AP source: DHS employee behind racist website

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Homeland Security employee is the operator of a racist website predicting and advocating a race war, a department official said Thursday.

Ayo Kimathi, who is an acquisitions officer for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, operates the site, War on the Horizon, which includes descriptions of an "unavoidable, inevitable clash with the white race." Kimathi is black.

The DHS official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

While many of the postings on Kimathi's site are inflammatory, it was not immediately clear whether they cross the legal threshold into unprotected hate speech, and the posts may not violate DHS policies if he does not curate the website at work or espouse the ideologies in the office.

My 5,000 Post—Catnip Memories (Dial-up Warning)

This is the tail of my hisstory with catnip.


I’ll start from scratch.


When I mewved into adolescence everything seemed purrfect.


I arranged my furst deal…


…and purrchased the best nip out there.


It seemed impawsible for things to get any better.

I was the cool cat that mew how to chill…


…and give manx when I hung out with my girlfriend.


A mew years later, I started dating a playboy bunny.


After the cat was out of the bag...


…things fur going so well…


…that the ice cream man let me run a tabby.


I was feline groovy.


Howeffur, there were some adfurse results.


Was it pawssible that I was seeing things?


Then an alley cat purrsuaded me to buy what turned out to be bunk oregano.


I didn’t want to make that meowstake again so I began a garden…


...and went catatonic guarding the stash.


Then the claw came crashing down.


I tried to purrsuade the officer to let me go.


I categorically denied the charges to no avail.

Police dog dies after Harris deputy leaves him in hot car

K-9 officers at the Harris County Sheriff's Office are mourning the loss of one of their own - a canine that died last week after being accidentally left inside a hot patrol car by its partner.

From all indications, the bomb-sniffing K-9 died from heat exhaustion, said Alan Bernstein, the sheriff's director of public affairs.

"This is a tragic accident," he said. "Our officers have a wonderful bond with these animals. The deputy is grieving, and it is a difficult time for the entire (K-9) Unit."

The deputy, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, arrived home on Aug. 14 and became distracted and he left the dog inside his patrol car.

‘Big Brother’ Texan not only bigoted, but a gutless bore

“Big Brother” has become an even bigger bore.

Texas State University student Aaryn Gries may be a bigot, but she had the chance to at least redeem herself as a strong player of the game.

For a minute, Gries entertained a move that would win her favor amid “Big Brother” fans, increase her chances of winning the $500,000 and, best of all, liven up the show for the yawning viewer.

Gries considered replacing eviction candidate Elissa Slater – who won the veto competition and saved herself from the block — with Amanda Zuckerman, the house bully who has been the mastermind behind every boot for weeks.

Buy your own piece of Medicare fraud--Scooter Store office furniture up for sale

Furniture and office equipment belonging to The Scooter Store will go on the auction block next month.

Items to be auctioned include more than 1,000 cubicles, computers, cabinets, tables, chairs and assorted throw pillows, among other assets.

The bankrupt Scooter Store, a provider of power wheelchairs and scooters, recently downsized to smaller offices and no longer needs the excess equipment.

The company contacted a couple of parties to solicit interest in the assets, but concluded that the bids would result in about $50,000 in net proceeds for the bankruptcy estate, according to a court filing this week.

Judge will decide Friday whether to uphold contempt charge against Dallas County DA Craig Watkins

A judge will decide Friday whether to uphold a contempt of court charge levied against Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins for defying an order to testify at a hearing where the DA was accused of prosecutorial misconduct.

The months since State District Judge Lena Levario held Watkins in contempt March 7 for refusing to answer questions about indictments sought again a Texas oil family heir have involved legal wrangling that sought to delay Friday’s decision or avert it altogether. Watkins has maintained that a prosecutor’s decisions while pursuing a case should not be questioned in court.

Baring any surprise moves by attorneys involved in the case, State District Judge Bob Brotherton should decide Friday whether the contempt charge and the $500 fine it comes with will stand. He could also dismiss the charge.

Officers of the court like Watkins are given a hearing before another judge when held in contempt as a check on judicial power. Watkins, like Levario, is a Democrat in Dallas County. Brotherton is a Republican from Wichita Falls.

J.C. Penney adopts a “poison pill”

J.C. Penney Co. is trying to buy some time to right itself without having to also fight a battle for control of the 111-year-old department store chain.

J.C. Penney’s board has adopted a shareholder rights plan designed to prevent investors from gaining control of the company.

The rights plan, also known as a poison pill, is for one year and was adopted after it consulting with outside advisers.

The move comes a week after hedge fund manager and Penney’s largest shareholder Bill Ackman resigned from Penney’s board. Tuesday he told his hedge fund investors that he may sell his 17.7 percent stake, but wasn’t sure when. Ackman and Penney also agreed to a plan for his exit last week.

Jury handed Fort Hood shooting rampage case

FORT HOOD, Texas — The Army psychiatrist on trial for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood passed on his final chance to address jurors before they started deliberating Thursday, even after prosecutors insisted they hand down a verdict that would allow the death penalty.

Maj. Nidal Hasan is acting as his own attorney but declined to plead his case after prosecutors finished their closing argument. When the judge told Hasan he could begin, he said: "The defense chooses not to make a closing statement."

Army psychiatrist is facing numerous counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder for the attack, which killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others at the Army post in central Texas on Nov. 5, 2009.

It was the deadliest mass shooting ever on a U.S. military base.

What was Dewhurst thinking?

So far, and it’s still kind of early, the best line about Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s ham-handed, failed attempt to spring his nephew’s wife from jail came from an unexpected source — your Texas Department of Agriculture.

“Dew’s call to Allen PD sounds like Anchorman Ron Burgundy: ‘I don’t know how to put this, but I’m kind of a big deal. People know me,’” tweeted Texas Ag Commissioner Todd Staples, who’s running against Dewhurst in next year’s GOP primary.

So is Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, who, predictably, tweeted with exclamation-pointed righteous indignation: “Dewhurst’s blatant abuse of power to get a family member out of jail is disturbing!”

In trying to sort out what Dewhurst did, one must ask the two questions one must always ask oneself when one has done something dumb (especially if one knows it’s being recorded by someone covered by a law requiring them to release the recording): What was he thinking? And, was he thinking?
