prosecutors stated in trial that Crane admitted to an investigating officer he was in the business of referring clients to Riverside's drug and mental health treatment program in return for cash, and then Askew would furnish the paperwork to cover up any wrongdoing. Investigators said inconsistencies in the hospital's books proved that so-called hourly marketers were really headhunters paid a flat rate for every patient they enrolled at Riverside.

There was less evidence to pinpoint the exact role of the Gibsons, who worked higher on the administrative chain. Defense attorneys claimed that both men were the victims of slander by state witnesses who stood to reduce their own prison sentences by snitching on whomever was most convenient as a scapegoat. Prosecutors argued that because of the extreme scope of the scheme, which involved billing Medicare for imaginary doctor visits to absent patients over a span of many years, the hospital's top administrators had to have suspected.

The convictions come at a time when the future of the hospital itself is unclear. A historic Third Ward institution, Riverside had run one of the largest drug recovery programs in the state before federal investigators cracked down in 2012. Since then, the once-sprawling hospital system has lost all its government funding, reducing its treatment offerings to a single campus.

Hacker group Anonymous releases video alleging South Texas corruption

More South Texas officials will be arrested for corruption following Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño's guilty plea in April to federal money laundering charges, members from the worldwide "hacktivist" group Anonymous claim in a YouTube video.

The video, which has nearly 100,000 views since being published Friday, shows a person in a mask with computer-generated audio alleging that several Hidalgo County officials, ranging from county commissioners and school district officials, are involved in money laundering related to Mexican drug cartel activity in the region.

"It's your job to voice out the corrupted officials if you wish to still be living in a safe community," the person says in the video, which is at the end of the gallery above.

The person adds, "If you guys don't voice your opinions and support the activists and candidates that are battling these hideous officials, you will soon see martial law, DPS checkpoints, military movement in effect due to the high level of corruption and insecurity across the whole border."
