TexasTowelie's JournalTexas A&M targets Washington brewer over '12th Man' trademark infringement
Plans for a Seattle Seahawks Superbowl celebration with 12th Man beer fell flat after Texas A&M lawyers intervened to protect their trademark.
A family-owned brewery in Bothell, Wash. planned to sell "12th Man Skittles IPA" on Superbowl weekend but canceled the plans after receiving a cease-and-desist notice from A&M, which has trademarked the phrase. A&M lawyers actively police unlicensed uses of the trademark, which have increased with the Seahawks' run to the Super Bowl.
Bothell is a town of about 34,000 located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle. The brewery is operated by Jim Jamison and his family, who have full-time jobs but run the business on the side from property in a residential area. It's only open on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
The 12th Man Skittles IPA was thought up somewhat last minute by Jamison as a way to celebrate the Seahawks' 12th man tradition and star running back Marshawn Lynch's affinity for the candy. He brewed 5.6 gallons of the beer, which isn't even a full batch, with home brew equipment.

Up With Steve Kornacki: New Jersey/Port Authority/Christie discussion thread
On in a minute, let's see the scoop that Steve is about to reveal!
In 1995, Stockman admitted jail time, felony charge. Today he denies that, files libel lawsuit.
WASHINGTON Tonight, Rep. Steve Stockman accused a group that supports Sen. John Cornyn of lying about him, by asserting that he had been jailed more than once and was charged with a felony.
That is strange, because Stockman has admitted to these facts, several times.
I may have been in jail a couple of times, two or three times, he told this newspaper (referring to the Houston Chronicle).

On Friday, Stockman, R-Clear Lake, announced that he has filed a libel lawsuit in Houston against Texans for a Conservative Majority, a political action committee funded and run by Cornyn supporters. Its website, ShadyStockman.com, includes a line from a Jan. 15, 2013, Washington Post story: He has been jailed more than once, and was charge with a felony after one such incident when authorities found Valium in his pants.

Texas House education committee told to study school cheating
AUSTIN Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Friday gave legislators their homework for 2014 and an investigation of school cheating such as what happened in El Paso is among the assignments.
Straus, R-San Antonio, released the first round of instructions, or "charges" to House committees. They now will hold hearings and gather information that might be used to craft bills for the legislative session that begins in January 2015.
An investigation of the El Paso Independent School District over the past three years revealed that administrators schemed to keep students from taking 10th grade accountability tests - in some cases by kicking them out of school.
The scandal also showed that the Texas Education Agency, which now is under different leadership, only reluctantly investigated allegations of cheating.

Fewer Social Studies Requirements for Texas Students Worry Advocates
The State Board of Education will make its final decision today on new high school graduation requirements. The changes come after state lawmakers passed a bill last year that reduces the number of required courses to graduate. Among the changes: students only have to take three social studies classes to graduate instead of four.
In the early 1990s, Texas became the first state to require students to take four social studies classes to graduate. The change back to three has some worried that Texas students wont be as prepared for an increasingly global society.
High school students will still have to take US History, a semester of government, and semester of economics to graduate in four years. But, depending on what local school districts decide, many incoming freshmen will be able to choose World Geography or World History, instead of taking both.

Texas State University Professor and Jesse H. Jones Distinguished Chair in Geographic Education Richard Boehm sees things a little differently.
I think its competition for class time and theres been more emphasis on science, math and literacy and something had to give. Something had to give and so what gave was Social Studies curriculum which is probably perceived as less important than science, math and literacy," Boehm says.
