Welcome, Mr. President

Welcome to Texas, Mr. President. We hope you enjoy our big skies and hospitality.

According to the advance memo for your visit to Austin today, you're here to talk about one of our favorite subjects: educating students for high-paying jobs in what used to be called the vocational sector, but which is now anything but shop class.

We know all about that down here in Houston.

We have a problem that a lot of other areas would like to have - a lot of well-paying jobs, but not enough qualified workers to fill them. We understand that nationwide, 2-3 million of these jobs are going begging for that reason. The problem is worthy of attention at your level, sir.

Shell announces plans to build world’s deepest production facility

Royal Dutch Shell plans to build the world’s deepest production facility in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said Wednesday morning.

The Dutch-based company finalized plans for its ultradeep-water project in the Stones field, which is estimated to contain more than 250 million barrels of oil equivalent in recoverable resources.

The Stone field is in 9,500 feet of water and approximately 200 miles offshore, which company officials said it one of the reasons that it selected a floating production system known as floating production, storage, and offloading vessel (FPSO).

“This important investment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to usher in the next generation of deepwater developments,” said John Hollowell, executive Vice President for Deepwater, Shell Upstream Americas.

Perry raises specter of special session over tax relief, water plan

Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday it’s too early to draw a line in the sand about what lawmakers need to do on issues, including tax relief, if they want to keep him from calling a special session when the regular session ends May 27.

Then he kind of did it anyway.

Perry – who early in the session called for $1.8 billion of tax relief, and outlined a plan in April for $1.6 billion in franchise-tax breaks – had this to say when asked whether he has to see the higher number before he’s willing to sign a state budget:

“It’s a little early to be drawing that line in the sand. It should be no surprise that if folks want to go home at the end of this legislative session, send me $1.8 billion worth of tax relief, send me a balanced budget that has no fees – increases for transportation— and $2 billion of infrastructure for water. And everybody can go home and enjoy their summer.“

Travis County DA Lehmberg to be released from jail Thursday

Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg is scheduled to be released from jail Thursday, having finished her sentence early.

She was sentenced to 45 days in jail on April 19 after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated, but Lehmberg was able to serve half of that under a law that gives credit for good behavior, a sheriff spokesman said.

Lehmberg also was sentenced to a $4,000 fine and a 180-day license suspension under a plea agreement.

Travis County sheriff’s deputies arrested Lehmberg, 63, on April 12 after a witness called 911 to report seeing a car driving for about a mile in a bike lane, swerving and veering into oncoming traffic, according to an arrest affidavit.

Dr. Steven Hotze to file suit challenging ‘Obamacare’

Dr. Steven Hotze, founder of the Conservative Republicans of Texas and a leading donor to GOP candidates, said Tuesday that he had filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the Affordable Care Act.

Standing in the Capitol surrounded by almost 30 Republican senators and representatives, Hotze said he believed the health care law is unconstitutional because it:

• Violates the 5th Amendment takings clause by requiring businesses with more than 50 workers to provide health insurance or pay a $2,000-per-employee penalty. The provision amounts to “a massive transfer of wealth away from Texans,” the lawsuit said.

• Violates the Constitution’s origination clause, which requires revenue-raising bills to originate in the U.S. House.

Classy NRA Eventually Bans Target of Obama Bleeding at its Convention, but it was sold for two days

The National Rifle Association eventually asked a vendor at its convention in Houston, Texas to remove a target which resembles Obama from its booth, and the target bleeds. But, the vendor sold its Obama-hating target for two days.

“Zombie Industries, sells a range of three-dimensional “life sized” targets that “bleed when you shoot them.” The Obama likeness has been on display for two days, but was notably absent on Sunday”, Buzzfeed reports.

When asked if the Obama likeness was intentional the worker said, “Let’s just say I gave my Republican father one for Christmas.”

“They are just scared some liberal reporter will come by and start bitching” another booth worker said to men gathered around the booth. “But ya know, he does look very familiar.”

Friday Night Catnip: Fapardokly

Time to break out the catnip for some 60s psychedelic music. Side 2 (starting at 15:40) is really tripping.

BTW, if you have an unsealed copy of this album you could fetch $1,000 for it.

WATCH: Rick Perry obliterates targets in NRA convention video

Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) really likes guns. He made that clear during his brief run at the Republican presidential nomination, and again in the wake of the Newton, Conn., shooting when he accused the "political left" of trying to politicize the tragedy.

But in case there was any doubt, Perry has made that point even more clear with this explosive video that prefaced his speech Friday to the NRA's annual gathering in Houston, Texas. In the video, Perry blows away a row of stationary targets with a semi-automatic assault rifle and then, a chugging guitar riff blaring behind him, strikes an action hero-like pose for the camera.

As the video ended, Perry took the stage, shouting, "Welcome to Texas, ladies and gentlemen."

Guest blogger Ted Nugent says ‘I am the NRA’

“The good guys are back in Houston to celebrate freedom…”

Some 70,000 National Rifle Association members and other freedom enthusiasts are celebrating the NRA’s 142 annual meeting in your fair city that was named after another freedom enthusiast, Sam Houston.

Across Texas and beyond, guns represent freedom every bit as much as our other cherished rights and freedoms such as our constitutional right to freedom of speech.

Without guns there would be no America, no Texas.
